I give them free drinks, when they did something nice for me. I live in a small city and if a person helps me clean the tables or when he cleans up the glass he dropped, he will get something for free. Also if youre a friend/family of mine. Im such a good bartender, i once drove a customer of mine home. I knew his sister and he couldnt walk ... Happens from time to time. But we had costumers that threw glasses at us and we dont have security. anyway this Job is hard. I dont expect tipping, but i have the right to complain on the next day. Even if i Sound whiny

Not necessarily. At my bar, we give our regulars special pricing on their drinks. They’ve been coming in for upwards of 15 years, so we treat them well. They bring their friends, and we get more business. Not every bar is the same, but if you treat your bartender well, even if the tip isn’t huge, you’ll always get good service. We’re all humans!

Bastycore agreed meals at restaurants in canada are expensive as it is. for exceptional service i will tip $1 regardless of amount of order. if bartenders keep expecting tip, owners will get away without paying fair wage.

Anyone going to a good bar generally won't end up with free drinks. The only time you'll get a free drink is if you're a regular and they know you tip good. It's not because you tipped well before, it's because you'll tip BETTER after.

For all the non-americans who are baffled by the tipping thing: in america, servers and bartenders are paid less than minimum wage because it is expected that they will receive tips. Sometimes they get as low as $5.50 in places where the regular minimum wage is $10 or $11. It shouldn't be that way, companies should be the ones with the responsibility to pay their employees' salary. But it isn't bartenders and servers fault that it works this way. Don't punish them by not tipping just because you think the companies should be paying them more. Until there is legislation to change this, the right thing to do is to tip, even if the service is bad. Just tip less than you normally would but 15-20% is what is typically expected

Let's be clear on this. It's basic science. Less ice will water the drink down faster because the liquid isn't as cold as a drink with full ice. "Less Ice" gets you a warmer drink, which is gross. Also, we will never add more alcohol, as already stated. Imagine asking a chef to prepare something differently because YOU think it will be better. We are here to prepare these things to be good, because it's our job. Not yours.

I bartend on Maui, where it’s the law that your employer must provide health insurance if employed 20 or + more hours/week. So, because of this requirement, most bars schedule you 19 hours (part-time status) on purpose, to avoid having to pay for employee health insurance. That’s why most service industry peeps here work 2 or more jobs.. because of low hours at each place of employment.

Tips are way more than living wage is America’. If you make 40k a year you are in the top 80% of earning Americans. Most bartenders make 50-80k a year. Small businesses would have to gouge food prices 500% to pay their employees a living wage for 40k a year

As a once-bartender, I agree with everything EXCEPT tipping 10% for *poor* service. If it's for a newbie who's made some honest mistakes, sure. Having to lose the smile & get tough with a rude or belligerent customer... well, I'll tip extra. Otherwise, you should expect to reap what you sow. I've only left a single penny (old school) to a server just once, but believe me, they earned it.

I like this video. All the bartenders are cool. The tip thing is pretty standard. One time, ONE TIME, I tipped the bartender $80 on a $20 tab. The next time I went in he tried to give it back!!! The tipping thing surprised me a little. Where I live (Germany) tipping isn't necessarily expected, you just round up a bit and if the service was really good, you give like 10% and there are very few who do more. But I guess American waiters live off of tips, but for a European it's very strange to go to big US cities, pay more than at home, get food that isn't phenomenal bit decent and then being expected to tip like 20%. Also, if the service was bad, you usually don't get a tip at all, 10% for being disappointed by the waiter seems like a bonus for doing a bad job, doesn't rly make sense

I feel that given tip or not you should provide a good service. Granted customer shouldn't be rude or disrespectful & I understand tipping but not an extremely amount. That's why people get paychecks. As a waitress I'm happy if I get $3 or $5. Who gets mad over being given free money?! Be polite to the server and servers should provide a good experience & give recommendations when asked. So much complaints about tipping...stop giving free service to celebrities who do have money... The one that deserves the tips are the pizza man during the rain!

This varies alot from country to country as well, like in Norway, we're legally not allowed to serve you more then one unit at the time (but no-one cares if you order 1 drink and 3 beers at the same time) however drinks are strictly regulated, all drinks besides a few international ones, like long island ice tea is max 4cl, while international ones can be cll.(one unit is 4ml of liquor) but there very few of them. Also by law, you are required to measure up every time you make a drink so no free pouring. Tipping is also not common , nor that needed here. Also, giving out free alcohol is illegal, so is commercials and 2 for 1 sales and so on.

