Our first journey on BART's brand-new Fleet of the Future is here. In the longest documented ride on the new train since its inaugural run on Friday, January 19, 2017, experience the first full-length journey on BART's long-awaited new train cars, from MacArthur to Union City.
The train you see in this journey was the first Fleet-of-the-Future construct to run on the entire BART system. It took some effort, but we eventually tracked it down to broadcast it to the rest of the community. It is now joined by a few other new train sets that operate on different lines in the system.
Passing by the Hayward Maintenance Complex, we see multiple new train cars waiting to enter revenue service in the future, pointing to a time where BART's Fleet of the Future train cars will become a staple of the Bay Area. This video is only the beginning, and as more Fleet of the Future trains are introduced across the BART system, we will capture as much footage as is necessary to document its fast-moving incorporation into the DNA of Bay Area Rapid Transit.
Filmed on Tuesday, January 30, 2018.

Quick apologies for the sub-par audio quality in the video. After a few years of abuse to the camera's mic in the form of filming on many ear-piercing BART rides, it finally gave out. Have no fear, however; a new camera with a new mic is coming soon.
More about the Fleet of the Future:
The Fleet of the Future is manufactured by Bombardier in Plattsburgh, New York. The first car was delivered to BART's Hayward Maintenance Complex in April 2016; since then, one train is in revenue service, and over a dozen are undergoing testing across the BART system. More cars will be delivered every month.
Over the course of the next five years, a grand total of 775 new train cars will enter service throughout the BART system, heavily outnumbering the current fleet of 669 cars. By 2022, all cars will be delivered.
The Fleet of the Future is:
Cooler - Air conditioning flows from the ceiling of each car, rather than from the windows.
Quieter: Micro-plug doors seal out noise from the outside environment.
Comfortable: The new padded seats are easy to clean and come with lumbar support.
More accessible: With automated announcements, electronic screens that show where you are in the BART system, screens flashing the next/current stop, and plenty of wheelchair space, the Fleet of the Future is miles more accessible compared to the old train cars.
Each car now has three doors on each side, compared to the two doors on the old fleet, which provides for easier boarding/exiting of the train during peak rush hours.
Each train car is equipped with wheelchair space, bright green senior/disabled seats, and three bike slots to place your bike on.
The Fleet of the Future is ready to transport hundreds of millions of riders for the next 40 years. And as more cars enter revenue service across the BART system, they will surely become a symbol of the San Francisco Bay Area for years to come.

Fun fact: The original cars were designed by aircraft designers, which legitimately explains why they’re so damn loud, especially in the tunnels.

I know im late but the new cars are also designed by an aircraft company, bombardier, which makes private jets and other aircraft, notable example the A220

When BART first opened everything was quiet. Fast forward 50 years later it's loud because lack of proper maintenance. The rails themselves are in bad shape which account for the loud noise. I used to take BART from Dublin to S.F. but stopped doing that due to excessive noise. I haven't tried the new BART trains yet so hopefully it's not too bad.

Thanks for the video. Missed seeing these trains by about a month or so since my visit to SF. At least I got to experience the Rohr stock before they get replaced entirely. :)

Yeah, it's going to be sad to see those cars go, even in their dirty, grimy state. At least when that happens we'll have plenty of footage to remember them by.

I think everyone on BART will agree that while those cars were in dire need of replacement, they are memories. They were the identity of the system, and I’m not sure that the new trains will ever live up to the identity of the system.

Do we have to miss them? All they did was screech and shriek in the Transbay Tube. At one point, I sat in the first car on one of these trains in the Transbay Tube. It was loud as hell, and as we approached Embarcadero, the train's honked its death horn and rattled my already rattling eardrums. Bring on the Fleet Of The Future, and kill the Rohr's!

I've ridden in these new trains. Yes they are quieter and easy to clean. More in line to what other subway trains look like from around the world. The only thing that the old cars has was roomy space. These seats are not designed to fall asleep in. The seats are smaller, upright and hard plastic. I think some will miss that spacious comfort. Oh and the air con is much better on these.

Does this train have CBTC on it? It stands for Communication Based Train Control.
@BayAreaTransitNews
@BayAreaTransitNews 6 жыл бұрын
No, at least not yet. BART has yet to modernize their existing train control system, but when that does happen the system will most likely have CBTC throughout.

with the train walls bent inwards, you effectively lower the capacity of the train. why having a wide loading gauge then
@middletransport
@middletransport 5 жыл бұрын
Also the train walls are not bent inwards, but rather outwards, providing more space than flat walls.

well first off, sounds like its NOT the operators job to announce Stations anymore....LOL, Yep, one thing that the operator doesn't have to do anymore and with the older trains, they only had that beeping signal when the doors were about to close. Cant tell if these New trains are as noisy as the older trains were, espicially going through tunnels.....

The new train is very nice overall, butI still can’t believe only a complete 10-car train could make it into revenue service. Based on what I heard from the news, Bombardier, the train car manufacturer, has fallen WAY behind schedule, in terms of building the new cars and I find that to be very disappointing. As a result of that, the Bay Area community can only ride a complete train when there were supposed to be maybe a few hundred cars in service. That being said, BART is really struggling to obtain the total number of cars on the order by the expected year when all the new cars should be in service, but because of all these delays in delivery, they still got a long ways to go, in terms of reaching their goal of all the cars. For the old cars, they are not long from retirement and BART has a very limited number of the newer cars. On that note, I really hope Bombardier will get their act together, so BART can have many of these new trains in service by the end of this year.
