I tried this technique out last time I went to practice at the Club I belong to. It made a wonderful difference! As a woman I find there are so many "experts" wanting to coach you that it can be overwhelming when everyone has their different "tips" to give you. I love being able to practice some basic techniques to help me improve my game. Barry delivers the message in very simple terms that is easy to watch and learn from.
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach6 жыл бұрын
Dayamitra. I find this all the time, people giving well meant but naive advice, it is always a problem for the beginner knowing who to listen to. I am very pleased Selina came to see me, she was in the same position as you, doing her own thing but at the same time listening to that well meant/naive advice. She has made good progress and is now playing for a local team when her employment allows.

Thank you for your reply! Since I wrote to you I have secured a good coach that I'm happy with. I have a lesson with him and then come home and check out your video's for similar practices and to see perhaps the same techniques from a different perspective. I am so grateful for this opportunity to play snooker at last after all the years of feeling a little put off around the men! Now I love giving the men something to think about when they play me because I'm not being just a walk over! I enjoy watching all you videos and cannot express my gratitude and gratefulness to be able to play this wonderful game! I spent my teenage years (yes, this does age me, ha!) watching the Pot Black series and wishing I could play the game - and now I can and I love it!

Karen. To achieve what you have achieved you must have natural ability. Many weeks back I asked your opinion regarding unusually strong bounces off the rail. I’m relatively new to Snooker. Your response took me by surprise. I’d never have thought static electricity could be a possible cause. I’ve been playing a good amount since then and haven’t come up with any reasonable theory matching yours. Static electricity it is then.
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach6 жыл бұрын
Mr B. Don't know if I said it last time but it is a physical impossibility for a ball to bounce off the cushion faster than it hit the cushion unless there is another force at work. The only force I can come up with is static electricity, if someone can prove me wrong I will gladly listen and be educated.
@pawandyes6 жыл бұрын
also if there is cue chalk on the ball and the when the ball hits the rail with the chalk mark in between the rail and ball ... you will notice that the ball bounces back much more than if the ball was clean. You can experiment this quite easily ... take two balls in one hand and bounce them simultaneously on the rail at medium/low speed... they will bounce back together and travel the same distance more or less. NOW, make a chalk mark with the cue chalk on the rail and bounce the same two balls with one hand, one ball must hit the chalk mark on the rail. You will notice that the ball which hits the Chalk mark will bounce unusually stronger off the rail and much further than the ball which did not hit the chalk mark.

Hi Barry, nice tutorial. However, I am intrigued why when describing the grip you state that the three points of constant contact with the cue include the third finger. This suggests the first and fourth finger can or should be off the cue in the backswing. I can understand your pinky might come of the cue, but not the second finger. Could you please expand on this and explain what benefit it has on the grip in the backswing?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach Жыл бұрын
Ray. The fourth finger (pinky) can be off the cue but the first finger and second fingers do not lose contact with the cue. I emphasise the third finger contact because this helps to maintain timing on the shot as the hand closes around the cue.

Hi Barry, with so much cue showing from the back Of Selena's grip would she not be better off with a smaller cue? and using screw on extensions? Would there not be a tendency for the cue to want to lift especially say when cuing over the top of a ball. Or would you recommend the cue balance point being advanced?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach6 жыл бұрын
Mr. Selina has had her cue shortened professionally, its always a problem to buy a short cue in the first instance and they usually have to be modified.
@gregtodd24966 жыл бұрын
Excellent video. When doing the three practice strokes before the delivery stroke, where should you be looking? Would you be watching the cue the whole time, before switching to the object ball during the pause?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach6 жыл бұрын
Greg. Firstly let me say that the three practise strokes have been introduced to groove Selina's muscle action in the correct manner and t demonstrate to her the importance of shot preparation. By no means is it mandatory that a player has to perform three preparatory strokes, everyone is different and prepares to play the shot differently. Coming back to your question, the eyes will flit between, cue, cue ball, and object ball, I don't believe in a set pattern for this, what suits one player may not suit another.
@freethinkers67516 жыл бұрын
Hello barry Sir..which cloth is the best for beginners for playing for positional shots..any suggestions....do cloths play an important role on positioning the cue ball for the next shot....plzzzzzzz reply sir...
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach6 жыл бұрын
Neeraj. The cloth on a snooker table plays a very important role in positioning the cue ball. Generally the finer the cloth the easier it is to manoeuvre the cue ball. However, the finer the cloth the more difficult it is to actually control that movement especially for beginners. West of England 6811 is used at the academy in Sheffield, England. and that seems to suit beginners and professionals alike whilst being reasonably hard wearing.

Tell me I have a question If the object ball is at rhe end of one pocket A d the cue bslk is the other side of table how can we pot the object ball wthout any risk
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach3 жыл бұрын
cricket. The answer to this depends upon the exact position of the two balls. Sometimes it is possible to create a slight angle by what is known as pinching a little bit of the pocket, in other words aiming for one side of the pocket opening. Screw or stun can be applied to prevent the cue ball following the object ball into the pocket, it is even possible on very easy pots to pot the ball by hitting the cushion first.

