First time around I didn't even realize why she thought Natalie stole her story, but "desserts" and "Central Park" were two things Sally and Natalie were told the algorithm likes, meaning Natalie retooled the show idea to make it exactly what the system would want, but also sucked any real meaning out of it in the process. You can totally understand why Sally's so upset about it, from her perspective her trauma is being twisted into something meaningless and vapid by someone else trying to use it to succeed without her, on top of the fact that the earnest and cathartic version she tried to create got rejected by the very system Natalie is trying to exploit. But meanwhile, Natalie finally found a way out from under Sally's thumb, even if she had to hurt Sally to do it, and she's actually succeeding better on her own. It's why I love this show, even when the characters are doing something reprehensible you can still sympathize with why they're doing it. The characters aren't one note, they feel like real people with real complexities. And Sarah Goldberg knocks it out of the park everytime, she's so phenomenal.

This scene is terrific, but I think the reason they snubbed her is because this scene is not comedic whatsoever. The signs were there, just not so obvious. She only began being attracted to him after he had began to out act her. Since he had no other prospects, she likely got some sort of sense of power being the only woman around him. And finally breaking up with him only confirmed that she was easily swayed by her emotions, since she believed herself to be of a higher status...hence why she was ok with doing it because she thought her life would sky rocket with fame from that point.

Sally would honestly be the worst kind of person to deal with in real life because she is completely incapable of being happy when anyone else is doing well or better than her. Instead she resents their success and projects all her insecurities onto that person. She blows up at Natalie here because she can't stand the fact that someone else from her acting class, all of whom she considered to be inferior, could possibly be doing better than her. It was exactly the same when Barry got that audition for a movie. While she has genuinely gotten fucked over like with how BanShe cancelled Joplin, many of her failures stem purely from her narcissism and spitefulness. In the first season, an acting friend who got a lead role on a show recommended Sally for a part and rather than being grateful and excited for her friend, she bombs the audition because she's thrown off by her friend's success. Sally wants to tell her story through her art, but she's too narcissistic to be honest enough to face who she is as a person. Oh yeah and she's just kind of fucking crazy.

Rewatching this scene and reading the comments made me realize Sally and Barry actually aren't so different. Both characters only care about themselves at the end of the day, and if something doesn't go their way, instead of accepting the consequences, they commit bad actions. Barry "cares" about people until they threaten to expose his assassin lifestyle, then he kills them. Sally "cares" about people until they do better than she does, then she sulks, harasses, and bullies them. Both are perfectly happy with throwing others under the bus to save their own skins.

Honestly, Barry AND Sally went past the point of no return. Sally just took a little longer to get there and it was a gradual decline. Whereas Barry seemed to be suffering from the beginning of the season. It's going to be an incredibly interesting Season 4 when they pick up where they left off. I'm excited to see how Hank and Christobal come back, how Fuches meets his demise and how Sally deals with the fallout of everything crashing down around her. I can't wait.

@@ellie1903 I relate to Sally a lot actually. When you struggled and have a dream you can get like tunnel vision and get so passionate about it . @@love-ip7sz lmfao Natalie isn’t trying to ruin her career, she simply exposed sally for being a shit person which she did all on her own by freaking out like someone with a low emotional iq. Sally is in the wrong here a hundred times. Sally thinks because her previous bf put his hand around her neck she is somehow deserving of everything that comes with Hollywood, when she couldn’t even keep her own show around for more than a day. And just because your dreams are “important” you don’t get to treat everyone like shit around you, and expect them to keep being nice to you. People aren’t doormats

That little moment, when we see Nathalie treat her assistant like Sally treated her... the usual cycle of abuse, with victim repeating the pattern of the abuser and becoming one themselves. We saw that with Sally, now it's Nathalie's turn and it will be passed down every single time. An automatic abuse machine that basically run itself and ruin life without any sense or reason.

The way she reacts to her trauma are totally realistic and validated. But what makes Sally so flawed is not that she thinks deserves more because of her trauma, but that others deserve less. Just because Natalie "didn’t have a hand around her neck", she wasnt deserving of success. The goal of any actor is not just to understand your own feelings, but also attempt to understand your scene partner's. It’s sad that Sally was so caught up in her trauma that she couldn’t do that. Again, not her fault, but still.

The next time I hear someone brag about having "no filter" I'm going to show them scenes from Barry. It makes you think how sometimes people who go on about how truthful they are really just use it as an excuse to say whatever angry, selfish thing comes into their head regardless of the consequences. Sarah Goldberg's performance here gives you really valuable clue as to why "Joplin" failed without us even seeing the show. It was "her story", and if she shoehorned in ten, fifteen, twenty lines about how great everyone thinks her character is in episode one the audience isn't going to be entertained they're just going to roll their eyes and pur on a a sitcom instead. That's why mentioning Everybody Loves Raymond is such a great framing device, an easy on the brain family comedy....sure. But it held such universal appeal Russia made it's own version of the show for goodness sake. Comedy and drama have always been at odds, Bill Hader's screenplays make them come together and explode.

I think there maybe some influence from Barry but I also think its meant to show how Sally, and even other people’s judgmental view of Barry’s break down, was arrogant and hypocritical. Barry’s reaction and conduct was driven by his sense of futility and failure and his desire to fix it. Sally’s blow up is very similar as are the ramifications. I think we in the audience tend to view Barry’s mindset and attitude as something limited to him but in truth we’re all in someways selfish and capable of snapping over setbacks. Just without the whole mass murder and violence aspects hopefully.
