Thanks for mentioning my channel Mikko! Beautiful lesson. Also, so glad you mentioned Labyrinth of Limitations. He's my favorite guitar player right now. He deserves a listen to for sure.

Fine work here. Just wanted to add 2 cents of history of these progressions. I've Got Rhythm by Gershwin was released in 1930, but Fats Whaller's Aint Misbehavin' and Handful of Keys were both released in 1929, with the A section of Aint Misbehavin' matching the A section of I've Got Rhythm and the B section of Handful of Keys matching the B section. Further, Whaller learned pretty much everything from James P. Johnson, who wrote The Charleston and Carolina Shout (which Duke Ellington said was, "The most solid foundation). Carolina shout was 1921 and The Charleston was 1924. One key element of the progression goes back to Scott Joplin's Rags, most famous being Maple Leaf Rag from 1899, with almost all of them containing that classic turn-around. Another key element can be traced back at least to Chopin in the 1830s. Check out his Nocturne, Op. 9 No. 3, which essentially starts with the classic blues ending progression. And has anyone else considered that Beethoven's Ode to Joy contains many variations and inspirations for the blues turn around? Ok, that was more like 4 cents of history. Have a nice day!

This may be a little out of context but a tonic [Bb) dim is closely related to an A7. Using the “family of dominants”, A7 equates to C7. Therefore, when applying the tonic dim concept, one could think of it as a secondary dominant. Basically V ing the V7 chord. What do you think?
@LokeyeMC
@LokeyeMC 9 ай бұрын
That matches my understanding, that the biii diminished is thought of as V ing the V7 chord.

I think of rhythm changes as a mode/raga/melody (over a tonic drone)... The tonic diminished adds the b3 and b5 which are 'blue notes'. Rhythm changes is like the blues or Raga in that . Harmonically static (doesn't modulate to different keys).

Super useful stuff Mikko, thanks! It really helps me make sense of Barry Harrises fundamental ideas. Using the diminshed scale to get that blues feeling... damn!

Thank you Mikko for your contributions on youtube. I'm trying to figure out how you are getting that sound. Are you using a Electro-Harmonix Pog pedal? Hopefully, you'll see this post. Inquiring mind would love to know. And, a brilliant study on rhythm changes.

@@sin77777 Especially since Roni Ben-Hur was Barry Harris's goto guitarist for a WHILE--worth exploring the book. Roni was also Chris Park's first jazz guitar teacher, before getting introduced to Barry Harris. Roni's a damn good teacher who's helped me make sense of the Barry Harris pedagogy, worth checking out anything he's published.
