The two are all too often used interchangeably.... and incorrectly... as are their opposites. I've long said that underrated is the most over used and misused word in music. How many times have we heard - ">insert-name-here< is the greatest guitarist / drummer / singer / whatever... EVER!!" when in fact, they're competent but pretty much just average but they play stuff that person happens to find pleasing? In nearly all cases, if you played 5 random musicians for them playing unfamiliar music, they couldn't pick out the one who they claim is the greatest.

After reading a couple hundred very entertaining comments, I wonder if the label "overrated" is being confused with "overplayed" or "oversaturated?" At 68, I'm old enough to pretty much remember it all when it was shiny and new, but there are certain bands that are on perpetual rotation on classic rock stations. For example, I am sick to death of Stairway To Heaven, but I also struggle to think of a better crafted rock song (as opposed to rock n' roll). There is a reason why Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the Beatles are oversaturated, at least for those of us who heard these songs at least 100,000 times. But overrated? Not at all. For me, it is about genres. The Velvet Underground is overrated to me because they seemed to be more a New York City thing than a national band, and the Cool Kids listened to something edgy and different than the usual stuff on the radio. I never was into punk or grunge, either. My tastes tend to run towards musicianship, which is why I love prog and mainstream hard rock. But everyone has different tastes.

The Beatles music has no swing, it is soulless. Has anyone ever danced to a Beatles song bar 1 or 2 songs? It all sounds incredibly dated too. Compare the catchy and admittedly danceable Lady Madonna from 1968 to the quite similar I'm Waiting For The Man from 1967 which has a layered groove. Personally I'm not one for ranking music, people should just listen to what they like, and in the proportion that maximises their own enjoyment. In that regard more or less every band, album and song is over rated because terms like "essential listening", are bandied around. They are just another band that can be happily absent from a record collection of hundreds of albums and the owner wouldn't miss them one bit. In my opinion there are only two things related to the type of music this channel discusses where one should not use the over rated label, the albums Dark Side Of The Moon and Rumours. These have been purchased in large numbers in multiple countries continuously since their release over 50 years and almost 50 years ago respectively. In contrast Sgt Pepper relies on 10 multiple anniversary years and that publicity to get sales. The much more recent Thriller, widely documented as the biggest seller has dropped off considerably in the last decade and thus maybe much more of its time; it is outside the scope of this topic but a good reference point. When it comes to streaming the only classic rock artist that makes an impression is Queen, so there is an argument to be made they get a pass too as they are clearly reaching across multiple generations.

Radio 2. Media 3. Sales driven push $$ To see past the curtain of Oz, one must recognize them in context of time. For the Iconic bands on the list you must have perspective. If an individual would take the time to listen to the music of the other bands of the era and what music they were producing and also what came before them, then and only then can you see/hear why some of these bands are so highly regarded at the time. Over time they become legend for breaking ground. I would never expect my teenage grand-kids to listen to the Beatles at my house and it become a life changing experience for him or her. They have no context or point of reference. I fell in love with 1950s Doo-Wop at 13 years old after seeing American Graffiti in 1973. As soon as that music was put in context the lights came on and I wanted more doo-wop, a Ducks Ass haircut and a hotrod. Carry on Cuz!!

I grew up listening to my brother saying the Stones were much better than the Beatles. That was his opinion. If it was left up to the Stones, no other British band would have made it here, because at the time, they were a cover band, and basically a bar band. Whether you like it or not, the Beatles were trailblazers, and they brought rock and roll music to maturity. In their era, they inspired others to push the musical envelope, making other bands try to top them. Only just started watching and jolted into a comment due to Nirvana being at 9. If anything, they are under-rated by the muso snobs who didn't give Nevermind anything other than lukewarm reviews, yet which became the biggest album on the planet for a good five years. It's hard for those brought up on "traditional" hard rock to understand the blood curdling rage us (then) young men felt at the time, that Kurt Cobain filled in the late 80's and early 90's with his brand of melody grunge pop filled lyric and slow fast slow thunderclap noise of wonderfully joyous arrangements and yet awfully dark.... 'Polly' ; 'Something in the way', through to "In bloom" 'et all - that was also radio friendly. Plus the dude was a good looking lad that coulda had any lady he wanted, but ended up with The Hole lady...we know how that all turned out before he joined the 27 club. Nirvana's influence is still felt today, especially by any bands that want to try to become the antidote to this current Taylor Swift era of toilet paper music - i.e, yes sh - it.

