I've admired Barry Harris' thinking "from afar" by watching the KZbin workshop videos where he is at the piano with students. Now, with this book and your help, guitarists like myself can fully put these ideas to use in a very practical way. I'd like to see some more "weird" examples from the Slonimsky Thesaurus of scales...that's what got me into you in the first place. You are such a good theoretical thinker (and an excellent guitar player as well, of course!)

Hello and thank you for this course which clarifies a lot this method that I am studying. At 04:48: 1) Db7 is the tritone substitution of G7 2) G7 is the V7 of C6 3) Bb7 is the tritone substitution of E7 which is the V7 of A-7 composed of the same notes as C6 4) E7 is the tritone substitution of Bb7 which is the backdoor resolving chord to C6.
@Mikkokosmos
@Mikkokosmos 3 ай бұрын
I'm not a big fan of the concept of "backdoor dominant". To me (and many others) the bVII7 chords sounds more like a subdominant. It belongs kind of to the IV minor. It doesn't have the tritone resolution that makes up a dominant in a cadence. So the sub5 of the backdoor dominant makes no sense to me. It doesn't feel like a dominant at all to my ears. This is just my opinion.

The Barry Harris method IS PRACTICAL! But you have to practice it. People are looking for a quick fix to playing or sounding jazzy or improvising. There is no such quick fix. It frustrates me to keep seeing comments all over KZbin that imply Barry is talking about something that can’t be done. YOU WON’ T GET IT IT UNLESS YOU PRACTICE THE SCALES LIKE BARRY SAYS PRACTICE THE SCALES! Bird did this stuff. Dizzy did this stuff. Bud Powell did this stuff. THEREFORE IT IS VERY PRACTICAL! It isn’t practical if you’re approaching it from CHORD ISOLATION. It”s all about movement from closely related SCALES THAT HAVE THEIR FOUNDATION IN THE THREE DIMINISHED CHORDS! For example, C-Ef-Gf- A diminished chord is not just a chord but a pathway to MOVEMENT. Cmajor move to Aminor is often thought of as 1 to 6. A min IS the 6 of C maj. AND Cmin is the 6 of Ef maj. Ef min is the 6 of Gf maj. Gf min is the 6 of A maj. BUT IT’’S BECAUSE OF THE MINOR THIRD RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THESE NOTES IN THE C DIMINISHED CHORD. You discover profound relationships between scales like this WHEN YOU PRACTICE YOUR SCALES LIKE BARRY SAYS PRACTICE YOUR SCALES.
@jimransone
@jimransone 2 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your comment. I'm sure there is a payoff for anyone with that kind of discipline. Also, I don't doubt that many jazz greats practiced scales in this fashion. But I'm pretty sure there are also plenty of great jazz players who did not. Monk's playing does not sound to my ear like someone who spent countless hours practicing scales. Nor does Lester Young, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Charlie Christian, etc. Many musicians just learn stuff from records and find a way to incorporate it with stuff they already know until they internalize it. Rinse and repeat. I'm coming from a blues tradition, and it's all about copping riffs from records. For me personally, "practice something you don't understand endlessly until at some point it starts to make sense" won't work for me. I know I will get bored and quit before I get to the payoff. I am trying to find small bits of this that I can incorporate right now into tunes I'm already working on, and then once I internalize it, move onto to another small piece of the puzzle.
@jimransone
@jimransone 2 жыл бұрын
But take this with a grain of salt. I am not a jazz player. Just recently getting serious about learning how to play some Charlie Christian stuff and how to play over swing stuff from that era. But it is my understanding that the Barry Harris stuff provides a good theoretical way to look at that material.
@cedricary9633
@cedricary9633 2 жыл бұрын
@@jimransone Barry only codified a practical methodology based on what he heard Bud, Dizz, Monk, et al play. His genealogy of scales can be applied to ALL music rooted in western tradition - BUT IS SOLIDLY ROOTED IN THE BLUES. If you ignore anything else he teaches and just practice his ideas on the family of four dominants you CAN GET RID OF the so called “BLUES SCALE.” You won’ t need it. When you do what Barry says and combine ANY dominant chord with a diminished chord to form his “hybrid” dominant scale, you’ll be able to come up with your own blues riffs EASILY. And you’ll end up with way more material for blues improvisation. But if you’re happy mimicking riffs, do what makes you happy.
@jimransone
@jimransone 2 жыл бұрын
@@cedricary9633 Hmm... So far, I have barely gotten familiar with the major 6th diminished scale. Not really comprehending the dominant diminished scale yet. But to clarify, I didn't mean that learning other people's riffs was an end point. It's just a starting point. You have to internalize them and come up with your own variations. It works for me. You learn enough riffs, and your ears and fingers go way beyond "the blues scale" whether you know any of the theory or not. I can use every chromatic note plus micro tones over a 12 bar blues. But I am trying to learn swing music now, and I have a sense that this Barry Harris stuff might help me figure out what's going on in Duke Ellington arrangements, Freddie Green comping, etc. I could probably get there just by transcribing the records by ear, which is itself a very time consuming effort, but I suspect that learning these Barry Harris ideas might help. Here's an example: I transcribed a Teddy Bunn 12 bar solo and discovered that he was using an Eb minor 6th arpeggio over bars 9 and 10 of a Bb blues. I recognized that arpeggio because I had learned it from Django Reinhardt's "Minor Blues." So I started trying to incorporate that idea into my blues solos. It just recently occurred to me that the Eb minor 6th arpeggio is one note away from what would be the diminished half of the major 6th diminished scale, so basically the F7b9, so it totally makes sense over bars 9 and 10. Years earlier I had learned that F7b9 chord from hearing Oscar Moore play it on a Nat King Cole record. Didn't have any clue about the theory, but it didn't stop me from using it on gigs. Anyway, thanks for your response. Maybe the dominant diminished scale will make more sense to me now.

But I never understand how to “justify” the C°? Is this a "hidden" V7 ? it might be stupid of me...:) Could you explain to me? perhaps it is only the movements of the voices that this C° can be explained? @@brunolaire7826 Thanks for digging my videos. I'm struggling to understand the question. But no, here it's not functioning as a dominant but rather a passing quality. Diminished chords can have three different functions: as a dominant (most often), as a passing chord or just as a colour it could even be a tonic. Here it is more of a passing thing. Smooth voice leading. Hence calling it "harmonic movement" not sure if that helps
