Here's a little Springfield, MA inside story for you from someone who grew up outside the city and has family there. MGM came in and wanted to build their casino around 10 years (or more?) ago. Red Rose is directly across the street from where they were going to build, so the company offered to buy out the whole block where Red Rose is located. Every single business sold EXCEPT for Red Rose. Not only did they not sell out to the corporate man, they EXPANDED their business into another storefront the family owned. They saw the big picture, and are an example to family owned business everywhere. If you can, stick around and expand when "Wal-Mart" comes to town. Every city / town looks exactly the same in this country, with chain restaurants etc etc. The Red Rose is an example of a family that didn't take the money and had the confidence in themselves and their workers to build something bigger and even more special. My family celebrated my grandfather's 100th Bday there last summer and it's one of the best memories we'll ever have. Support local businesses!

That is my kind of place. The owner said her PARENTS were from Naples. She is first generation and the class she has shows in the place. The daughters work there and hopefully it will carry on for many years. I plan on taking on son there next time we visit the HOF. Salute!!

I grew up in West Springfield and we went to red Rose or Canta Napolis across the bridge. Best style pizza ever. My wife is from North Haven and raves about Sallie’s and Pepe’s but once she tasted Pioneer Valley styled pizza, she was hooked! 👍🏼😎

Undercarriage is incredibly impressive considering the dough. You can tell the people who cooked it know what they're doing. They should offer traditional triangle slice, though. That's definitely a pie you save for a week or two. Looks good to me. Surprised Dave only went 7.9 (dinged for the square slices). That looks like an 8.2 to me.

I live in the area and Red Rose is legit. I grew up in CT and was use to thin New Haven style, but this is definitely unique. I’m not sure what is about all of the pizza places in this area, but you have to request pie cut- if you don’t they all cut them square. Either way- great to see Dave visit Springfield. Western Mass doesn’t get much love!

Naugatuck Valley in CT used to have a similar style - The Berkshire in Torrington, Ro's in Watertown, Bacci's in Waterbury, and a bunch more. Cut in triangle slices though.

Two things that struck me on top of the quality of the pizza: 1 - Anyone else notice that front door, and now it's a nice ornate wooden door, and not some cheap, mass produced metal and glass door that every place has? That's the kind of thing you have to order custom from a craftsman, and it shows a high degree of dedication. 2 - Obviously when Portnoy comes to your place, it creates a stir, but the people there knew to only pop out for a second, see what's going on, then just as quick pop back in so that Portnoy doesn't feel uncomfortable or pressured. That's class.

Second to that, I poop in their toilet and look and see everything from that point of view. Then I clean everything really well with my fresh poop.

I am from Springfield and I grew up on this pizza. One thing about Red Rose pizza is that their (very large) Party-size pizza tastes and feels just as well cooked and crispy as (what the Red Rose calls) a small pizza.

Springfield MA born and raised. The ONLY thing I miss about Springfield is being able to get decent pizza almost anywhere in the city. In Texas it's not like that. A lot of places serve pizza that's just a step above Dominoes. Only a handful of places in San Antonio make a decent pie for a reasonable price.

Remember having pizza there visiting the Basketball Hall of Fame. Pizza is just as delicious today as when it was just a tiny restaurant. Family pride has kept it first class. Daughters are wonderful people as is the whole family. Father, Nicola, was a great guy. And yes, kitchen has always been spotless. Hope to have a pizza there later this summer. New Haven has Frank Pepe’s but Springfield will always have THE RED ROSE.

Dave I apologize this rant is going to be a long one.... I've lived in western Mass my entire life, long story short Red Rose is an institution here. It's by far the best pizza and salad I've ever had in my entire life. It's widely regarded as the biggest and best pizza joint in Western Mass. It's the gold standard of which we all compare every Pizza too! I've had pizza all over our country. Dave kept getting confused at what style it was. It's red rose style/western Mass style. The only way I can describe it is, it's like it's a Neapolitan hand tossed pie. Basically around the edges you're getting the thick crunchy deep dish vibes, but towards the middle it gets very thin charred undercarriage like a New York Neapolitan. The huge party size is cut it in Detroit style squares. You're basically getting the best of ALL WORLDS! Fun fact: when MGM built their new casino in downtown Springfield, MGM offered the city and the owners of red rose millions of dollars to retire/ relocate. (They probably wanted to put a parking lot there) Our entire city absolutely rejected that idea and stood firm. That's how important that place is to us.

I grew up in Springfield MA. I would go to Red Rose all the time with family. It was the favorite pizza place for all of us. I moved away living in states down south and always looking for a place like Red Rose to satisfy my pizza needs but can never find it. I will travel back just for Red Rose Pizza.

Massachusetts pizza is basically inedible, having lived in Boston right near the North End for a few years. Coming from NJ, and having tried literally every place in Boston/Cambridge/etc., the best slice was Pinnochio's and I'd give it a Jersey 7.1 being generous. Regina's, that Dave I think gave in the 9's... literally was the ONLY pizza I've ever thrown out in my life. Two bites and threw out a pie. Tried the place 3 more times and literally never ate more than a slice. Its truly garbage up there, the bread taste like cardboard and the sauce is straight from a can no basil, nothing. That's why Dave has a handicapped palette and is actually terrible at scoring pizza (still doesn't know what a Neapolitan fucking is lmfao).. he grew up in Boston. You can't come back from that, even thousands of days into eating pies from NY/NJ area.

This style is prevalent around the Western Mass Connecticut River Valley (91 corridor). I implore you to try some other places in the area. Family Pizza in South Hadley, Roma Restaurant in Southwick, Amedeo’s and Capri in Holyoke. All are similar styles.

Props to the owners for keeping it running smooth with a good pie to boot That does look like a pizza Napoletana that started putting on some weight in the midsection lol I wouldn't mind trying, I like napoletane but they can get a bit too thin and floppy for my taste, and hunger

Probably like Matt Stonie, he eats like this in sessions but then doesn't eat that much in between eating sessions. So he probably doesn't actually eat pizza every day, maybe once a week on average but it's mostly clustered. Also he probably shares it with the cameraman.

There’s a place in Caldwell, NJ called Tony D’s. Haven’t had it in years (moved away) but from what I remember it was really good thin, party style pizza. Big square/rectangle pies cut into squares, the most remarkable thing about it was how well it would reheat. To this day I don’t think I’ve ever had leftover pizza reheat as well as that one. It was almost better than having it fresh.

This thick-but-crisp style is (AFAIK) unique to the older Italian family restaurant spots in the "Pioneer Valley" (Western Mass, southern VT, maybe some north of Hartford). It's what I grew up on; I have so many memories of watching football or movies while eating pizza like this, and then saving the crust for last: the move is to scoop out the soft bread from the crust roll, and then dip the crunchy shell in a dish of marinara as you go along!
