BART to Antioch will open Saturday May 26th for passenger service making everyone's commute easier by taking thousands of cars off heavily traveled Highway 4. The new extension features state of the art Diesel Multiple Units which use renewable diesel. The new trains are convenient, quiet and fast. The project was paid for by Measure J and bridge tolls.

Hopefully this will be extended inland more? I can't really see such a small leg as being the end of expansion 🤔 would be great if it connected with Amtrak in Stockton!

As far as I know eBART cannot go beyond boundary of Contra Costa county. Plans are already in works to extend to Brentwood area. From Stockton it would be much simpler and cheaper to use a service similar to the ACE trains to San Jose only running via existing Amtrak/UP trackage round northern Contra Costa to Richmond or Oakland. At least the eBART system did not make the mistake of BART design as the trackage is 4 foot 8.5 inches in gauge (distance between the rails), the US standard gauge. BART was built to 5 foot 6 inch gauge which it has in common with the Indian State Railway system.
@archlinuxrussian
@archlinuxrussian 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, BART used broad gauge due to design choices with regards to noise and all, if I recall correctly. And the main reason I said eBART should perhaps extend to Stockton would be to minimise inconveniences with connecting systems. Amtrak San Joaquins already runs from Stockton to Oakland (but no further) and from there you can connect w/ the Amtrak Capitol Corridor to San Jose and all, and a few of those stations along that corridor connect well with BART...but still, I think perhaps having eBART in Stockton would draw in some extra ridership? I don't know 🤷

Just to be clear, there is no direct connection in Antioch between eBART, with a station at Hwy 4 and Hillside, and Amtrak, with a station down by the Straits.

I think cutting corners, by it not being electrified or not having BART heavy rail extended, is not the way to do things. I would say the same for any other project that did similar. The U.S. is in the stone age with mass transit.

By building it on non Bart technology and tracks it can be extended on existing freight lines which is extremely cheap. normal BART trains can’t be extended to freight lines because they require wider tracks and they can’t use an at grade crossing. Also the operating costs are significantly lower with these smaller trains.

Rail Faner It will not flop for sure. Commuters from Antioch and east to Stockton Lathrop Lodi Brentwood Tracy etc will fill eBart up. Problem will be further crowding on the BART trains and people that used to get seats boarding west of Pittsburg now having to stand.

Rail Faner Orlando has SunRail, a commuter rail system using the old CSX-Atlantic Coast Line tracks, standard commuter rail cars and push pull diesel-electric locomotives. Orlando is also in line to get Brightline service from south Florida. Do you have suggestions for additional rail services around Orlando?

So, BART, why can the transfer not take place at the existing Pittsburg/Baypoint station? It looks like the new trains are at the right height to use existing platforms. Wouldn't it just require adding an extra rail for the standard gauge trains?
@markplott4820
@markplott4820 6 жыл бұрын
BART is not Standard Guage its 5"6' Indian Guage. and the regular BART tracks have an Electric Third Rail that is NOT compatable with the DMU. also , you DONT want BART competing with other Rail traffic such as BNSF or other operators.
@trainsofthebay5472
@trainsofthebay5472 6 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure no heavier freight trains operate on this extension. Plus, I don't get why third rail would be an issue (I suspect these new trains are narrow enough to avoid it), and the gauge problem can be easily solved by adding an extra rail in between the two existing running rails. I'm also not suggesting that regular BART operate east of Pittsburg/Baypoint...just that the new vehicles be able to access Pittsburg/Baypoint station.

Trains of the Bay Because the tracks are physically different. Normal track like the extension uses are round at the top. Mainline BART uses tracks with flat tops. Hence why you can’t simply add another track in between. It’s either a new platform or rip one of the existing tracks out. Kinda stupid I know.

@realinfoguy
@realinfoguy 6 жыл бұрын
Part of the problem with Livermore is that what the BART Board voted down 5-4 two days ago was a full blown BART extension. Politicians on the stage in Antioch at the eBART opening suggested the board blew it by not considering a BART-lite DMU system like eBART.
@realinfoguy
@realinfoguy 6 жыл бұрын
Tracy would be a much heavier lift than Livermore because it's in San Joaquin County, a non-BART tax-paying county. Clearly, new counties can join BART - - - Santa Clara and San Mateo have done that, but they are much more populous than San Joaquin. Also people would argue why not simply increase ACE (Altamont Commuter Express) service to Tracy, and figure out a better connection between ACE and BART.

How can the rest of the BART system support 2400 more passengers per hour when it is already over capacity at rush hour and plagued by breakdowns, crowding, and delays?
@realinfoguy
@realinfoguy 6 жыл бұрын
Easy. It can't. All it means is the BART trains to SF will fill up faster, there will be fewer seats for East Bay passengers closer to SF, and conditions will be more sardine-like throughout. BART's lines through the transbay tube are essentially at capacity now in terms of train cars per hour, even if they had more trains to run, which they don't. All BART can do is cram more bodies into the existing cars - - - if you haven't noticed, they are doing that by stripping out seats from the cars and making 1 passenger seats where there used to be 2-passenger seats in order to create more sardine-room,. Will not change until they do something really major, like building a second transbay tube, possibly from east Oakland into Alameda, into a new tube, entering SF in Mission Bay area, then possibly crossing the existing BART subway near Civic Center and running out the Geary Corridor into the outer Richmond.
@sfrocker1
@sfrocker1 6 жыл бұрын
Curious about why bart would go through Geary to Outer Richmond?
@realinfoguy
@realinfoguy 6 жыл бұрын
Jason N . Because taking electric streetcars off Geary in December 1956 and replacing them with diesel spewing buses was one of the most bone-headed transit decisions in American history. 60+ years later they still don't have it right, even with SF's still contentious and unsettled plan for a half-assed solution called BRT Bus Rapid Transit. Buses of any kind are horribly wrong and laughably insufficient in such a dense travel corridor. Geary has needed a new electrically powered rail transit system like BART since the old B-Geary streetcars came off, but early plans to run a BART leg out Geary and then over the Golden Gate Bridge in the 1960s died when Marin County decided not to join BART.

Jose Olalde The ribbon cutting ceremony in Antioch is at 11:00 AM Friday 5/25 followed by free rides on the new system from Antioch station only between 1:00 - 8:00 PM on Friday. The new line will begin operating between Antioch and Pittsburg Bay Point at about 6:00 AM Saturday 5/26 and from that point forward, there will always be connecting service to every BART train arriving at or departing from Pittsburg Baypoint.

"Clean Diesel". Those 2 do not go together San Franfiasco. We've had these trains in Europe for the past 20 years but we're moving past this technology. To be honest my recommendation would be to get funding to electrifying the route as soon as possible, buy electric variants because I know they're out there, and try and sell the diesel units to a place where they would fit better, like another line that perhaps is built upon old existing rail lines where electrification hasn't been on the mind... but this is a brand new line... no wonder America is infamous for it's bad transport and bad effort at battling climate change
