Are no words to justify his brilliance & unique genius. What an absolute treasure we enjoyed. Will miss forever.

I grew up on Dame Edna and Les Patterson, but somehow I'd never heard of Sandy Stone until today. I was already crying after hearing the news, this made me worse. Just beautiful. Not sure why this is hitting me so hard, I suppose some people have always just been there my whole life, and you don't realise how much they impacted you until they're gone. RIP Barry.

He's an absolute genius. And not just comedically speaking. But as a whole. Nobody else will ever come close to what he has achieved with all his characters.

I've been to every gig Mr Humphries has preformed in Australia, since I was 19 years old. This is my all time favorite one. Especially when he dies, an ends up his chair in the local op shop. Then weirdly a young Italian couple buy it, & he ends up back in his old house..

I saw this show live. Barry is a very funny and witty man. As Billy Conolly once said "political correctness is the language of cowardness"

I think Billy was probably intelligent enough to say, "the language of cowardice".

Germaine misses the-point. Sandy describes a deep inner feeling we all share about ageing and death. Its an extremely poignant monologue.

Before Barry or Germaine there were George Johnson and Charmian Clift who fled Australia for London and the Greek islands and whose greatest novels were about Australia as in My Brother Jack. You can take them out of Australia but you cannot dislodge the Australian within.

Of course, "bleak" is Greer's (very) subjective opinion. For a middle class person (dreaming of life in London, or Paris, or New York) Melbourne in the late '50s and early '60s probably did seem very dull. I think, most working class people would have felt differently.

Exactly but I'm sure there were people who loved Melbourne or other parts of Australia. I lot of brits came over here very willingly and because of the good weather and job prosperities that were tougher at the time in the home country.

Weird that James believes Stone is the creation and Everage and Patterson are the aspects of himself. I don't know Humphreys at all but on the face of it it would seem the opposite

Speak for yourself. Germaine Greer is a great Australian who is loved by many. She, like Barry Humphries and countless others Australian intellectuals, had to leave Australia in the 1960s in order to be taken seriously and to find success. Nothing much has changed, Australians still hate intellectuals and anything cultural.
