This movie is absolutely fantastic. And this song gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it. Most people I know say this is a "boring" or "overestimated" movie. I pity them, because there is just a handful of movies around able to stir your soul like Barry Lyndon does.

I've heard this movie was "boring" and as a Kubrick enthusiast I can't believe it took me so long to watch it. I was hypnotized and wanted to start it over again when it was done. Definitely top 2 favorite Kubrick films.

A very underrated Kubrik film. I found it, even though there was little action, a very beautiful film and it brought the era back to life.

Yes, Kubrik was a great story teller. A man's life was captured beautifully and sadly by this great director.

Not only the most underrated Kubrick film but without a doubt the very beat period piece ever made. Brilliant beyond words. Every scene is a sumptuous feast for the ears and the eyes.

+Robert Paige without a doubt? Maybe in your opinion it is but to just make a blanket statement like that is non sense. There are other terrific period pieces that top this film. Ever see Potop (The Deluge) How about Roman Polanski's Chinatown set in 1937 Los Angeles. There's no such thing as "the best".

This was so appropriate to so many scenes of defeat or tragedy. When it plays under little Brian's funeral, it's a punch in the gut.

The staging, the framing, the colors and the lighting effects mean that each scene in this film could have been a painting. The story is beautiful and on top of that, as if that wasn't enough, Kubrick gives us a crazy soundtrack!!!!

You are a hundred percent correct it was beautifully done

Wow! What a beautiful soundtrack. "Barry Lyndon" is a superb film in my opinion! Instead of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" winning Best Picture, for 1975 at the Oscars, I think Barry Lyndon should have won that award. "Barry Lyndon", "Spartacus", and "Paths of Glory", are my three favorite Stanley Kubrick movies!

Fabulous film, proved ever so with each person who dislikes it 'cause they're addicted to the car chase tempo of commercial movie making. This is cinema, not a movie. Kubrick's choice of music certifies his genius.

This is based on La Folia which seems to have been around in one shape or another before it gained wider currency and an established form by Lully, the Italian born French composer (1632-1687). Vivaldi’s opus 1 number 12 is an astonishing ten minutes full of variety of treatments of the simple chord sequence. Of course the very Englishness attributed to this is dubious, as it was written by the German born Händel, a musical magpie if ever there were one, cannibalising his own works and stealing from others, there was no concept of copyright in those days. This dates from about 1703 to 1706 when Handel was still in Hamburg. As Stravinsky wrote, or at least allowed his name to be associated with in Chroniques de ma vie, “… music is, by its very nature, essentially powerless to express anything at all, whether a feeling, an attitude of mind, a psychological mood, a phenomenon of nature, etc. Expression has never been an inherent property of music. That is by no means the purpose of its existence. If, as is nearly always the case, music appears to express something, this is only an illusion and not a reality. It is simply an additional attribute which, by tacit and inveterate agreement, we have lent it, thrust upon it, as a label, a convention - in short, an aspect which, unconsciously or by force of habit, we have come to confuse with its essential being.“ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folia#Historical_significance

from Wikipedia: The film's period setting allowed Kubrick to indulge his penchant for classical music, and the film score uses pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach (an arrangement of the Concerto for violin and oboe in C minor), Antonio Vivaldi (Cello Concerto in E-Minor, a transcription of the Cello Sonata in E Minor RV 40), Giovanni Paisiello, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Franz Schubert (German Dance No. 1 in C major, Piano Trio in E-Flat, Opus 100 and Impromptu No. 1 in C minor), as well as the Hohenfriedberger March.[note 1] The piece most associated with the film, however, is the main title music: George Frideric Handel's stately Sarabande from the Suite in D minor HWV 437. Originally for solo harpsichord, the versions for the main and end titles are performed very romantically with orchestral strings, harpsichord, and timpani. It is used at various points in the film, in various arrangements, to indicate the implacable working of impersonal fate.[citation needed] The score also includes Irish folk music, including Seán Ó Riada's song Women of Ireland, arranged by Paddy Moloney and performed by The Chieftains.

turn1210 ..well,the movie is actually not at the level, the music is. But it's the only really movie, which is somewhere valuable about the 18th. century, because there are not many movies about this specific era, even despite the fact, that the 18th century is defiantely the most graviating one,for europe's modern being and history..

It was a great movie, and the musical arrangement is moving. Handle's Sarabande is grand, as Schubert's piano trio in E flat is dark and beautiful. The movie was great & the arrangements beautiful. Always thought it odd that this came form the same person who gave us "A Clock Work Orange".
