Not a band, but the most overrated artist of all time has got to be Beyonce. The press treats her as the ultimate sacred cow, the most important artist of our era. Completely run of the mill commercial r&b with a shrill, unappealing voice and not even the charisma that you would expect from a major pop star. I just genuinely don't get why anyone rates her at all.

Led Zepplin is definitely overrated all of the things you talk about for Queen apply double to them. Also lead singer is pdf file. I don't think Floyd is overrated they are just two very different good bands with a garbage band in between and the Waters stuff was fantastic. I also don't think KISS is really overrated per se they were never a huge puniversal henomenon they just had a persistent cult following and mostly because they were all style and no substance. They never played as good as they looked and there is endless drama and screwups and weirdness in the band. But regardless, he made two very entertaining videos.

I also remember when everyone was going "Tool are amazing", but everything I heard just made me go "Meh." I went to see King Crimson open for Tool 20 years ago. I felt like I was one of the few people there for KC, and it made me feel old. But I sat through the entire Tool show and still felt that KC was the better band. And thank you for calling out Pearl Jam (and the great Americana rant 😆). And yeah, Springsteen has done nothing for me ever since he first burst on the scene in the 70's. He was SUCH a critical darling, but he also championed a very specific east coast urban blue collar way of life that someone like me who grew up in Southern California could not relate to at all. But I felt like the industry was shoving it down my throat, going "THIS IS IMPORTANT -- YOU MUST LIKE THIS!" No thank you.

@@chriscoughlin9289XTC debuted in the late 70s. Oasis debuted in 94. Do you really view them as contemporaries? Btw XTC is genius, but Oasis wrote simple rock/pop anthems that now make for good 90s nostalgia. I don't see, where the problem is and why people have to snobbishly prove their inferiority on every corner by bringing up totally unrelated postpunk/new wave/art rock geniuses? The thing with Oasis is, Noel could get a tune out of very basic chord progressions, which is actually an underrated talent, and Liam looked cool in a parka, also they were funny in a stupid reality tv kinda way. The problem with XTC is, that Andy sounds like a barking seal and doesn't look cool in a parka (Maybe Colin could have pulled off a parka though). I have come here to praise and defend Bruce Springsteen....'s second album. Andy, please give a listen to "The Wild The Innocent and The E Street Shuffle," Bruce Springsteen's second album. It comes from the time when Springsteen got it right. His first album is not bad, but is also somewhat unfocused, sprawling and understated. His third album, Born to Run, is not bad either, but it was when Bruce started to believe his own hype. By the fourth album, he had crawled up his own arse, and some would say he never crawled out. It doesn't help that he changed band members in 1974; keyboardist David Sancious started his own career, to be replaced by the melodramatic flourishes of pianist Roy Britten, and Max Weinberg took over on drums, bringing his simplistic pounding big beat style. Bruce's writing style also changed. I liked his early "use every word in the dictionary" lyrical style more than the direct and simple style he adopted after Born To Run, and unfortunately his music also became basic and rudimentary. "Basic and rootsy" worked for John Fogerty because he is a genius. It just made Bruce's writing unimaginative and dull, and especially maddening when you see what he was capable of on an album like "The Wild, The Innocent..." This second album has some great jams like the funky "E Street Shuffle," and classics "Kitty's Back" and "Rosalita." It has some solid pop ballad writing on "4th of July (Sandy)." Even though it gets a little slack in the middle, there's lots to enjoy on this album. The music and lyrics will take you somewhere, and as a fellow prog fan, I know this is what we're searching for in our musical adventures. Forget the "Brooose!" hype. Forget the myths and legends. I like to think of this album as "the Springsteen album for people who don't like Springsteen." Check it out; I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Brilliant show! How about a show about the underrated bands and artists? I'll start with Deep Purple...I know they're a huge band, but I feel that, unlike their brothers Zep and Sabbath, they'll be forgotten in about one or two generations. Barely anybody mentions the incredible Ian Paice or the genius of Jon Lord... King Crimson maybe? Elp? I'd be curious to hear your take on those bands. Cheers.

Purple are still going and no one has forgotten them yet...I follow a lot of classic rock/hard rock/metal youtube channels and I feel that along with Sabbath, Deep Purple are the most lauded, praised and frequently mentioned band. Because of this, I think they'll still be remembered. Lord and Paice maybe go under the radar but Ian Gillan, David Coverdale and Ritchie Blackmore are constantly praised and talked about. Glenn Hughes too, although also for his work with other bands.

Bruce Springsteen’s Darkness on the Edge of Town is as far away from Bon Jovi as American rock can get. The musical and lyrical poetry of Thunder Road, or Meeting Across the River, both from Born to Run, are still breathtakingly beautiful, 50 years on. And the content of Born in the USA is actually the opposite of the flag waving anthem people thought, in the 80s. Well, Andy did say he knew nothing about this. Fair enough.

No. Greatest rock band ever, easy (The Beatles don't count, they're in a separate category all by themselves). Knocking on them for the ripping off the blues is so overstated - half a dozen songs from early in their career out of 10 years and eight albums.

