This truck is truly a game changer for the full size truck market. This will be one of the first Plug In hybrid Trucks that has came out and could force other manufactures to change coarse to make similar style powertrains.

Who claims this is dumb? I’m not even going to say it’s smart. It should have been common sense all along. I had this idea years ago. Why do you think people are trying to install generators in Tesla’s? It’s about time a production vehicle came from the factory like this. This is what it takes for me to buy an EV, a built-in gas generator.

I like it because you still get 130 miles of range purely electric to get you to and from work for a few days Pure electric cost 1/4 what gas cost as long as u charge at home then for road trip or towing a camper use the range extender.. simple

Diesel locomotive technology comes to the truck world! That gives an electic drivetrain enough versatility to be of use to the average Joe. The lightning is great, until you want to head up north hunting for the weekend or pull your boat down to the river and back in a day. I think this is going to be a real game changer. Plus the possibility of using it as a mobile power source. Great video, thanks for sharing.

If this truck could actually tow 14,000 lbs, that negates my need for a 2500 as well. That's significantly better than the current 1500 line. This seems to check all boxes for all my requirements in a truck. It's definitely the best of both worlds (EV and pickup capabilities).

Okay. This is great and all, but with you paying for two power plants (ICE and Bat), you have many more points of failure, more weight, and of course, more money. Also, think of all those heavy trucks out there on the road. What is the impact on the roads? Will it work? Will it be worth the cost? Will it be covered by a much better warranty? It's basically the same as a locomotive, right? Let's see how it does in the first year or three. They have a long way to go on this, but I suspect everyone will do this at some point. This truck could be the answer to many issues, but it also could have impacts that weren't thought about. We'll see.

Will be interesting to see what the miles per kWh is going to be. Then we can calculate and compare with fuel prices and miles per gallon. I am guessing that there is not much savings anymore, assuming you get little more than 1 miles per kWh. And using the V6 engine with a less than 40% efficiency to generate electricity will be great as a backup for the battery but not efficient when running that way.

I would hardly call it genius. It’s literal common sense. If it’s genius then I should be getting paid millions of dollars and work for mainstream vehicle manufacturers in the product development sector because I had this idea years ago when EVs first came out. It’s the perfect bridge and is much cheaper to manufacturing than a full-on BEV because it doesn’t need as big a battery. I mean people with teslas have been trying to add generators for years. It’s about time they started adding a generator from the factory.

Personally, I've always wondered why they ever bothered to develop parallel drivetrains in plug-in hybrids. It just seems so much simpler to have a generator connection in a range-extended EV than to try and connect the engine to a drive train. This should probably be the default setup of all plug-in hybrids. Though I do note that there are some stupid California EV designations that requires the Range-Extended EV designation to only apply when the vehicle has less gas-range than electric-range and than it would only allow the engine to run after the battery is empty. Because of these stupid designation regulations the BMW I3 needed to release in North America with a smaller gas tank than in Europe, and probably hindered it's performance flexibility.

This is simpler than the volt, the volt still had a transmission and the gas engine could directly/mechanically power the wheels at times. Agreed, this is the truck we need to bridge the gap between ICE and Electric. The performance numbers are staggering, all that power and payload and towing are amazing for any half ton.

Volt likely did this because it was otherwise unable to maintain highway speeds once battery was depleted. BMW i3 Rex is very similar to ramcharger and it is unable to maintain 70 mph once battery is depleted and running on gas range extender. While towing a heavy trailer, I suspect ramcharger may suffer from this as well. Pentastar is a pretty tiny engine to be powering a heavy truck rated for a 14k pound trailer.

Could be! We will have to wait and see. From my research it sounds like a battery is required as a buffer between motor need and engine output. Thank you for watching!
@jacuzzibusguy4 ай бұрын
Will almost certainly do this as there is a loss each time energy is converted. This setup already double converts energy: rotational -> electrical then electrical -> rotational. Putting the battery in the mix would require two more conversions, which would be super wasteful. It’ll be able to recoup some energy with regenerative braking which will help make up for the inefficiency of the gasoline generator powertrain.

They could have done this with an option with 4 banger and a smaller battery. Penalty of weight only come up with EV's and hybrids, but what matters is range and cost. This doesn't just compete with EV truck, it competes with all trucks. Take 3 rams out on a 1000 mile long range towing trip, diesel, hemi, and ramcharger. It may be able to do this sort of hp very briefly, but would completely drain the battery in less than 8 minutes. Once battery is depleted, or to keep percentage from falling further, the wheel motors will be limited to about 170 hp, which is the max rated power available from the generator.

I’d totally buy this truck and absolutely never plug it into anything except a gas pump, I’d also probably never tow a thing. I’m getting it because this is how the majority of EVs should be right now. It’s an EV you can fill with gas. What’s not to like. Why would I get a gas powered truck when this is roughly the same price, has more horsepower, better performance and handling, and heavy enough to make me feel safer around these stupid reckless drivers around me who tailgate in their full size SUVs and trucks.
@davemiller61215 ай бұрын
@mitchellefird5245 That will be a waste of gas, a PHEV is not more efficient than an ice vehicle if you never plug it in, its actually far worse. The EV is the most efficient. If you are afraid of the other people driving around you, you will be fine in any truck or large SUV. BTW I tell my kids all the time, "No one is 100% at fault in a collision." Both sides have some blame, maybe one more that the other.

It’s terribly inefficient to use a gas generator to power electric wheel motors. Jay Leno has a vehicle with this sort of transmission that’s 100 years old. I predict ramcharger will be great around town but will be the wrong choice for hauling heavy loads long distance at highway speed. Once vehicle exceeds the battery only range and has to rely on the pentastar to power the wheels, this truck is likely to be a real dog and get much worse mpg than a traditional hybrid. Rather than a traditional transmission, ramcharger will use what I refer to as a “magnetic transmission” which is much less efficient. Ramcharger efficiency will come from the ability to drive on battery only. Once battery is depleted, ramcharger will likely be neither efficient or powerful.
