Supertramp is a great English rock band formed in 1969. They had so many hit songs in the 70's-80's such as "Dreamer", "Give A Little Bit", "The Logical Song", "Breakfast In America", "Rudy", "Take The Long Way Home", "School", "It's Raining Again", "Bloody Well Right", "My Kind Of Lady", "Cannonball", "I'm Beggin' You", "You Win, I Lose" etc.

It's actually much deeper than a carefree romp through one-night-stands. It's a very poignant look at the life of a touring musician, going from town to town, meeting someone new and trying to justify it in his own mind. There's an obscure Pink Floyd song called Summer of 68, which explores this same subject matter, with that unique Floydian twist.

Supertramp were a progressive rock band formed in London in 1970. They had two vocalists (Rick Davies and the higher pitched Roger Hodgson). Along with the progressive sound, many of their songs had a sort of jazz infusion. It's a deep rabbit hole worth your time.

I see you mention"the incredible music" of Supertramp...you got that right in spades. These guys were top talents at the very top of their game. They walk shoulder to shoulder with Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles, Steely Dan, any band you choose, Supertramp is their equal in talent, song writing, production values, and technical ability. "School," "Bloody Well Right," "Dreamer," "Rudy," "Crime of the Century," "Child of Vision (live)"...actually, you can't really miss with pretty much any song from their 3rd album (Crime of the Century) and afterwards.

They actually hit the big time in the rest of the western world 3 albums before this but did not break in the states until Breakfast in America……… they are essentially a progressive rock band based around keys and woodwind and sax sounds and the two writers Rodger Hodgson and Rick Davies who wrote and performed lead vocals on their own songs within a group format. For the point where they really made people sit up and notice check out ‘School’ from the 1974 album Crime of the Century

Supertramp was my first favorite band when I was young in the late '70s. They had two lead singers, who each sang lead on their own songs and backup on the other's songs. This was a Rick Davies song; Roger Hodgson sang the falsetto chorus.

Supertramp is a tremendous band. Montreal, where I grew up, was Supertramp central. We couldn't get enough, and they kept coming back. Piano at the front gave them a unique sound for a full rock band. The Crime album hit like a ton of bricks, not a weak song on the album. Their albums rarely disappointed. They also put out some truly classic tracks such as The Logical Song, Even In the Quietest Moments and Fool's Overture (containing a piece of musical interlude you can't help but have heard, but didn't know where it originated)

Probably the simplest track from Supertramp - musically brilliant and diverse, they managed to be both 'progressive' and 'commercial' - not a marriage made in heaven really, as it was/is a contradiction in terms, but they were unique in the early 70's, because they managed to be both accessible and unpredictable. Try 'The Logical Song' and 'Breakfast in America' for a couple more of their hits. Great reaction btw ty
@fuchsiaswing8545 Жыл бұрын
By 1979, they had perfected a more Progressive Rock/Sophisti-Art Pop sound that was more commercially viable than their early stuff. As you said, it's not an easy gap to bridge, but few bands did it better than Supertramp.
