Both Paul (1957) and George (1958) joined The Quarrymen Then John, Paul, and George left The Quarrymen in 1960 to form The Beatles 1st with Pete Best on drums.....then being replaced by Ringo Starr. Ringo is awesome on drums, but I think Pete Best gotten screwed by The Beatles' manager, Brian Epstein.
@jnagarya519 Жыл бұрын
@@MrTech226 Pete Best was not a good drummer, AND he didn't "fit" with the other three. Ringo was the drummer in the #1 band in Liverpool when "The Beatles" were barely a band. They met and got to know him in Hamburg; that's why they knew who to call when Best was dumped. And according to John, it was the three who made the decision -- but Epstein who carried it out. So the responsibility belongs to all of them.

@@MrTech226 Pete got fired because he wasn't good enough in the studio -- a series of producers said he couldn't cut it, and George Martin said he wouldn't use Pete at all in the studio, but replace him with a session musician (though he didn't care if the Beatles kept Pete when they played on tour). The Beatles didn't want to play with a different line-up on stage than in the studio, so at George Harrison's urging (but with John and Paul's approval) fired Pete. Brian Epstein didn't particularly want to do it, but John Paul and George insisted that as the manager Brian had to do the dirty work. Brian offered Pete a place in another band, but Pete turned it down and joined Lee Curtis and the All Stars instead.

That chorus is just devastating... "Have a very merry Christmas, and a happy new year...". It could just do that on loop and still be a great song. John Lennon released this song during the Viet Nam War in 1971. In 1972, we started a scale down of the War. In 1973, American POWs were released by Viet name and we withdrew all our troops by 1975. The War finally ended after 10 years and 58,220 Soldiers dead, The War Had Finally Ended. The Vietnam anti-war movement was one of the most pervasive displays of opposition to the government policy in modern times. Protests raged all over the country. San Francisco, New York, Oakland, and Berkeley were all demonstration hubs, especially during the height of the war in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This song was a big hit in 71/72 (still is).

I can still remember in around 1969(?) as a 17 year-old seeing one of the giant billboards that appeared across London (as well as many other major capital cities across the world), in a huge publicity campaign John and Yoko launched to promote their anti-war message, of which this record was a part. The message in the billboard said simply: WAR IS OVER IF YOU WANT IT Merry Christmas from John and Yoko xx It's hard to explain in these cynical times the feeling and deeper meaning of the counterculture back then, but those of us that identified with it felt like one big interconnected world-wide family: rich or poor, famous or non-famous, all wanting and working in our own small and large ways towards making a better future for our world. John and Yoko, and all the Beatles in fact, as well as being hugely admired musicians, felt like family. Funnily enough, despite all the bad things still going on today, I still feel that optimism for the world. I just understand better that it takes a long time before everyone (or a critical mass of the world's population) feels able to risk making themselves vulnerable and uncover that place in their hearts that knows we are all one human family, sharing this beautiful planet, and that we must all be compassionate and responsible citizens and stewards if we're ever to realise our true potential. here on Earth. Once we all want peace more than we want conflict, War will indeed be Over. Happy New Year, Everyone!!

My favorite Christmas songs are O Holy Night, Silent Night both traditional and The Temptations' version, O Come All Ye Faithful (especially in the Latin, Adeste Fidelis), Little Drummer Boy by Vienna Boys Choir & also Johnny Cash's, and Hark the Herald. However, I also include in my favorites Happ Xmas (War Is Over) and Stevie Wonder's Someday At Christmas. Although both "sad" as they remind us of our humanity's ongoing failures to be selfless instead of selfish, they are beautiful songs necessary to remember the reason for the season, God's message for all of us to strive for peace, unity, and goodness. Powerful songs. In a similar context, if you know the Bob Hope Christmas specials, he would perform for troops stationed overseas; and he would always end the show with Silent Night. It is deeply powerful because of the interplay between the lyrics and the setting they are sung in. Strive for peace everyday. Start with yourself and those around you. It will spread. Let's all do better in 2024. I pray for justice in peace and the protection of the innocent in war.

They were called The Quarrymen because John and the original members of the band all went to Quarry Bank School in Liverpool which was a Grammar school. Paul and George went to another Grammar school called The Liverpool Institute. In those days of the 1950s you had to pass the 11+ exam to go to Grammar school which John, Paul and George did, but Ringo didn't take the 11+ exam, probably because he was very ill and in hospital a lot as a child. It was so often the other children nicknamed him "Lazarus" after the Saint who rose from the dead. The 11+ exam was discontinued in 2008 although it ceased to be as widespread after 1970 as the government of the day scrapped most grammar schools and brought in Comprehensive schools in the UK.

The Vietnam War took place within the context of the Cold War and the threat of nuclear war, which people were more concerned about back then. The idea that any war could turn into complete destruction of Earth was fueling the peace movement. Paul did his own version a few years later, "Pipes of Peace." Sting did "Russians" a few years later, and that same year Siouxsie and the Banshees released "Cities in Dust" ... which is technically about something else, but the comparison is obvious. There's probably a few more songs that would be considered inspired by the Cold War situation. IMO, John's song is the best of them all, despite being very simple, and specifically tied to Christmas. However, the others deserve a listen for those interested. As for a "quarry man" ... they "dig rock" ... get it?

War is bad for ALL people, not only to a "counterculture". In the 1960s it was the so-called "counterculture" that lead the opposition to US involvement in Vietnam. But that wasn't only the young: a prominent opponent was pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock, who'd been politically active since the 1950s, when it was discovered that plutonium was in mother's milk. He was also a defendant in the "Boston Five" case, the charge (subsequently acquitted) being "Conspiracy to Encourage Draft Resistance". Spock was also accused by the right-wing Republican war-mongers of being responsible for the campus protests and "riots," based on his book _Baby and Child Care_ -- which had been the "bible" for parents since the 1940s -- because in it he opposed childhood spankings. Another of the "Boston Five" was Mitchell Goodman, husband of poetess Denise Levertov; they were young during WW II. Another the father of Congressman Jamie Raskin. Another prominent opponent (not of the '"Boston Five") was Norman Mailer, who was in the army during WW II -- _The Naked and the Dead_ was his first, and bestselling, novel.