I was always more of a Soundgarden fan. I, in my opinion, think they are a better band. I think Nirvana are a bit overrated. But they are not underrated. About the reviews? Ever heard of Robert Christgau? Well he is known as the "The Dean of American Rock Critics," a nickname which he gave to himself actually 🙄. He gave Nevermind an A. He gave Superunkown an A-. But his reviews on certain genres are the most biased opinions in music. He constantly puts down heavy metal and prog. Loves almost anything punk or rap. He gave a record an A without really listening to it. What is great now is you can now listen to albums before you buy them. However, I do respect your opinion. Now about Taylor Swift. I think she is very talented musician and business woman. However, I find her song writing to be extremely childish, boring and uninspiring. She writes songs about love, people who have done her wrong and ex's. She calls that karma, I call it pettiness and uninspiring. Blues and country music have been singing and writing songs about how that no good man/woman broke their heart. There is no growth. I sure do miss good music. Oh, got to go. Their defining moment (Sgt Peppers) was only decent because Pink Floyd were in another room at Abby Road recording Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, and the members of The Beatles took turns sneaking in to listen (copy) what Floyd were doing. Led Zep absolutely over rated, Page was just a thief who stole all of his best bits from other better musicians. It didn't all work, and Cobain's noteriety may have exaggerated their celebrity, but there's no denying that they were the most original band of the last 30 years. Grateful Dead: Everyone knows it's about the whole hippy vibe. You buy into or it means nothing to you. They were sloppy as hell but "Truckin' is a pretty good song. Zeppelin redefined the way rock musicians played. Yes, they stole a lot of riffs, the latter albums were uninspired and their lyrics sucked, but they are important. Oasis: Meh. Velvet Undegroud: They appeal to the downtown hipster wannabes. They inspired people with no talent to give it a go since Lou Reed and the gang achieved success with virtually none themselves. Rush: The early stuff was a bit wankery, but Moving Pictures and Signals are great. That's all you need. Pink Floyd own that sluggish atmospheric vibe. It's not for me though. Led Zeppelin is pretty overrated. Yeah yeah, I know they were directly and indirectly very influential and prior to them hard rock was a fairly amorphous genre. They managed to distil the essence of it and make it more punchy. I spent most of my late teen years trying to appreciate them, and I've heard all their records many times. But Page is a sloppy guitarist, Plant lost his voice halfway through their career. His vocal style isn't even all that original, guys like Steve Marriot and Terry Reid were doing similar styles a few years before him. Not to mention that female vocalists like Janice Joplin. Bonham is a powerful drummer but I don't listen to a band for drums. Like most people drum solos on live albums are to be skipped, not played. But it's the *plagiarism* that really is the sore point. I'd estimate about 70% of the debut is either based on other people's songs (like Dazed or Confused) or they're blatant rip offs, like Black Mountain Side. The plagiarism continues on and off for most of their career. Even the riff to Whole Lotta Love appears in Hey Joe covered by Hendrix two years earlier. And really I can't understand why anyone would want to listen to a muddy sounding stodgy blues rip off like The Lemon Song in today's age. I wouldn't care so much but all my life I've had people say that Led Zeppelin are the greatest rock band of all time, or the greatest band of all time. Such excessive praise seems unjustified when they relied so much on other people's music for their success. I refuse to bow down before them as musical gods. That's objectively why I think they're overrated. I don't really like them for some subjective reasons. The guitar tone- it's thin, scratchy and cold sounding. For a supposedly heavy rock band I find the guitar unsatisfying. I much preferred Black Sabbath and even earlier bands like Cream and Hendrix I find have a heavier, beefier guitar tone. I just hate those hippy-ish acoustic folk songs they did. And the fans are really annoying. Like the ones getting butthurt at this comment.

Some of the names on this list have sold millions of albums wide world ,so how can they be overrated when so many people like their records. Its an over used term which means nothing, if you like or don't like an Album/group/singer it does not mean they are over or under rated, its a nonsense saying. Thank you ,you made good comments to the list

There's a lot to unpack from this list and the opinions surrounding it so I'll try to keep it short, and yes, I'm speaking to the man behind the channel and all of you as well. I look at overrated bands as being in the right place at the right time in terms of the music and more importantly, the commercial viability. Every single one of the bands mentioned had the right music and the right advertising. Oasis would never have survived the Brit Pop era if it weren't for the marketing and their forced rivalry with Blur. Nirvana came onto the scene when grunge was healthy and growing at the very tail end of the 80's going into the 90's. It can absolutely be said that Alice in Chains is better than Nirvana but the latter was more commercially viable in the end and still is because of Nevermind and Kurt's suicide at 27, thus being immortalized by his fans and put on the "great artists who died at 27" list. When it comes to the likes of Zeppelin, The Floyd, and the Beatles, the marketing behind them catapulted them into stardom when the time and music was right as well. I tend to joke with people that I'm too much of a Floyd fan to listen to Zeppelin so I simply won't attempt to try and analyze them. Your opinions of the Floyd very much mirror my own and your analysis of AHM gave me a new appreciation for the album I never considered. When it comes to The Beatles, loving their music has been a lifelong journey and I can't say it's all good but the right stuff tickles my music bone with glee and gloom. Imagine falling in love with Accross the Universe while simultaneously the woman I loved and her daughter who called me Dad just up and left me. Had to put that song on the backburner and is still there. As an amateur historian of music, I also cannot stress enough to people the importance of how bands like The Floyd, Beatles and Beach Boys created new techniques for recording and mixing sounds into extraordinary works of art and that modern music could and would never be the same. Thanks as always for your words of wisdom and maybe try this for a poll: The most overrated bands most people have never heard of. (Until I went to college, I had no idea who the likes of King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, and Gentle Giant were, and punk that wasn't the Ramones)

Richie Blackmore said Pete Townshend is "overrated"? What a coincidence, because I've always thought that Deep Purple was "overrated", and for the life of me never "got" why anybody even liked them at all. I hereby nominate "Deep Purple" as the most overrated band of not only the classic rock era, but of all time! Blackmore isn't a pimple on Pete Townshend's tuchus!

