Beautiful song! John Denver was a gifted singer songwriter & actor. He had so many great hits in the 70's-80's. Some of his signature songs were "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Grandma's Feather Bed", "Fly Away", "Leaving On A Jet Plane", "Poems, Prayers & Promises", "Annie's Song", "Calypso", "Sunshine On My Shoulders" etc. John appeared in several films & television specials during the 70's-80's, including the 1977 hit "Oh, God!", in which he starred alongside George Burns.

This was not about drugs. Its a story of a young man who is swept up in the awesomeness of nature n the wonder of how God and nature fits in this too fast paced world. John was so refreshingly different. Most all his songs were peace inducing. My fave is GOODBYE AGAIN. Its like he is trying to figure out how his music side conflicts with his home life. Poems, prayers n promises, This old guitar, country roads, The EAGLE N the HAWK IS AMAZING!! SO MANY GREAT HITS AND A HANDFUL OF DUETS WITH MAMA CASS ELLIOT N OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN. Annie's song, sunshine on my shoulders. A rabbit hole of huge hits. Taken from us way to soon. R.I.P. John!!!

@@stevensnyder1133 The song is inspired by that, but not directly about that. That line could be about any form of building in the mountains. Rocky Mountain High is about one man's journey into spiritual discovery. It's not about a group of people trying to move the Olympics. I'm curious if you know specifics on the line "He lost a friend, but kept a memory." Is that about a friend of his dying while mountain climbing. Did he cause that man's death when "he went crazy once and tried to touch the sun." I found this on Reddit. " I've always heard that line was a reference to a friend of his that was visiting from Minnesota and was killed in an accident while riding Johns motorcycle.

John Denver was always an environmentalist. Back in the day, there was a show on every week about a marine biologist/researcher named Jacques Cousteau that opened our eyes to the wonders of the seas. I think it was called "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau". Cousteau's research vessel was called "Calypso" and John Denver wrote a song about it, not surprisingly called, "Calypso". It would be a great reaction song. It's kind of a seafaring ditty if you will.

I would only correct that I believe The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau actually not a weekly show but rather specials that came on every few months as I recall. My older brother's guitar was always in the living room and we had music books including a John Denver book so I learned the song using the chord diagrams. Now, 50 years later, I still play some JD including with a duet partner I've had for 33 years. We play, "Goodbye Again", "This Old Guitar" and John's version of a cover he did called, "Today". His catalog is substantial, so these are good starting songs. I like “Matthew”. It is another personal story song for him. And knowing the truth of his words in it, add “Toledo” to your list. His music and spirit were the sound and start of a post-Vietnam social movement for many Americans coming to terms with what they had just experienced. A similar movement will arise in the US in the next 5-10 years, so it will be exciting to see who will pick up his baton and carry it forward. He was an amazing songwriter, as well as an accomplished guitarist, playing both six-string and twelve-string guitars. His vocals were naturally higher pitched, with a strong voice. I saw him do a show in the Cow Palace arena near San Francisco years ago. He stayed, playing and singing for over 1 ½ hours without stopping for a break. His backing instrumentalists came and went, but he never left. He wrote “Annie’s Song,” a love song for his (later to be ex) wife Annie. It is one of his classics. After his death Annie was asked which was her favorite John Denver song. She said that people would probably think it would be “Annie’s Song,” but said that her real favorite was “Perhaps Love,” which was recorded as a duet with opera tenor Placido Domingo. If you want to feel your heart ripped out by beauty and emotion, just listen to one of my personal favorites… “Seasons of the Heart.”

I love John Denver. Sings about real things feel good songs. The getting high around the campfire was being high on life family friends or high altitude and lack of oxygen. I've been to Colorado and I get used to it. I loved the song Mathew.

I had a chance to hear him live at an outdoor park. He did a free concert for donations. He gave his time and devotion to supporting wildlife and parks and natural wildepark. And raising awareness of preserving nature. He made beautiful music. If you can find it look for old footage of him and his film crew up in the mountains and him with his guitar running down a hill side with a bear running after him. The song is "How to you say hello to a Grizzly bear". Also, he did Christmas Specials with the muppets for television. Great stuff. He was an avid outdoorsman and friend of wildlife. His music is very family oriented and warm and inviting. I miss his presence. I was also fortunate to see another good soul Robin Williams perform in our city maybe 18 months before he died. It was a special time for myself and my husband. Great memories. ❤

I love John Denver. An American friend took me on a road trip into Colorado last year, and as we crossed the state border we put this track on and sang along. So good! 🙂

You will never regret listening to John Denver. I have a wonderful 3-disc album of his greatest hits. Country Roads is my favorite, but I love them all!
