Went to the Warwick, RI location back in August - I've been a Pepe's fan for nearly 25 years, but the Warwick Pepe's (particularly the crust) tastes nothing like "Pepe's" now. A friend of mine had warned me prior to going (I was back east to visit family) and said it was bad now, but I said it's Pepe's, how can it be bad.....she was right. It was disappointing since moving out west, I don't have access to Pepe's like I did years ago.

As someone who lives in Florida, that pizza looks better than 99% of the pizza in Florida. There's one place near me called wood fired pizza wine bar in Tampa that's an 8.1 on the app, but apart from that place (always crispy and burnt, plus they work odd hours), this place would be second choice. Execution may have been off, but as long as the recipe/ingredients are the same, I'd imagine it's naturally better than the standard Florida Flop you get everywhere else. NY Flop beats a Florida Flop 8 days of the week.

I get samosas from the grocery store and they stay hot and crisp all day cause they sit in a heated area and the container has steam holes where the center piece is punched out but stays and is lifted slightly. there's like 8 of them around the top. they need to implement this idea into pizza boxes

Cutting it at home helps. Thats a pro tip for ya lol. Keeps any grease on top and helps keep the bottom crispier. Still isnt the same as eating there tho but it helps. Lol

Frank Pepe’s. Despite the lifeIess slice/pizza you had here I gotta give them props for something they are trying to do correctly. I grew up on Regina’s in Boston’s North End. Still my favorite. I did try Frank Pepe’s in both The Shoppes @ Chestnut Hill & Burlington Mall. They constructed the same 14’ long brick oven as they have in New Haven. My beloved Regina’s had lower temp Blodgette pizza ovens at their other locations and NOT the gas fired brick oven they have on Thatcher Street in North End. The owner of New Haven was on the floor @ Chestnut Hill and was monitoring the line when we were there. They weren’t cutting cost with the process.

As someone who started out In Connecticut for my 2+ decades raised on New Haven Apizza it does not surprise me with these lower scores. I live in Massachusetts now and I have been to three of there MA locations and New Haven just can’t be replicated. Same difference with Pizzeria Regina in the North End. For some reason the originals can never be equaled. So take a road trip like Dave and many others to New Haven for the best pizza in the world (Sally’s) and go to Libby’s for some Italian Ice or Cannoli. My childhood memories guarantee you will be in heaven!!!😋👍

Frank Pepe was built on the tomato pie. Mozzarella wasn’t added until later. I’ve been to both Pepe restaurants in New Haven, the one in Mohegan sun casino and Warwick RI. None cook it as well done as New Haven. Most people don’t like the “burnt”. It’s a shame because that’s what makes New Haven what it is.

This type of pie HAS to be served hot n fresh right out of the coal fired oven. The Warwick RI Pepe’s location is the most consistent I’ve come across outside of New Haven. I’ve been to the Manchester CT location dozens of times and it’s hit or miss. Once they had to remake the pie THREE times while I waited because they admitted as soon as it came out of the oven it wasn’t up to standard. Side note the Foxom Park soda they serve is top notch

Totally agree with you Dave. I went there on the second day they were open. Ordered a tomato pie & the fall special. Complete disappointment on both pizzas. When I heard you say 7.2, that was the score I said, " He's going to give it a 7.2!" The fall special had no tomato sauce! They definitely cannot hold a candle to the original in New Haven. Somebody needs to get on the issues & fix them before they lock the doors & are gone forever. The shopping center they opened up in has been doomed for the longest time. Everything they have built there over the last 30 years has failed. The place is at 1/5 capacity now & they are struggling for businesses to move in there.

I’m from CT. Pepe’s in Mohegan Sun is pretty close to New Haven. Pizza is always great there. We were just at the Plantation, FL Pepe’s last week. I can tell you we ate inside and it was very good. Not floppy at all like that mess. It’s not CT but it’s close.

You can tell by the crust on that pizza that it was NEVER TURNED IN THE OVEN. The right side has some doneness crisp, but the left side doesn't. Having said that, if you let a pizza sit in a box while you collect accolades from Fan Boi's in the crowd, so that you end up with a Flopperino ... that's on YOU bro. You should order a fresh pie and judge it on its merits. Unfair review. You gotta go back and do this one again. That's just unfair.

Pepes is my favorite pizza place and love it more than other places. I've been to the location in my state of Rhode Island in Warwick, the Mohegan sun location and of course made a trip to New Haven, Connecticut to eat at the original location four years ago. The pizza is better at the original location and the big reason for that is cause it's cooked on their really old brick oven they still use since they opened in 1925, that makes a difference. My rating of their pizza is higher than the rating you gave out four years ago. For me it's a 10/10. That sucks you had a bad experience at the Florida location. That's unlike them. I never had one bad experience with Pepes pizza. For me they never disappoint and their consistent with it I know the one in Florida just opened and maybe they have kinks t9 work through.

I have a Frank Pepe’s by me in Alexandria, VA. It is absolutely amazing! I’ve eaten in this one in Plantation, FL. It was an embarrassment to the good name of Frank Pepe’s. Not only was it not up to Frank Pepe’s standards, but it wasn’t even up to average pizza standards!

Prez, i can you from experience that the wait had nothing to do with the floppiness. I’ve been to this location 5x and have never had it to go, and it’s always been floppy. No crisp ever. When i heard we were getting a Frank Pepe’s i made it a priority to get there day 1 because i know it’s one of your top pies. I was shocked when i tried it during the soft opening… the pizza was thick, soft, and greasy. I had it again for the grand opening, same thing. 3 more times and all the same deal - too thick, no crisp, and not great. I’m glad to hear that you agree… i was concerned that New Haven style was actually not good based off this location.

I'll be honest my man. Lived in Florida my whole life. Wish you gave this location another opportunity to redeem themselves. This spot has THE BEST TOMATOE PIE that I have ever had at any spot in Florida. The problem is. You got the tomatoe pie with the mozzarella on it. You have to ask for "THE ORIGINAL TOMATOE PIE WELL DONE" the one without the mozzarella. And get it fresh. I guarantee you. You will change this rating. Hands down. Always spot on EVERY SINGLE time I ordered it that way.

Reminds me of when McDonalds was first starting to franchise in the movie the founder and the other places gave McDonalds a bad name. This is the start of the end of their reputation if you’re anywhere outside of New Haven

Since Pepe's franchised, and Sally's family sold them to corporate amerika neither are the same. Quarantine made their quality worse that it never bounced back from. Modern is still soupy. I go to Mangia Apizza in North Haven which is the closest to old Sallys as the owner worked there more than a decade, and Friscos Pizza in New Haven is a hidden gem!

The Consiglio family still manages Sally's even if they sold the business itself it's still very good, Dave gave them the 9.2 after they were sold too, modern is solid, and the original spot for Frank Pepe's is still good. Modern's pizza is good but has its days where it's not as up to snuff, with the heavyweights.

Your a thousand miles away from New Haven. I doubt that majority of this customer base will ever visit any other Pepe location. Glad Dave put them in their place. Just corporate has some work to do to raise up standards.

They opened a Frank Pepe in Burlington Mass too a few years ago before Rona hit. I didn't try it though so no idea if it's any good.

If the OG Frank Pepe is the most important pizza in the country, I am surprised it did not get higher than 8.5.
