you're right, this performance seems to be based on the new edition, prepared by Dellamagiore. It becomes more difficult, especially As-dur harmonics-section, my friend Violist also said. Mr. Serly did a good job, but at many points he and Mr. Primrose made changes of notes, values, even a key of that section.

Does anyone know if this is the new edition from Peter Bartok and Nelson Dellamagiore? At first I thought that she just made slight changes in register in certain places, like many soloists choose to do, but then I realized that the part with the false harmonics is actually a half-step lower than it appears in the edition I'm using (Serly), which doesn't have any false harmonics in that passage. I'm very intrigued by this now...

+Torterra kart I believe it's the Peter Bartók version, because the B section is Ab, where Serly's version is in A.

+Ellie McEla I'm a bit puzzled by this discussion, because the version of the concerto that I myself have learned is the Serly edition and the B section is definitely in A-flat. I just went and got my sheet music to make sure I wasn't crazy, and it's in my lap here: Serly edition, published by Boosey & Hawekes, with the B section in A-flat. It is the edition with the greenish monochromatic cover and a giant photo of Bartok, and the title page reads "preparation for publication from the composer's original manuscript by Tibor Serly. Viola part edited by William Primrose." I admit I am much less familiar with the Peter Bartok edition, but unless there is more than one Serly edition, I can attest to the key of A-flat in the B section! Someone please correct me if I'm missing anything here. I don't want to be an ignorant violist.

I should add though, that there are key differences between the way TZ plays the concerto and my own Serly sheet music, perhaps most notably by playing the B section in harmonics. I have seen different violists splice together their own versions from the ones available, but I'm not sufficiently familiar with the other editions to know whether or not she has done that for this performance.

Super performance. 'False' harmonics are v. well done and fun, but I'm not sure if I like them. Bought a Tabea Zimmerman recording of this Bartok by accident (thought it was the other Zimmerman when I ordered it) and was grateful for my mistake when I played it. Did like the other Zimmerman's recording though. Some violinists are worthy to play the viola!

@Farnik01 This is the only version I know, where Bartók uses harmonics in this section, it creates an impression of being "false" as you say but it is quite amazing. A viola (or string) player could help us here: are they natural harmonics or artificial harmonics? Natural harmonics are achieved by simply touching the string with one finger at a node point. I hear this is a relatively easy technique. Artificial harmonics, however, are much more difficult. Anyone has an idea in the present case?

That may be but I have never heard any violist play with a better tone than Zukerman. I'm a violist and that man's tone and bowing is simply sublime. I studied with quite a few prominent violists as well, so not like I'm talking with no experience. She's a very good violist to be sure. But so is Roberto Diaz, Jun Takahira, Daniel Foster and others.
