Several years ago two women who didn't know each other - one younger - one older - got on an high rise elevator in NYC together. Hearing the music on the elevator The younger woman said to the older - this is such a lovely song - do you know the name of it? Yes - it's called "Annie's Song" - John Denver wrote it for me when we were married back in the 70's.

John had the ability to take you on a journey to the highest of heights, to pinnacles of feeling, and then bring you back to earth so gently that you don't even realize you've come down. The way he created moods that lingered long after the song ended.... amazing and never to be achieved again.

As good of a singer and the songwriter as he was John Denver was also an absolutely amazing guitarist. Just wanted to throw that out there. His songs are not easy to learn or play on the guitar, but they are absolutely beautiful. Sometimes it felt like so many of his chords were augmented or adding an extra note to it, but every single one of them was exactly what the song needed. He really was a master at his craft.

“It was written after John and I had gone through a pretty intense time together and things were pretty good for us,” Martell once explained. “He left to go skiing and he got on the Ajax chair on Aspen mountain and the song just came to him. He skied down and came home and wrote it down…Initially it was a love song and it was given to me through him, and yet for him it became a bit like a prayer.”
