This is an interesting moment because for me it’s both off putting and satisfying. Barry has finally made it, he’s victorious. He’s become wealthy from very little and is truly in control. But he’s also clearly become a dick at this point.

There is an opinion, it was not a Kubrick's choice but the Warners' studio precondition to choose from box-office top five actors at that time and Ryan would never make it on Stanley's if it was his will. I personally think Ryan did hell of a good job and his looks draw huge amount of viewers' empathy.

It was a criticism of a society that rewards precisely the wrong qualities in human beings. Not much has changed. In fact it might be worse now.
