@@Fuliginosus An in-universe explanation (outside of just wanting to use more English in the film for the viewer's sake) might be that, since the Chevalier was a native English speaker, the Prince wanted to use English with him. I would have expected them to speak French together, if it were sticking to the culture of the time. Frederick's court all spoke primarily French. The Chevalier certainly seemed to have an affinity for French and "Frenchness".

Makes me So Badly Wish that Stanley Kubrick (unlike James Cameron) made and directed the movie "Titanic!" Unlike with James Cameron, the movie of the ship and its sinking (as well as its actual passengers) would have been 100% authentic! There would be No Kate Winslet and Leonardo Decaprio to Upset, and thus compromise his (Stanley Kubric's) making of another authentic, historical masterpiece! How So many of the crew (including Captain Smith) and some of their wealthy passengers would talk about and praise sailing on the "Olympic" (sister ship of "Titanic") that was actually completed and was sailing one year before "Titanic" was even finished! How "Titanic" was only considered to be a mere sister ship (until her infamous sinking) to the "Olympic"- Flag ship to the three "Unsinkable Liners (including Britannic-that was currently being built, and would be finished later)! I Will Never Forgive James Cameron for not Stepping Out of the Way of a True, Uncompromising Perfectionist (Stanley Kubrick)!
