that's because of the Zeiss lens kubrick used. the fastest lens ever used in a movie. that's what made it possible to film that scene lit only by candle light and because of the f0.7 of the lens everything looks flat and like a painting. the zeiss lens was build by Zeiss for the nasa apollo mission to film the dark side of the moon, I think it was an improvement on a german night fighting lens from the second world war. they are still the fastest lenses ever build by humans and only ca.4 are still in existence.

Truth be told: Once I looked at a woman super intensely like in this scene, and found out later that her friend noticed and told her she had never seen a man look at a woman that way (in a good way). Well, I didn't wind up losing a leg like Redmond but let's just say our fates were not terribly dissimilar. The moral still holds: watch what you wish for, you just might get it.

Oui, absolument. Un régal pour les yeux, les oreilles et l'intelligence ! J'ai un faible pour le rôle du "chevalier" tellement représentatif de ce que pouvait être un espion au XVII ème ou XVIII ème siècle à la manière d'un Talleyrand. Je ne me lasse jamais de voir ce film où à chaque fois je découvre quelque chose, ou un nouveau "détail". C'est le propre des grandes œuvres, comme une pièce de musique dans laquelle une petite partie de haubois "cachée" soudain prend son importance. Merveilleux!
