Richard, along with George Carlin and Lenny Bruce helped switch comedy from "gag humor" and one liners to "life humor" where they analyze things in their (our) lives and make us laugh.

Lenny was an interesting one. His influence in the comedy world was more about being a shock comedian in a time when that was not really a thing and consequently, he had to actually fight for his right to say shocking things and challenge the cultural norms. He was sued repeatedly for the things he said on stage and not only did that result in changing the comedy landscape, but really the American landscape in general because he had to fight for his right of free speech. He really kicked down the door for being able to say things that are not considered "acceptable". Without him, comdians like Pryor, Eddie Murphy, and/or Bill Hicks would have never been able to say the things they said on stage.

George Carlin, Robin Williams and many others came up directly under Richard Pryor. Richard highlighted their talents on his short lived (too racy for the ‘70’s) network TV show. You GOTTA do the classic southern courtroom trial with Robin Williams as counsel for the defense!

I worked with a guy for a long time, and we became good friends. I had worked with him for a decade before he told me that the rest of his family in New York was "Family". When his family came over from Sicily, his father decided he didn't want to go into the 'family business' with his brothers. So he made his peace with them, changed his last name, and eventually moved away from New York. When my buddy told me his father's original family name, I immediately recognized it; I'd heard it throughout my youth, growing up further down the Eastern Seaboard. It was one of 'those' names. 🤐But by then I'd gotten to know him as a good guy, and I'm really glad he and his father were cut from a different cloth than the rest of his family. To understand why people like Richard Prior and George Carlin and a few others are considered the OGs of comedy, you'd have to look at the other joke-tellers of their time. These guys stood out. If they don't seem so unusual these days, it's because many other comedians followed their lead.

Richard Pryor's red suit show is iconic, and one reason that Eddie Murphy wore a red leather suit for his 1983 stand-up show, 'Delirious'. That was his big break, he was a huge star after that show. He loved Richard Pryor, as all stand-ups did/do. They became good friends.

He wrote Mongo's parts. The studio couldn't get insurance on Richard because he was high and drunk all the time. He was also offered the roll of Lamont on Sanford and Son, but he turned it down because he had movie projects, and he told the studio to give it to Red Foxx and have him play the father. S&S was one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, but could you imagine if he played Lamont?

From the late 70s to the early 80s Richard Pryor was an A-List superstar. At a time when many black talent struggled to find work, Pryor's movies with Gene Wilder in particular were blockbusters. You knew Pryor was hot when he was cast as Christopher Reeves' co-star in Superman III.

I first saw Richard Pryor on the Ed Sullivan show when I was a child. He did the Rumpelstiltskin routinte, and my dad literally fell out of his chair laughing. My dad remained a fan, even though he never saw any of Pryor's edgy routines (because those were not on regular TV), only his more tame routines and his movies. My dad was a conservative midwestern military man --- and he thought Pryor was one of the best comics around. My dad was right.