Like Caitlin Moran said: "The Beatles is a grid from which I understand everything ... the way you can progress as an artist or human, I understand it throught the first you'll be in Hamburg and do your ten thousand hours, (---) and then you'll go through you know your punky urgent phase, then you'll go through your imperial phase, then you go through your experimental phase, then it all go heroin bad".

Much of this says more about the people who voted than it does about the bands themselves. Some people don't have the emotional or mental acuity to appreciate the music in its time. It is the old trope about I don't know about art but I know what I like.

agree with most of that, Pink Floyd the Syd Barrett days they was magnificent, after Syd they suffered a bit from head up their arses syndrome in a big way, as for Blackmores take on Pete Townshend, Petes guitar work is limited to suit his songwriting also playing with Keith Moon and John Entwistle restricted him, however since Keith and John passed Pete Townshends guitar work has flourished given his new found freedom to express himself more live on stage......big Who fan here, also dont rate Blackmores bash at Folk, but he could never compete with the great Richard Thompson, Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span etc etc.....a lot of the Beatles stuff was Tosh, but a lot of their stuff was truly wonderful....Love Music Love Life, could say that about Beer as well...haha.

Most online criticism of Nirvana often comes across as elitist and snobbish. What Nirvana did was so basic, so derivative and so lacking in depth that you'd think critics would manage to do something better at some point in their lives. There seems be an attitude among some that music is either as complex as jazz-fusion or prog rock at its most experimental or it's 'mainstream' garbage. I'm not saying that anyone has to like Nirvana. But I don't think writing hits is a crime especially hits that define an entire generation and epoch. Nor is it a fair to act like just because Kurt Cobain wasn't Tom Scholz or Frank Zappa that his contribution and creativity deserves no respect.

I seem to remember Nirvana drowning in elite critical praise when they were current, so this is a baffling comment to me

This is great. I love your deadpan delivery, even-handedness and range of knowledge. Good catch on the Bert Jansch episode, but see also Davey Graham (White Summer and Over the Hills both cop his version of She Moved through the fair). The Dead weren't particularly ill-disciplined when they played with Bob Bylan, by the way. It's only with the VE that I disagree with any of the choices here. If nothing else, it gave us Lou Reed. Do you really think the Beatles were that good. Borrowed from Bob Dylan? Well, yes, but more. By the time Sgt Pepper came out Bob had already released Bringing it all back home, Highway 61 revisited and Blonde on Blonde (first rock double album - beats Zappa's double by a week and Sgt Pepper by just under a year (Highway 61 kills it by about 18 months)!). So whos driving the album culture now? Obviously you do credit Dylan, but don't dismiss this as a Dylan Fan Rant. I should point out that even very good bands can be over-rated, and some of the ones on your list (not Nirvana, not Oasis, by the way) are very good, but still over-rated. Cheers.

As already alluded to in a few other posts, just because you like something doesn't mean it's genius, and just because you DON'T like something, doesn't mean it's shit or overrated. Let's also give credit to producers who (as I've heard from some less-than-awesome demos from bands) often times transformed a band's mediocre ideas into amazing finished products.

Saying Rush are overrated because they have no soul is just that one person’s opinion, a preference which doesn’t make them overrated. I’ve always based overrated artists on their technique/skill or lack of. Factors like Influence I’ve never taken into account because it’s too loose a term, it’s a preference again as every band has influence to a certain degree.

You consistently produce some of the best music-focused videos out here. Your slapping around of Dream Theater is fully grounded and merited - and I'm a fan. Give me "Images and Words", "Live Scenes From New York" and "SCORE" and I could use the rest for target practice. I have a love/hate relationship with Labrie's DT (screeching) vocals as well as (which you so aptly pointed out) with the band's mindless exhibitionist tendencies. "We get it, guys - your technique is incredible....now how do we escape this 8 min long train crash of a song?" Thank you. Ignore the spoons and keep up the good work.

Terrible list. If a band made an all time great album I think they should be excluded from being considered "Overrated" Led Zeppelin make like 3 or 4 all time great albums in a row. Nevermind is an all time great album, best album of the 90's Foo Fighters could never hold a candle to Nirvana (Honestly Foo Fighters should be on this list, not Nirvana) And the Beatles make like 5 or 6 all time great albums in a span of like 4 or 5 years and then broke up because they knew they'd never top themselves again. People who say the Beatles are over rated are out of their mind.
