I think because the director wanted a goofy comedy, then Barry underplays the joke and now it gives the director a different perspective and wants to make it a dry comedy.

This is back in the 80s...... So, it's raining really hard and we are standing in the service bay of my best bud's VW Dealership. It's raining harder than you imagined. This short short red haired man about 20 years old comes up. Wearing a trash bag for a raincoat. the dealership is up a huge hill and on the edge of town, and in the direction he came up from THAT is the city jail. It's 10 am, so he just got let out of jail, the judge gets there at 9 am. ..... Sooo, here he comes, we say hello and he asks if "we" are hiring. Rusty says yes and gets a job application. I told Rusty the guy just got out of jail, Rusty says "Yea, and his first thought is to go get a job? I want this guy." The Job App is one of the 4 page ones thats a massive piece of paper that is then folded twice and it's regular paper size, 4 pages. The print is just First page and the References are on 2nd page as you turn it over. THEN there is a line and it says COMMENTS and a vast quantity of empty space. For interviewer comments. The guy fills the first page out, has no place to live, no phone, no references. He only has a name and his High School listed. Under COMMENTS He starts writing his life story. It s just like you think it is ...... THEN suddenly in the middle of the third page his handwriting changes into this DARK and twisted reverse slope devil thing... I AM THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB OF JESUS AND MY ENIMIES WILL PAY type stuff. It was hilarious. Dark but hilarious. Rusty hired him on the spot. He never missed a day for 6 years and he only quit to go take care of his grandma out of state. He worked his way up from Porter and Wash Bay to Assistant Service Manager.

I think they initially wanted to make a goofy comedy, but because of his performance they probably now are gonna make it more of a dry humor comedy like little miss sunshine, or Superbad. I mean for god sake it’s about a dude shutting into a pie so the fact that Barry could actually make it a smart comedy then they really found something special.

@@totallydarknessfilms2352 Oh my gosh that has to be what they've alluded to in interviews! They've said that from the start the plan was to make a show about a hitman who falls in love with acting and then *something else* happens, but they haven't gotten to that thing yet. That would be great.

Most likely and not just that but changed what they originally intended the movie to be. It was probably going to be a raunchy comedy with poop jokes, however because of his performance it’s gonna be a dry comedic film about a dude who lost his girl and shits into a pie.

THIS SHOW IS INCREDIBLE! BILL HADER IS AMAZING! I don’t know about everyone else but when I watch this scene, I am so tense and uncomfortable. Like I’m almost scared of Barry and that is why this show is brilliant. Because on paper, this scene is ridiculous. It’s pure comedy. The whole audition piece is bullshit and the questions they ask him are meant to make you laugh. However, the tense atmosphere created by Hader and the background music changes the tone of the scene entirely! You should be laughing at them asking his height. You should be laughing at the voices the casting director is doing. You should, at the very least, be laughing at the dialogue! But you’re not. Because you’re looking at Barry and his whole face alone tells you that you should be terrified of him and what he’s about to do. There’s a clear burning fury in his eyes that gets progressively more intense as the scene goes on. And I’m sitting here with a lump in my throat, wide eyed, on the edge of my seat in anticipation. That blend of genres makes this show. And Hader leaves me speechless in moments like these. It’s almost as if he’s saying “oh so you know me from SNL? You think I’m just a funny guy who does impressions? Well watch this shit.” Bill Hader, I am in awe of you. Cannot wait for season 3.

Rewatching the show until the finale it’s a damn shame we never saw the movie they were gonna make. It was going to be a silly raunchy comedy that would’ve been in a bargain bin at target. However his audition definitely had an effect on the director making him rethink the movie as a clever dark comedy about guy who just stops giving a shit, and giving a shit pie to some dude. That sounds like an A24 movie or something.

*possible spoilers if you haven’t watched the last episode* I really didn’t pay much attention to this scene the first couple of times I watched it because the dialogue is awful (I know it’s supposed to be, but it gives me second hand embarrassment), but this time I realized that he’s probably going to get the part. Whenever the show returns, I wonder how they’ll handle Gene knowing the truth, at least to some degree, and Barry possibly having an acting job. Oh, and the fact that he killed a couple dozen people in a blind rage.
