In honor of Free Game Friday the NFL presents: "The Fake Spike" - Dan Marino leads a vicious Dolphins comeback capped off by the infamous "Fake Spike"!
Time Codes:
13:54 B. Esiason 33-yard pass to R. Moore
17:52 N. Lowry 24-yard Field Goal
20:00 D. Marino intercepted by J. Hasty
28:05 Dolphins force turnover on downs at the 1-yard line
37:19 Marino intercepted by B. Washington
42:54 Esiason 30-yard TD pass to J. Mitchell
51:04 B. Parmalee fumbles, recovered by B. Washington
56:42 Esiason 69-yard pass to A. Monk
58:16 B. Baxter 3-yard TD run
1:05:20 Marino 10-yard TD pass to M. Ingram
1:14:46 Esiason 14-yard TD pass to J. Mitchell
1:20:18 M. Ingram makes nice catch for first down
1:20:40 Marino 17-yard TD pass to M. Ingram
1:28:35 Esiason intercepted by T. Vincent
1:32:15 Marino 28-yard TD pass to M. Ingram
1:38:25 Dolphins cause three fumbles in a row
1:40:40 O. McDuffy muffs punt, recovered by J. Thornton
1:42:35 Esiason intercepted by J. Brown
1:50:46 Dolphins begin game winning drive
1:55:29 Marino fakes spike, 8-yard TD pass M. Ingram
2:01:05 Jets final drive
After falling behind 17-0, the Dolphins looked like they were heading for their third straight loss and essentially ending their playoff hopes. But Hall of Fame quarterback, Dan Marino, would not let his team fall apart, after rallying the team back he tossed the game winning score in the final seconds with a touchdown pass created by a fake spike.

It's a crime that Elway has 2 rings and Marino has none. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on Elway because we share a division. I just think that Marino was arguably the best QB the league ever saw, and he never won a championship.
@Ghostmotorfinger
@Ghostmotorfinger 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheAutumnWind_RN4L I couldn't agree more with your assessment. People seem to forget Terrell Davis carried that Broncos offense. Elway had great targets like Rod Smith. Who did Marino have?. Oronde Gadsden? Shula and Jimmy Johnson... Hell the entire Dolphins front office failed Marino in my opinion. You get Marino a decent O-Line and a running game where he wasn't slinging it 40 times a game. With some outside help. Just a shame. I consider Marino to be the best Quarterback I have ever seen play.
@TheAutumnWind_RN4L
@TheAutumnWind_RN4L 4 жыл бұрын
@@Ghostmotorfinger Marino is the greatest quarterback I've ever seen play, as well, in an era where athleticism was near what it is today, but the pure savagery of tackle football was far greater than what it is right now. These quarterbacks couldn't tie Roger Staubach's shoes, let alone Dan Marino's, and they're putting up these ridiculous numbers, passing his records in situations that they didn't have to play in. Davis secured his HoF induction simply because he got Elway those two rings, with outstanding performances in Superbowls 32 and 33. You are spot on in everything you just said, GMF, and it's a shame that revisionist history leaves this man out of the conversation of the greatest player of all time, or at least the greatest QB.
@Ghostmotorfinger
@Ghostmotorfinger 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheAutumnWind_RN4L I appreciate that. You are absolutely correct about today's version of the game of football. Now we all realize that things always progress and circumstances change. Look at football from the 1950's compared to the glorious 1970's, light years difference. But you hit the nail on the head about revisionist history in talking about Dan Marino in the conversation as the greatest quarterback of all time. His skill set has yet to be seen in anyone again nor do I think we will in our lifetime.

I remember watching this game and thinking he should just fake the spike because of how he was moving the ball on that drive. Then he actually did it! It was so awesome. To see it here in real time really gives it justice how the Jets were caught off guard. Almost every other highlight of this is in slow motion. Even to this day I have only seen it attempted a few times since then.

He thought the Jets had the game one and he nearly blew a gasket when Marino's fake spike turned into a TD pass. I felt bad for him, but it was one of the memorable moments in football history. It would of course been a bigger deal is it was in the post season.

Wish we saw more Pro Sets run today. If there's a two man backfield today it's always I or offset-I. Pro set kind of faded out around 2005-2006 while those other two back sets stayed for some reason. Useful formation to pass and a lot of variance (can offset the back to one side, can move them closer to the line or further). We also don't see offset singleback sets anymore either.

After Pete was fired, the Jets brought in Rich Kotite, who infamously passed up Warren Sapp for Kyle Brady, who Belichick really wanted when he was coaching the Browns. After the Jets drafted Brady, BB traded down for a future pick in the 1996 Draft. That draft pick would be used on Ray Lewis, after the old Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens.

Then he threw the Super Bowl by not running Beast Mode! Had to get those #s right! On the date 2/1 (February 1) on the down 2nd and 1 (or goal) with 21 seconds left (21 seconds on clock at end of play) Russell Wilson's 21st pass (He finished 12-21) was intercepted by a rookie, who had never played on the goal line, wearing #21

I was angry back then when they let Pete Carroll go.. He was the players coach. I remember watching this game, extremely disappointed. Seeing Rob Moore in this video reminded me when players played even with a broken arm, he had a cast on and was still catching the balls.. Loved Rob Moore and Al Toon

Because it was Marino and because it was the fake spike, no one really remembers that the Jets sort of dominated play early...and that Pete Carroll passed on kicking a couple possible field goals. That's why you don't give a competitor like Marino a chance. As a football fan though, I was disappointed that Boomer threw that last ball out of the end zone. You know he sat up all night thinking about it.

Ronnie Lott was playing for Jets. Esiason realizes it’s his role in the NFL to have camera close ups as future HoF QBs win legendary games & Pete Carroll wondering if he would be better if coaching college to prepare for another shot at the NFL where he wouldn’t make the same mistakes again. Finally Ravens Mark Ingram’s father catching the winning TD.
