We're back with some more Fleet of the Future footage! This time we're on our favorite section of the BART system, from Richmond to MacArthur, consisting of fantastic views of San Francisco and the East Bay hills for much of the journey.
Right from the start, we see BART's new testing of double-stacked turnstiles at Richmond; this is to prevent potential fare-evaders from jumping over the gates. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Bloody hate the new fare gates!! A wheelchair user has already demonstrated that the top part closes directly on their head! Plus it does very little to prevent gate hopping since it's so easy to crawl underneath!

Yes I know right! They should get the Muni (Local Metro/Streetcar for San Francisco) ones, like a person said in this comment section. They are much more effective at blocking people from going under or over. Not as much of a fare haven as the old Skytrain system though. No gates! No longer true today though.

Oh I forgot to mention there was that back then, there was a way to skip the Bart gates by taking elevator. Horrible management truly.

@@WeavementSesestea In all fairness, BART was envisioned as a proof of payment system, like most suburban commuter rail usually is. The gates were basically decorative, just a reminder that you _should_ pay. If you’re tall enough, you could literally just step over the barricades and get into the “paid” area at most stations! It seems that BART is now both reintroducing proper proof of payment practices (fare inspectors) _and_ hardening the station entrances. They aren’t just introducing new, proper plexiglass full height fare gates, but also hardening the fences and barriers. Overall, this is along overdue change. If you want people to actually pay, you really need to give then a reason to. For example, in places like France, people will try to jump fare gates on pure principle if no one is actively enforcing fare compliance!

Correction: The red line runs a combination of 8, 9, and 10 car trains. They are split during midday to save electricity. I think you confused it with the orange Richmond to Warm Springs line which has mostly 6 car trains, but also runs 8 cars as well.

Thanks for pointing that out, most people on the platforms seem to ignore the fact that these red line trains are longer and just don't use the front and rear cars much.

Well the new fare gates in a way should help to stop evaders jumping over but someone definitely could crawl underneath so maybe they should put alarms to alert the station agent of a fare evader or put a small turn style underneath the empty space.

They do have alarms if you try to push on the flaps. But no alarm if you crawl through as people already have been doing.

I don't understand this somewhat American custom of designing stock as though they be tube trains for their style over any economy..oh well. I like how you panned over to views seen beyond the other side of train, although I myself would've filmed from the shaded side itself, not that there sunny side of the train. 🍺

I went on that side because I figured the sun wasn't low enough yet to ruin any footage, but principally because the city's skyline is visible looking west. I generally pick the side with the better views, unless the sun becomes too much of a detriment.

A gate that swings open, usually with glass doors. Look at the ones in Atlanta or Vancouver.
