As Sir Les would say : "Are you with me ?" 🤣🙄

I’m a proud lefty, feminist 74 year old who grew up in Tasmania (that bushy island state) and also grew up with the incomparable Barry Humphries. I adored him and all his alters, including the hilariously revolting Sir Les, our greatest ever representative at the Court of St James. I am so grateful for the treasure trove of videos such as this to be found online. We need Barry and his capacity to make us laugh to the point of tears more than ever in these ghastly times. @@peterclarke3990 In the 1980's, and arrested on a charge of gross indecency with another male (a charge no longer on the statute books) because I argued with a Met Police officer, a series of police officers subsequently shouted through the 'wicket' of the cell door, f***ing shirtlifter, whenever they passed by. I saw Barry at the Palace Theatre in Manchester in 1982 - "An Intimate Evening With Barry Humphries" it was billed. He did four hours straight without a break and revealed many other characters besides Edna and Sir Les that I'd never seen before - these must be reserved strictly for his live stage performances. The show was brilliantly original and absolutely hilarious - never flagged for a minute. There is no doubt in my mind that this is the greatest comedy genius of all time.

Ever hear of Benny Hill? He did all of this same thing generally, and much more, and was born ten years earlier than Humphries. I watch this, and his Edna potrayal, which are quite good, but I know I've seen this before, and my mind goes right back to Benny Hill. Them being literally a world apart may explain some of the imitation aspects, but it leads one to think, who came first, the Benny or the Barry? I side with Benny, primarily because he was older. I first saw Hill, and all of his wonderful hilarity, in the late seventies on American PBS. I just caught wind of Humphries today, on KZbin. Perhaps, if I had seen Humphries 45 years ago, and Hill just now, my view would be different. Just saying...

Funny Allan, but I just went on about how it seems Benny Hill did all of this type of thing, with another KZbin commenter who "dare I say that Humphries is the greatest comedian of all time.", to which I suggested Hill. Being from the UK, care to comment on Benny versus Barry? Who do you believe was doing this stuff first? I guess maybe it really doesn't matter, both are very funny men. Perhaps they developed their comedy concurrently, as they were literally a world apart. And I imagine the Aussies will vote Humphries and The Brits will vote Hill. And we Americans are caught somewhere in between... hahaha. My vote goes with Hill, probably because I saw him probably 45 or so years ago, whereas I just caught the Edna/Patterson skits today. CHEERS!!

Quite apart from the Cultural Attaché’s insightful thoughts and wisdom, I just love the fact that Parky is laughing throughout the entire interview whilst desperately trying to keep a straight face.

I saw Dame Edna back in the 80's at a theatre in the Strand, and everyone was in hysterics with gut wrenching stomach pains from laughing, all of Barry's characters are hilarious. Parky loved interviewing him.

Great to have had a Father called Les Patterson. Enid my Mother, was paranoid about any reference to him being called "Sir Les' He thrived on it.He was a great father and when he had his 80th birthday, Barry H sent him an email birthday wish from Sir Les. What a hoot that was. The character of Sir Les is part of the family history.....As an annex of course.

There was far more to Barry's character Les than just dirty jokes, that's why it's not around today because there's no one intelligent enough doing it, they're just copying the dirty stuff and not getting the entire act. The guest on this show Claire Raynor was the first to be offended back in those days and she was cracking up laughing at the end.

Barry in the 50s recorded a 20 minute monologue where all he did was list household brands, of toothpaste, tomato sauce, detergents, lollies, and on and on. It was inspired comedy but also a classic record of the times.

I've watched this so many times. It has to be one of the funniest and most original starts to an interview ever. He's virtually retired these days. I hope there is someone out there who can replace Barry at some stage. We so dearly need people like him more than ever.