As a bartender I agree with most of what's shown here except the tipping. I'm not sure how the tipping system works in the U.S but tipping shouldn't always be an expectation. Granted that some rely on tips more than others but it should be up to the customers if they want to tip you or not.

at my bar I put some small bowls by the bottles. each one has a different spirit in it (whiskey, vodka and gin is usually enough) and so when someone asks for a strong drink i just dip their glass in one of the bowls so the rim is covered in alcohol. they take on sip and think i've given them three shots in a glass. great for tips without giving them anything free :)

For the people watching in the UK; All the things about catching the attention of the bar tender... Yes We see you, we'll get to you. When I work I have a mental queue in my head, if you wait patiently and politely, you jump up the queue, start waving, tapping or waving money in my face and you go to the back. I don't expect tips everytime as I get paid a proper wage. But if you want preferential treatment, £5 will get you a long way at the start of the night, I'll remember you and you'll get bumped up the queue a little. Know your order before I start serving you, you start asking your friends what they want, imma serve someone else who knows their order. If you ask me for what I recommend, you'll either get a vodka coke or whichever cocktail is fastest to make

As a Bartender from the UK I wholeheartedly apologise for any pretentious bartenders you've come across. I think it's unprofessional to expect a tip like you are owed, just enjoy your profession with a smile on your face and treat your customers nicely and respectfully, and I'm sure they will reciprocate. badyuff your comment confuses me but I may have misinterpreted when I read it. I don’t think they expect a tip but it’s always nice to get it. And of course they won’t give you a free drink just for being nice to them. They are in the business of selling and providing drinks. If you tip well you’re more likely to get something from them as a form of a thank you.

I don’t expect anything else from them other than my drink no matter how nice I am, but these people are expecting tips from the video, and quite frankly, I just don’t think them being nice (which is their job, and many of them don’t even do) justifies an entitlement

Bartenders will serve you well if you treat them like a person and not just a worker. A lot of times we go off of vibes. If you’re polite and patient, You are awesome and I will try to give my full attention throughout the night. But if you’re disrespectful, I will give minimum service. I don’t expect so much tip, but I definitely appreciate it when guests give 20% or more. You will be remembered by your generosity. Also. Please understand when it’s busy, service won’t be quick. Take a look around and see how many other people are trying to get the same attention as you.

I used to bartend at a friend's bar, small place that can gather up to 40 people. Me and the waiter (another friend) there would split the tips we would get and never argued about it. We still got decently paid plus free drinks&food (of course not overdo it.) We saw the tips as rewards for a job well done, and usually use that money to go to the club or just buy some snacks and hang out for a few hours since we are both night owls. Best 5 months of my life.

Afrolicioso I tip 3% for bad service. I'm a student studying in Canada, and I come from a country that servers don't get tipped. I tip 10% for ok service, and 13% - 15% for good service.

If you ask for something I like, you can be sure, you'll get the most expensive cocktail I got. If you wave your card in my face, I'll assume you found it on the floor, and I will grab it and put it ind lost & found. Now I'm a bartender in Denmark, so tipping is not really a cultural thing, but if you really feel you've gotten a great service. Doesn't have to be much, but remember I'm sharing with the rest of the bar. I don't think many guests thinks of this. I can inly give you a great service thanks our runners and everybody else helping out ;)

​@@afghaaj Coming in with a late quarantine reply here :) The "thing" with tipping in Denmark is that it's not expected, as in AT ALL. I work part time as a bartender every now and then, and I make 15$ an hour just for standing there having fun, mixing some G&T's and having a few drinks. Minimum wage for a skilled waiter/waitress is 22200DKK or 3200$ a month (for 37 hours a week). I've never been tipped while bartending, except for when a confused American tried it and I said thanks but no thanks. I've tied tipping the waiter after a 5 course meal for 12 people and he refused the tip (I think we offered somewhere around 150-200$ can't quite remember) he said he had already been paid - as in service was part of the bill. So to answer your question, we pay our bartenders/waiters a living wage. Most will accept a tip if you want to give them one, but I don't know a single bartender who expects to be tipped.

For those people who say they don’t deserve to pay the bartenders / servers wages.... Servers & Bartenders almost always have to tip out the kitchen/hosts/doormen/coat check/security from their own tips at the end of the night. Guests who don’t tip often cost the server money because they still have to tip out to others based on the price of the bill although the received no tip.

I hope to God that if I ask for less ice that I am going to get more MIXER. I would be really unhappy if I got a smaller cup or less total volume in the cup. I ask for less ice for more than one reason. I both do not want my drink to get watered down while I sip it slowly (my preferred method of drinking mixed drinks) AND I want LESS alcohol in my alcohol-mixer ratio. "Normal" drinks are way too strong for me, especially if the bartender likes me. They think they are doing me a favor by putting more liquor in, but they really are not. I do not like the taste of the hard liquor. I hope the bartenders who were interviewed are aware of that. If they really want some extra money for the extra mixer I will oblige, but I have never encountered that.

Tasha Fox why not just ask for extra mixer. Bartenders can't assume you want more mixer, especially when most of times others say the same thing and want more alcohol. The worse thing anyone can do when placing any order for anything is not be clear on what they want.

I don't usually ask them, and they usually do it. I have watched them. They put in a half scoop of ice or so, pour the liquor in, same amount as they usually do, then they top off with mixer. It's pretty simple, and exactly the same thing as they normally do, only there is usually more ice so the top off is a lot shorter in a regular drink. Not only that, it's what I was trained to do as a bartender if this ever happened, in my short stint bar tending. Never have I ever run into bartenders like in this video on this one issue.

For everyone saying that where they come from they don’t tip so why should they tip here I’ll just say this. No matter where you go, typically the server “tips out the house” meaning they take how much they sell and typically give about a 5% total over to the kitchen, bartenders and bussers/hosts. So if you don’t tip I am literally paying for that. I had a table the other day give me a $5 on a $300 bill so not only was I getting less than minimum wage when serving you but now I had to pay from my own pocket on top of that.
