This is one of the most emotional scenes in the movie. In fact one of the most emotional scenes I have ever seen in any film. It is the perfect way to shoot tragedy, including the masterful in which the music was used in this scene. I always tend to cry during this scene and that is a great achievement for any director and actor to achieve, to allow the viewers to feel the emotions of the movie.

I know that some in the movie world feel that Ryan O'Neal is a lite weight actor, but I think he aquitted himself very well in Barry Lyndon. This particular scene shows his acting prowess very well!

What I just realized was that Barry beginning to sob uncontrollably during the “Fort” story was because his son died out of our view, just makes it sadder honestly.

I think it was a more stylistic choice to have the actors be dry in actual emotion, but heavily display the emotion physically; it's kind of like a painting. This scene is not sad but funny. It's dark humor. The irony of Barry crying after telling his son he'll be alright followed by a jump cut to the coffin playing with the extreme music of Sarabande is absolutely hilarious. This is one of the best scenes Kubrick did in his whole career, XD 2024 edit: shame on my 15-year-old self for this half-assed analysis, this scene heart wrenching.

While there are some funny scenes in this movie (as there are in every Kubrick movie), I doubt this scene was intended to be funny. The use of Sarabande strikes me as an attempt to set an apocalyptic tone for the second half of the movie, as Barry's whole world comes crashing down around him. Michael Hordern's narration sounds pretty grave during these scenes as well. Kubrick himself told Michel Ciment, "I don't think that Barry Lyndon should have been done as a comedy." The book by Thackeray had a more comical tone. Kubrick's film is more serious by comparison.

Interesting opinion. I think everything Kubrick did was done with a sense of irony, so it could be considered to be "funny". I often imagine him chuckling and smiling throught the premeres of his finished movies.

@@matejko1086 I’m happy to let you know I saw Barry Lyndon in theaters a few nights ago and I was sobbing my eyes out during this scene. I understand what I meant by my comment since Kubrick was famous for his use of irony, but yes, ultimately this is a devastating part of the movie. I was immature when I made this comment and can now appreciate sincere emotional storytelling without being overly intellectual as I was in my teenage years. And also my original analysis of this scene makes almost no sense lmfao

i don't read this scene that way at all and i don't think any decent person could. maybe there's something to be said for the courtly formality of the era being incongruous with our present customs, but to see anyone, from any time and of any culture, comfort their dying child knowing full well that child's fate is horribly and devastatingly tragic to witness.

Kubrick was simply a pure genius in a such way that all other movie producers could not bear him at all! They laughed at him when he produced this film with the famous "candles". they stopped to laugh when seeing the success of this masterpiece.

Blasphemy! Thou art to be hanged at dawn! (But: Marisa's responses were too strong and I would have backed her off in this scene. I'd want the pain restricted to her eyes and no further. Kubrick was too indulgent of her here in my opinion and gave her too many cutaways.) Wait, what the hell am I saying? This is KUBRICK!