Prince does not play 40 instruments. (unless you're counting bongos and maracas). He's a good guitar player who can play a little bass, a little piano, a little drums. That's it. But he knows how to sell it! THAT is his genius. He's the world's greatest musical con man. Then again, when you admit you can't tell the difference between Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi then you may need to fine tune your ears. I don't care for either band but I sure as hell can tell there's a MASSIVE difference in style, sound, song structure and musicianship between those two bands.

Anybody who rates Prince definitely wasn't at any of the 3 concerts he did at Wembley Arena in August 1986. I was at the second one, on the third row from the stage, dead centre and it put me off him for life. I was offered hundreds of pounds for my ticket by several different people outside the venue, when hundreds of pounds was a lot of money and my fiancee who attended the gig with me said she'd break up with me if I took the money. The concert was probably the worst one I've ever seen by some distance. Needless to say, after the show during the 200 mile plus journey back home, not a single word was said, though I know she thought, just like I did, WHY DIDN'T WE TAKE THE MONEY.

@andremcpherson1424

@@AndyEdwardsDrummer Wow, Hi Andy, I'm deeply honoured you've replied personally. Thank you for taking the time. Okay, so it wasn't really a very long show, he came on stage late, but the thing that really ruined it for me personally and probably for most of the audience too was that the only song he performed in it's entirety was Purple Rain at the very end. Other than that, it was one verse and a chorus here of one song and one verse and a chorus there of another song and that's the way it played out all evening. He even performed a version of 'How Much Is That Doggie In The Window!' Seriously, he did, very strange! It was all very rushed. At the time, August 1986, Seeing as M.J. was busy doing his Bad album, Prince was arguably the biggest - can I say - pop star, in the world? Purple Rain had happened and Parade was his current album, the single 'Girls And Boys' being released to coincide with the shows. The three shows had certainly been hastily arranged, almost as an after thought. A mere 4 weeks before the three gigs, there was an article in a national tabloid newspaper announcing the shows with the date and time the tickets were going on sale. I'm from the North West of England, had just passed my driving test at the time and drove down to Wembley alone in the early hours to ensure I got tickets, this was my first ever long driving journey. Around the Northampton area I started experiencing extreme driver fatigue and in not knowing the rules, I pulled over on the hard shoulder of the M1 for a sleep. I was awoken by an officer of the law a short time later and was prosecuted for the offence. When I arrived at the Wembley Arena around 4.30am the queue for the box office was already quite long. By the time the box office opened at 10am, the queue was right around the whole arena, such was the demand for tickets. Only 4 tickets per person were allowed to be purchased. This was the first time Prince had come to perform in the UK since he publicly proclaimed he would never play in this country again following the scathing reviews his 'Dirty Mind' concerts received in London (Dominion?) a few years before, so anticipation was off the scale, yet during the concert, you could tell he just didn't want to be there, it was just so apparent. Maybe those bad reviews from a few years before were still on his mind? The house lights went down, there was a huge deafening roar from the crowd, he stated to the audience: "I'm Prince and I've come to play with you!" The title track from Around The World In A Day started up, the curtains opened and for me, it was all down hill from there. Maybe we were unlucky, I know great artists have bad gigs, but boy was he off that night. All in all, just a massive anti climax, I just didn't feel it and I know I wasn't alone. After that, I didn't bother following him anymore.

I don’t think Brits can really appreciate Springsteen. And younger guys need to put on Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town, and listen from beginning to end. THAT’s the Bruce that matters. His lyrics are about topics like drag racing in the streets of an American small town, about working class New Jersey, where it’s not Manhattan OR the heartland, and one ugly town just runs into another (I was there), about men who lost their jobs in the steel mills of our Rust Belt cities. And his music comes from Roy Orbison, Woody Guthrie, Phil Spector, and American R and B. It’s earnest and passionate, almost to a fault. It’s angry and unashamedly nostalgic and sentimental. No English irony and wimsy, no emotional detachment whatsoever. IOW, there isn’t an ATOM of English Aesthetic in Springsteen.

Noooo. The Stones can’t be on the list. Plus I would argue .. they’d be less “overrated” if they came from Kidderminster which is closer to Brian’s home town of Cheltenham. Nicely done in your response.

I can listen to AC/DC (The band that allegedly only plays 4 chords) and in their prime I can recognize every song on the albums, and each song has it's own hook and IS distinguishable from every other song. Then I listen to most other popular bands, even bands of today, and most of their songs on any given album sound exactly the same. You tell me that isn't genius!

It would have to be John too. Of all of them, he embodied the arch-typical Scouse the most in his younger years. Ringo would try talking his opponent down first, Harrison maybe if cornered - Macca - not sure about really. But versus an LSE dropout, would probably still take Macca.

Jealousy is definitely a part of it. Some people feel resentful towards art that gets more attention than they think it should. I don't really get it, myself. Brian Eno once said that every artist gets the amount of attention they deserve.

I'm happy to admit that "overrated" really means something that every man and his dog seems to love, but I (as a committed contrarian) cannot go along with. There's something cool about loving artists that few others have heard of. It means that I can call them my very own....my well-kept secret! All the other stuff? Well, it's just overrated, isn't it? 😜
