One of the best games I've ever seen. Essentially a playoff game. The Jets linebackers played their lanes to perfection in the first half. 1997 was an amazing year for Barry Sanders. It was an amazing year for me as a fan as well. There are many reasons Barry achieved that milestone, most of which are Barry's talent and determination. Now many have given credit to the Offensive Line which is very much deserved, but there is a group of players that I think were forgotten...the defense. I just watched the game again and realized some things possibly went unnoticed because it was overshadowed by Barry's accomplishment as well as the devastating injury to Reggie Brown. Sanders needed 2 yards and the Lions punted with a little over 3 minutes left in the game. The Jets needed a win and with the playoffs on the line that could have easily been the last time Barry touched the ball. But the defense did some very impressive things to get the ball back into Sanders hands. If not for them, the quest for 2000 yards may never have happened. Of course it took Barry Sanders and the Lions team an entire season to cross the 2000 yard barrier, i just had to give the defense some much deserved love.

This was the final game for the New York Jets in that uniform set and logo, the uniform set dated to 1990, the logo to 1978, to a modernized version of the Namath-era uniforms. This look they had in this game was pretty good, however. It'd be nice to bring it back.

This is the greatest nfl game I ever saw. The noise incident was crazy.

I remember when Scott Mitchell was with the Miami Dolphins and stepped in for an injured Dan Marino for a couple of games, and thinking, this guy could turn out to be pretty good if given a chance. Boy, did I turn out to be wrong.

Dead wrong

Yeh If the lions had a better QB during this time they would of went further into the playoffs. Mitchell was so inconsistent

Lots of bad passes but too many drops. I remember Herman Moore being better than he was in this one.

Scott Mitchell. I remember when he imitated Wayne Fontes in 96. That was his downfall.

Didn't help the lions offense scheme/gameplan was predictable and basic and the lions coach looks like he has no idea how to call plays best suited for a QB.

I had the privilege of being able to go to this game. It was at the old Pontiac Silverdome where on any given Sunday the Lions no matter how bad could beat anyone in this stadium. This particular game had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows! The Lions won and made the playoffs by doing so, and Barry got his 2000 yards but Reggie Brown broke his neck in this game and never walked again, heartbreaking.

Actually, he made a full recovery, but that was the end of his football career.

Wow, I never realized just how screwed the Jets got by the lack of instant replay. That interception wasn't even close to being in bounds.

Outside of Barry being the best ever and remembering watching him hit 2000, I'll never forget the "crowd is so loud that the refs call penalties" around 1:25:00 Yes, the refs made the Lions home crowd stay quiet while the opposing team had the ball. I don't care about what draconian rule may exist, that's a rarely brought-up example of how The NFL has a long history of treating The Lions differently. I can't believe a Raider or Packer or Steeler crowd would ever be told to not make noise by the league/refs.

Seattle's stadium was actually designed to magnify the crowd noise. TImes change I guess.

I remember watching this as a Dolphin fan wanting the Jets to lose soo bad and for Barry to get the record. I remember seeing that “excessive crowd noise” penalty and getting super upset. I was like “what’s the point of homefield advantage?”. Surprised it took so long but they finally got rid of the penalty in 2007.

This game is a perfect example of how Barry Sanders was. If he got 30 carries in a game, 25 of them would be for a loss, or short gains. But 5 of those 30 carries would be for gains of 20 yards or more.

coltsrule5150 that’s because he had a horrible line

Barry is such a legend…. And what a ridiculous rule that the home crowd couldn’t be “too loud”, as the ref warned the Detroit crowd in the 4th quarter. Thank God that rule went away

I was there. It was insanely loud and the officials had to tell the crowd to quiet down numerous times. The one guy got injured and Sanders hit that record. I was 11 years old.

I just realized this was the only game outside the afc east of the 1997 jets lost all year. To think a 1-15 team would finish 9-7 the next year is impressive
