This represents a tonal shift in the film. Pre Intermission, Barry is written as a sympathetic protagonist. After the intermission, he is written and presented as the villain.

Poppycock! Your analysis is far too simplistic. He shows a lot of humanity when Byan dies, as well as honor in the final duel by shooting at the ground!

Yeah, really; it was right at that point that I first started to really dislike the character. (After all, how could anyone treat pretty Marisa Berenson so appallingly?) He should've been grateful for what he was lucky enough to get & been more careful to hold onto it.

This is an interesting moment because for me it’s both off putting and satisfying. Barry has finally made it, he’s victorious. He’s become wealthy from very little and is truly in control. But he’s also clearly become a dick at this point.

Giving Ryan O'Neal's own life, there couldn't be a better actor to play Barry Lyndon.
@user-mg1hp4fu4u2 жыл бұрын
There is an opinion, it was not a Kubrick's choice but the Warners' studio precondition to choose from box-office top five actors at that time and Ryan would never make it on Stanley's if it was his will. I personally think Ryan did hell of a good job and his looks draw huge amount of viewers' empathy.

@@user-mg1hp4fu4u correct Kubrick would not have chosen him but it was a happy accident because he unintentionally came off as a moron and that was perfect for the story. It was a criticism of a society that rewards precisely the wrong qualities in human beings. Not much has changed. In fact it might be worse now.

Just compare this scene with the social media reality we live in nowadays: partner is nothing more than a beautiful object on a photo, another thing next to ferrari, expensive holidays in Maldives etc forming pleasant background of someone's life.

@@snippsnapp123 The idea is that women constantly test a man for signs of wimpyness. For evolutionary reasons, women prefer strong men, the famous "bad boys" that are featured in EVERY SINGLE ROMANCE novel enjoyed by women (like 50 Shades of Grey and Twilight, both also written by women). She was nagging him and attempting to censor his behavior, he responded with a "nah" but it wasn´t tense, it wasn´t defensive, but relaxed. From my experience with women, from my understanding of women, I can tell you that´s the sort of thing that gets them going.
