An old buddy of mine married a Chilean and he was telling me a similar story about the use of the word "back" and all the various meanings that his wife was butchering. Every phrase has a different meaning depending on which preposition is used. Back off, back up, back in, out back, call back, back into, on the back of, the back of the _____, etc., etc.

The English language is said to be one of the hardest languages to learn because of all the slang we incorporate
@eva1892
@eva1892 Жыл бұрын
Well, actually it's the easiest, and I'm Finnish. And it's not about the slang, we have slang and different dialects in Finland too. Actually, sometimes it's easier to understand English slang than Finnish dialect in some other part of the country you're from. But it's probably because we don't dub movies, series, or shows. We are used to hearing English from a young age. When I was a kid, we started learning English in schools when we were 10yrs. old. Now, my child started school this autumn, they have English immediately. Germanic languages, in general, are easy for me and probably most Finnish people. It's funny that we Finns live next to Russia, and Russian language is a whole different world with different alphabets and everything.
@volundrfrey896
@volundrfrey896 Жыл бұрын
That's complete bullshit though. The average American doesn't use more slang than a average German for example, sure if you add American, British, Australian, New Zealand, South African etc. slang together it's a lot, but native speakers don't know all that either... and in that case you could say the same languages like Spanish.
@CaddyJim
@CaddyJim Жыл бұрын
@@eva1892 I only speak English in a little bit of Spanish so I'm just going off in English teachers comment I said it was one of the hardest to learn because of slang & double meanings but if you guys are multilingual and learn English as a second or third language then you would know better
@eva1892
@eva1892 Жыл бұрын
@@CaddyJim Yes, ofcourse it depends what language/ languages you are used to hear from a young age and what languages you study in school. But in general, propably every language has words with double meanings and local slangs. I don't find English language any different in that sense.
