I actually genuinely really properly definitely love the deep, mellow tone of a viola. Played well, it’s an amazing instrument. Instead of hating it (I know, I know), they should duet together - one violin, one viola. Maybe changing who’s on which one. Harness the possibilities. We know you’re great violinists, now prove your versatility 😉 I play the cello, by the way. Appreciating deep tones is in my bones.

Hey, there is an awesome violin and viola duet that was arranged by something Halvorsen that is Handel's passacaglia. If you look up Halvorsen viola violin duet passacaglia you could probably find it. Although the violin is more of the driving melody, the viola has its fair share of difficulty in there as well!

Lmao as a casual viola player this is so funny to me. I remember in high school most of the viola section could read treble with ease because "back in the day" it was hard to find free sheet music online in alto. So when we got bored we would play violin pieces on our violas. But if any of the violin section tried to read in alto they'd reeeeeeeeeealllllllly have to think about it and still get notes wrong. And people say violists aren't smart 😂🥸

I didn’t know a viola sounds like this. It’s actually beautiful. I think it’s the sound..or idk, it doesn’t matter to me what instrument is used as long as it produces beautiful sounds. The viola is like the older sibling but is really underrated and the violin is like the younger sibling that parents favor. I’m not a musician but I have this scene in my head where a viola would fit for melodramatic scenes. Violin is just as good, but the viola has its unique “flavor” that you would not hear from a violin. I wish I can explain it well, but I just can’t. I have no words for it, but here’s a few: beautiful, rich, and deep.

I used to play strictly the violin and always made fun of viola, but when i started playing the viola and saw how different and difficult it was i earned a huge respect for viola, and actually i like the sound of the viola better than the violin, it’s a lot richer, deeper? idk, i definitely wish i had started on the viola rather than the violin as it’s much easier for a violist to play a violin than for a violinist to play the viola.

That’s great to hear as a violist! We r def under appreciated especially in highschool orchestras, there were only a handful of us in mine and we always got stuck with boring pieces-never as melodic as the violin and never packing the punch of the rhythm like the cellos. But the instrument itself is so beautiful, it can reach high notes like the violin but also produces deeper and warmer sounds which I love! So sad to read about people hating on it! ❤

I was the exact same. My violin teacher was also a violist and viola teacher, and she convinced me to try the viola instead. I refused for almost a year, meanwhile there was a viola on display in the music shop where I learn. I finally cracked and gave it a go. I absolutely loved it and a few months after, after saving up and gathering my birthday money, I bought the viola in the shop. I tried other violas but I couldn’t look past the first one I played. I’m a violist, and thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

We went on a trip to the grammar school and presented our instruments to the children. Their response: The violin was too squeaky The viola was very warm-toned and sounded the best The cello was too deep sounding The bass was too scratchy

A few things that will always help. First, use the lower half of the bow and not the tip. You need more weight and cannot just slide around. Concentrate the weight of the bow on the string, especially the C string. You gotta work for the sound because the viola doesn't play itself. Second, make sure you use arm vibrato to bring out the natural sound of the viola. Since it is a larger instrument, it needs a larger vibrato. Third, your thumb can follow the fingerboard for the highest registers. I hope you enjoyed playing in the viola gang! Also, alto clef is awesome! Also, Brett won because he had a better overall sound even though he had trouble with Alto Clef!

Paganini's teacher was the great Violist, Composer and Maestro Alessandro Rolla, who wrote nearly 25 concertos for Viola and more than 200 pieces for solo or accompanied Viola. The pieces went to obscurity for it's difficulty

I've never understood why viola gets such a bad rep. I know very few pieces were actually written specifically for the viola, and it's the unloved support instrument of the orchestra and all that, but in the right hands, a good viola can be made to sound just wonderful. It's just that very few people put the time and effort in practicing an instrument that doesn't have a big solo repertoire. Viola isn't a bad instrument. There's very few capable violists, and even less composers who can make the viola shine. Mozart actually managed it. Bach's cello suites on viola sound beautiful, too

I've heard that it's difficult to keep it in tune, so their opinion of it is likely due to hearing musicians play it out of tune. They have quite a few violist friends though! Also, viola jokes have existed for hundreds of years, it's not just Twoset who makes them!

Pinchas Zukerman started out as a violinist before adding the viola to his toolbox. In a conversation he commented not reading alto clef before taking up the instrument. The suite for jazz piano and violin he commissioned from French jazz composer and pianist Claude Bolling included a movement in which he played viola. Zukerman has performed and recorded works for violin and viola by Mozart with his friend and occasional collaborator Itzhak Perlman. Although Mozart wrote a number of violin concerti in his youth, he actually preferred playing the viola.

Coming from a violist, you guys did great sightreading alto clef! Alto is my home clef, so I had to teach myself treble and bass when I wanted to start piano, and even after 3 years of practicing piano on my own my brain defaults to alto and I still can't sightread treble nearly as well as you both did reading alto.

As a retired professional violist AND violinist, the viola is much harder for several reasons. Most violinist haven't a clue how to properly play the viola. For example, the nature of bowing is very very different from bowing the violin. Bow speed, pressure, articulations, attacks on and into the string are all different. Also, the mindset is different, as well as speech, projection, fingerings. There are very good reasons why so many great composers preferred playing the viola. With all this said, the viola has many acoustical challenges that the violin simply does not have. Most violas are not acoustically designed well and thus are a great disappointment as an instrument. A great sounding viola is EXTREMELY RARE!!! And a person's physical nature has to be considered too! Violinist - tread carefully when entering the realm of the viola! Even angels marvel when the viola is played well by a true violist.

As someone learning violin, the Viola sounds absolutely beautiful (Especially when played professionally lol). The respect I have for Violas for lifting and supporting Violins is tremendous.
