It's funny. I just watched this movie after not having seen it since my teens. A few observations. Then I thought Redmond to be a villain that got what he deserved. Now, I think he's practical and sort of honorable. This movie is the closet thing to a moving fine art painting you will ever see, which I believed then and still do. I thought this music played almost incessantly and unrelentingly during the whole movie and now I find it only plays when Barry Lyndon 'comes to Court' and starts living clearly above his station. I don't know why but it's sort of soul crushing in the film's context. It's a testament to the power of the music and the genius of Kubrick that it left such an impression.

I agree with everything you have written and I love Kubrick but damn it, why did he put Ryan effing O'Neal in this? He ruins it!

Name my favorite movie? Barry Lyndon...the only reason I can give is that it is Perfect. I listen to the soundtrack over and over. Helps me walk more slowly...

My favourite from the film. How he edits the scene where he meets Lady Lyndon is amazing, the music literally fits perfectly to every litt movement the characters make. He had a great understanding of music.

The music fits in perfectly to the scenes even though it was not composed during that period.

It plays on the bluray menu too. It is one of the finest films ever made and is one of the most beautiful blu-ray movies out there.

This melody has been haunting me for some time as it has been used in at least 3 films - first in Phantom of the Opera [silent film], Barry Lyndon and Hunger with Bowie and C. Deneuve. Amazing classical music. Yeah it fit Barry Lyndon the best - so aristocratic.

Apart from the music which, of course, is great, I liked the stills a lot. Well chosen, and here you can really see, what Kubrick had in mind, turning each shot into a portrait of the 18th century (I particularly liked the first one). Thanks for that!

This is not the version from "The Mechanic." That version was composed and performed by the company composer. It reverses the roles of the piano and cello, and loses one meter at each end of the track.

is it me or is this recording one half step lower than the version used in the last scene of BL? Playing guitar along to both and they are blatantly a half step apart (film: C#m, this recording: Cm). Music geek out.

@Levengeursecache tu oublies que la musique de Schubert appartient au XIX siecle, pas au XVIII... un erreur... Kubrick faisait pas des erreurs comme ca, il y a une raison pour la musique de Schubert dans le moment du film ou ella apparait.

Nowadays it needs movies as Trojan Horse in order to make people familiar with the cultural heritage. Although - It should be mentioned and acknowledged that you don't listen the genius of Barry Lyndon but Franz Schubert.

Kubrick shot this entire film using natural lighting; no modern aids at all. He'd wait for days for the light, sky, mist, whatever, to be just right before he would shoot a scene. A tediously boring story (to me), which I would watch again just for the beauty of the cinematography.