Sir, how do I measure “markings” for myself ? Does is depend on height or is it standard for all ?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach Жыл бұрын
Dr. This is an individual thing depending on height and length of limb and of cause agreement between the coach and player.

Hi Barry I have just ordered a cue I've always played cue sports mainly pool from been a kid but never really played serious in the last 12 year.. I was wondering how you set up the fixed points so I can keep some consistency in my cueing or is it how I feel comfortable. My problem is i get down to every shot different and I actually want to start improving now and get to a decent club standard,
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach6 жыл бұрын
God. Start on the baulk line, place your cue on it then take up your stance and body position taking care not to move the cue off the line while you move the body to the cue. As long as your position conforms to the necessary basics it is largely how you feel comfortable now. Have a look at my videos that show where and how to grip the cue, where to place your bridge hand etc. Now get that cue moving in a nice rhythm and approach every shot in a similar manner which will ultimately establish a pre-shot routine.

Hey Coach I just want to know about the wrist when cueing..should it be firm tight with arm or can it be loose and have its own movement seperately?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach6 жыл бұрын
Mustafa. If you grip the cue correctly it will allow a little wrist to be used, it should be used in harmony with the arm. By that I mean that trying to keep it it the same plane. When players use excessive wrist it tends to cause too much inversion which in turn tends to straighten out as the cue is delivered, this obviously causes cueing across the ball. The wrist should not be firm tight with arm (as you put it) but it should not be loose and have its own separate movement either. Controlling the wrist is important and this is best achieved by using the 'V' at the front of the hand. Having said all of this if you are cueing straight, can play all the shots then your grip is fine.

hi , I am enjoying and benifeted your videos too much, thank you. I am playing snooker from time to time say twice a week but missing a lot of shots.I am using the club cues is this affecting the play much?, mean do you advice to buy a personal cue and what quality you advice?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach6 жыл бұрын
Mohammad. Certainly using club cues is not ideal and it will affect your game and therefore your progress in the game. Please get your own cue but as a beginner it would be advisable to take a more experienced friend with you when you choose. I am afraid you get what you pay for, so although choosing a cue is a personal thing it is also important to go to a reputable dealer. Choose between ash or maple shaft, an ebony butt, three quarter jointed cue or one piece. Make sure it is straight, about 17 to 18 ounces in weight, nicely balanced and no varnish on the shaft.

Also do you have a video explaining the marks on the cue and how to place them? I know the bridge hand one is 10.5" what about the backhand one do you determine this?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach5 жыл бұрын
fabtas. Where you hold the cue can determine the length of the follow through and control of the cue so it is very important, please have a look at my videos which cover this. Videos number one to ten.

13:15 is that wait necessary, after 1, 2 and 3, and pulling back. I seem to loose concentration during that period, I have tried it many times but failed. So I just play the shot after aiming.
@Gerdigordi6 жыл бұрын
You do that to make sure you get the right acceleration in your shot. With no wait you will more likely just kick the ball rather than correctly pushing through the ball. But many players play with no wait, so it's a personal thing - whatever suits you better. It is recommended but not neccessary. You should do some more attempts with shorter pauses. Pulling back and pushing forward should be two seperate motions - so it's rather a "quick stop" than a "wait".
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach6 жыл бұрын
krthkh. Joe Davis described the pause as a deliberate slowing down to help with the transition of driving the cue forward after the final back swing. I use it to aid concentration and to help me focus on the object ball and the line of aim, but if you are happy doing what you are doing then it is obviously not for you.

What is the distance between the but of the cue and the mark (The white tape around the cue)? Thank you.
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach6 жыл бұрын
Zouhair. This varies because everybody's build is different, The arm from elbow to wrist should be approximately vertical, this will dictate where the tape is positioned.

Got a question. I’m going to London for the Texans and jaguars game in November 2019. Where is a good place to go look at pool sticks and accessories???

Jason. You can do no better than paying a visit to John Parris, you can find the address on his website.

Hi Barry Is there a cure for the yips ? Had this issue a long time now driving me crazy 😞
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach Жыл бұрын
Mohammad. Firstly let me sympathise, they are horrible. They are no doubt a mental issue but sometimes they can be cured or at least alleviated a little by physical means. Start with simple straight shots and do not worry about missing initially. Perform your preparatory waggles long, slow and with rhythm, pause on the back swing. Now we come to the most important part, we need to take one of the senses away that sends messages back to the brain, so close the eyes and then play the shot. Do this often enough and you will trick the brain into believing that the yips that you are encountering are not necessary and new brain patterns will emerge. Establishing a smooth unhurried cue action is part of the key, do this regularly in solo practise and it won't be long before you can do it with your eyes open.

Yeah I hear they suck Stephen Hendry suffers from the yips too and he says that’s why he doesn’t play professionally anymore

Hi Barry,i don't know if it's even possible but the only thing that let's me down is my temporamant and I was wondering if there's anyway of improving it?if I miss easy shots it bothers me to the point where I can't forget it and also I start sulking when I'm getting bad luck 😂

mark. Mental strength is important to play this game well and there are many books on the market that can help. One of the best that I have read is Sport Psychology by Stephen J Bull. ISBN No. 1 85223 568 3.
