The car Lia drove up Pikes Peak was the Porsche SVRSR “Hoonipigasus”. It was the car that Ken wanted to do the Pikes Peak race in but was never able to. She did an exhibition run during the race that was untimed. There is a video on the whole process of her running it. She did drive the Mustang during the second season of “Hoonicorn vs the World”. She definitely did not drive it carefully though . I think she only lost once and that was to a GTR when she broke a driveshaft. She hit 176 mph in one of the races which was faster than Ken ever had the car. They talk about it in one of the videos where she races it.

Ken Block was so special and it was such a shame to see him go way to early. Pikes Peak truly is a special place with a lot of racing history, the elevation climbs up so much, cars lose a couple hundred horsepower by the time they reach the top because the air gets remarkably thinner.

Thank you so much for covering this legend. He was my hero. Here to lend some info :) 6:51 Hoonigan Media Machine was at its peak (no pun intended) when this was filmed. The very talented Brian Scotto helped put the team together that shot these amazing short films, he handled the legal and executive aspect of all of these projects. Ken Block was the creative vision and the raw talent/precision behind the wheel, as well as the optics final word. Ken knew how to make everything look amazing. He was a marketing genius. Gymkhana films were done using windows of time with shut down streets, professional courses, and all closed off routes. Many many takes for each moment sometimes, Ken would Do a single corner as many times as needed to get “the shot”, usually going harder and more aggressive each time until it was intense enough. Ken started not only DC Shoes but Hoonigan as well as other ventures, he was a professional rally driver from age 35-55 I believe. He is truly missed
@ianjonassen724417 күн бұрын
The spot he got close to the edge backwards with no guardrail is called Evo Corner due to a Mitsubishi Evo missing the turn in 2012 the driver was fine afterwards. Ken Block and the Director Brian Scotto decided on two takes due to Ken hitting the stone marker on the second take with the rear bumper.

If I'm not mistaken, this video was shot over the course of like 3 days with god knows how many tire replacements haha But it definitely feels more fun to think it was in 1 take. In a few of the shots, you can see the tread marks on the pavement from previous takes that needed to be re-done because it didn't "look cool enough" haha
@MrAdolfolagos16 күн бұрын
yes... he was a performer, a showman. Took several takes and days to make a video. He had 20+ Us National rally competitions. He couldn't make it to WRC. Although pretty good stunts, there's nothing a movie car stunt doesn't do in a controlled area.
@SteveHarrellRally12 күн бұрын
Some of the retakes were also to move camera angles. If you watch his videos and focus on the camera angles you'll see there's a lot of times where if it were all in one take one of the cameras would be in the other camera's shot. Ken hated having crew (or really, people in general if they weren't part of the story) in the shot, so they'd do multiple takes so they'd have multiple angles with "clean" backgrounds. IMO it's impressive that, when stitched together, the multiple takes were similar enough that they can look like a single take of the stunt.

There's some awesome "making of" videos talking about the production and how they managed to do this, and there's an old episode on Hoonigan that breaks down the Hoonicorn mechanically and talks about the engineering that went into it. Also highly recommend the other Gymkhana videos for sure. The road they are driving hosts a yearly hillclimb race, and it's got a TON of history behind it if you wanna scope out a video diving into the race and how it's changed over the decades. There's a KZbinr named Rob Dahm who is famous for building a Mazda RX-7 in a very similar way, down to measuring pixels in images and videos of the Hoonicorn in order to create his own AWD monster, but his is powered by 4 Mazda rotary engines pretty much just stitched together into a custom 4-Rotor making over 1000 horsepower and positively delightful sounds. There's an episode of Hoonigan 'This Vs. That' when Ken was still alive where Rob got a chance to race his custom contraption against the Hoonicorn as well as geek out over the engineering of both builds, a fun and heartfelt video.

The Pikes Peak Race to the Clouds has been an annual event since 1916. The first race where the road was paved to the summit was in 2012, prior to that it was dirt in sections as the city of Colorado Springs worked on paving it. They didn't start paving until 2002, until then it was only paved to mile marker 7 where the race starts from. The average grade is over 7%, which is pretty dang steep for a race with few guard rails. The current record is just under 8 minutes in a Volkswagen I.D. R, an all electric vehicle.

Love seeing people discover Ken. He was a great driver and, beyond that, a great and genuine guy. Everyone I know who worked with him or spent time with him misses him, the news hit hard. One of those "never forget where you were" kind of days. Still hear that signature laugh in my head sometimes... Honestly aside from that one slide on the edge of the cliff, I've always considered this one of his tamer videos. Gymkana 5 in San Francisco and 7 in LA are the most impressive in my book. 5 for the driving, 7 for the car. Alternately, you can go back and watch the first video, "Ken Block Gymkhana Practice." That single five minute video effectively launched his entire career, and changed motorsports/motorsports promotion as a whole. Side note, you should check out a rally in person this year. There are 24 rallies across the US this season, fair odds there's at least one in your region

The Pikes Peak Hill climb is a legendary race up Pikes Peak running annually since 1916. I've been to three races. First time I was four. My father was a mechanic for one of the teams. The last time for me was 1993. We camped by that first turn after helicopter lift off. That location is called Devils Playground. Was dirt road back then as well. 85 mph winds and snow that night. Race day perfect weather. You can find footage of old races on KZbin.

Trust me, as gnarly as the upper half of Pike's Peak looks on video you can't truly appreciate just how serious that road is until you're actually driving it. First time I drove to the top of Pike's Peak (in a WRX no less) was the ONLY time I've ever been frightened in a car I was driving. Onto 8:22, there Ken was paying hommage to the great Ari Vatanen on his iconic moment racing up Pike's Peak on the 405 T16, when he just winged it with one hand going full blast while covering his eyes from the sun with the other. Ken always had these productions filles with creativity and nods to motorsport history, he's sorely missed in the community.

I live in Park City near the Blocks and am heavily into back country snowmobiling as well and I still can’t believe he’s competed in a big handful of the most dangerous Motorsports racing in the world for so long and lost his life in such a relatively very safe sport /hobby near his home just for fun. The amazing amounts of snow we get make it so safe , when you wreck or fall off or even have your sled roll over ya, yoire in 20 feet of the softest powder . When someone’s killed it’s virtually always by avalanche . I still don’t understand how he was so badly injured that he was killed instantly. utah still mourns his loss , park city especially as he was a staple her and we mourn for his amazing Family but like Ken, his wife Lucy and Lee at daughter Leah dove head first into multiple different types of racing and Leah’s natural ability as a teenager is absolutely unreal! She competes in Global Rally Car racing, she did Piles Peak hill climb racing Ken’s Porsche built for that race that he sadly didn’t get to do but Leah did and shocked everyone that saw it! She’s now in Formula 2 and a the very best racing program and pedigree/training anyone could get and she’s excelling , she competed in the Goodwwood Hill climb this year performing amazing in a historic Formula 1 car she’d never drove , she’s competing in the new all electric global off-road series as well. Lucy has dove into running the globally famous Hoonigan Motorsports company Ken built and the year before Ken passed to many peoples suprise, he asked Travis Pastrana if he would do that years gymkhana and to make it his own and did so amazingly that Ken said Travis is the one person that could carry the torch on and passed not long after.
