The coach scene is brilliant. Barry, completely self-absorbed smokes profusely, already showing quite blatantly that his only goal is to satisfy his own wants and needs - meanwhile his wife gives clear signs of disapproval yet endures him. She does not like the smoke, wafting it away multiple times, looking at Barry, hoping he'll catch on and put his pipe away. When she can't take it any more and asks him to stop smoking he shows his true self: He tries to hide it with a playful demeanour but it's such a hurtful disregard of her as a person, it's not enough that he continues to smoke - oh, no. He blows the smoke directly into her face. That's disdain.

it's clearly a deliberate choice by Kubrick to have him do so. It is intended to convey to the viewer that not only is lady Lyndon's chaplain so religiously devout as to have memorized the entire bible word for word, but that he has also memorized on which specific word each actual page ends and when to proceed to the next without needing to look at it at all. This is Kubrick's brilliant and obsessive attention to detail on full display. EDIT: I just learned that he is not even reading from the bible at all! He's reading from the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, making his devoutness even MORE extreme, lol.

It is a very nice touch that adds a lot, but it isn't a Bible - it's the 1662 Book of Common Prayer which contains the words of the service he is reciting. Not looking while turning the page shows that not only does he know the words but he knows where the page breaks are as well.

Gordon Head Indeed. The boy sees entirely through Barry. It's such a perfect scene alone in the coach with perhaps the only man he can trust. And yet, due to both characters' status, discourse or even further discussion is impossible. So, in a few sentences, and a seemingly blank facial expression, all is revealed. And you're absolutely right about Mr. Melvin. He was a splendid actor who could speak volumes with what appeared to be almost no human emotion. It's a pity that actors such as he, in particular he, so rarely got the film roles which would have lifted his name to the top of the list of projects that would have allowed us to see the fullness of his range. The loss is ours, I do believe.

Totally agree. He does not disagree with anything Bullingdon says. He, and I guess everybody else except for Lady Lyndon, can clearly see what is going on. When he gives the speech about not entering marriage for carnal and other bad reasons etc, I think he is looking at Barry Lyndon, and when talking about the positives for entering marriage he is looking at Lady Lyndon.

Right, and how about the inspiration for The Duelists from the starting scene ? Or about Schubert's Piano trio used in his brother's (masterpiece) The Hunger ? .. and many more. It seems that mr. Kubrick not only accepted the plagiarism, but let mr. R. Scott use parts of The Shinning aerial shots.

Should be noted - Lady Lyndon is always referred to as the “Countess of Lyndon” but her late husband was always referred to as “Sir Charles Lyndon” and not the “Earl of Lyndon” as he should have been if she was indeed a Countess, especially given that their son was given the subsidiary title of the “Viscount of Bullingdon” at birth. Was this simply an oversight by Kubrick?
@christophersanton5 жыл бұрын
No - Lady Lyndon was a Countess in her own right, i.e. she married beneath herself each time first to a baronet and secondly to a plain esquire so she retained her title each time.
@LordHRthend5 жыл бұрын
Christopher Anton Thank you for clearing that up for me! I was always curious why this was the case. I know Countesses can exist in their own right but wasn’t sure if this was the case as they are rare. Do you know why her son was able to inherit the subsidiary title of Viscount Bullingdon from her? Also, would he become the Earl of Lyndon upon the death of his mother? So many questions I’m sure are answered by the book!
@christophersanton5 жыл бұрын
@@LordHRthend yes she would have held the title exactly as a man so therefore confer any courtesy title to her children - it would also have been the Hon Barry Lyndon, for example - and also the Earldom in the fullness of time.

@jolicska Жыл бұрын
He could have offered lot more than Charles Lyndon. Masculinity and bravery that he demonstrates through the whole movie. I see you people have missed the point that Barry was climbing up from scratch by his own efforts and for him to get such levels of society could only be possible through marriage. Barry made a mistake once he got there by instead of educating himself was given into mere pleasures. He got rough and hardened by the way he had lived. Do you think the nobles were such saints back then? In the final duel Barry has shown mercy as he knew he had done to Bullingdon the same was done to him in his youth . But Bullingdon had no mercy even after his life was spared.
