Barron Falls after Cyclone Imogen - January 2021 (Kuranda Cairns North Queensland Australia)

The excellent walkways and lookouts at Skyrails's Barron Falls (or 'Din Din' in the local aboriginal dialect), near Cairns in Tropical North Queensland, afford travellers fabulous views of the Barron River as it cascades down a total vertical drop of 125 metres (410 feet) to the valley floor below. Unfortunately, more often than not Din Din is merely a token trickle, the vast majority of the water being redirected to the nearby Barron Gorge Hydro Electric Power Station by a weir located upriver of the falls. However, our visit was less than two days after the passing of Tropical Cyclone Imogen! Imogen had made landfall as Category 1 system just north of Karumba on the west coast of the Cape York peninsular, before tracking eastwards towards Cairns. Despite being downgraded to a tropical low, Imogen delivered huge amounts of rainfall and damaging winds to the whole of North Queensland. The upshot of this was that Barron Falls became a breathtaking spectacle, quite literally! The roar was incredible as unbelievable quantities of water plummeted violently down the cliff face. Thanks to the extreme heat and humidity, the falls created a sort of localised weather system as the cascading water evaporated, forming low-level clouds that rose hypnotically from the valley below. Leider ist Din Din meistens nur ein Rinnsal, da der Großteil des Wassers durch ein Wehr flussaufwärts der Wasserfälle zum nahe gelegenen Barron Gorge Hydro Electric Power Station umgeleitet wird. Unser Besuch fand jedoch weniger als zwei Tage nach dem Durchgang des tropischen Wirbelsturms Imogen statt! Imogen war als System der Kategorie 1 nördlich von Karumba an der Westküste der Halbinsel Cape York gelandet, bevor es nach Osten in Richtung Cairns flog. Obwohl Imogen auf ein tropisches Tief herabgestuft wurde, lieferte es riesige Mengen an Regen und schädlichen Winden in ganz Nord-Queensland. Das Ergebnis davon war, dass die Barron Falls im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes zu einem atemberaubenden Spektakel wurden! Das Dröhnen war unglaublich, als unglaubliche Wassermengen die Klippen hinunterstürzten. It was indeed a fabulous experience MW. Sadly though, the remnants of Imogen were still passing through in the form of heavy rain and thunder storms. Lightening caused the whole system to be shut down in the early afternoon, meaning that we had to return down the range in a minibus rather than on the cable car as planned!
