@marcush4741
@marcush4741 6 жыл бұрын
Annoying people exist. Asking for something is fine. Servers only really get annoyed when people ask for more than the average person and then tip less than the average person. There are high maintanence people at my bar. If they tip 20%, IDC if they ask for anything their heart desires. But if theyre high maimtenence and tip 10%, Im gonna remember that, since I have to tip out bussers 4% of everything sold, drink runners 4% of drinks (including refill costs, despite making nothing on them, food runners 5% of food, and bartenders 4% of drinks. If somebody tips less than 10%, I literally lose money by having them. Dont fear asking for things. Just dont go out to eat if you cant tip a server for the best service of your life, because one day youll get it, and people who stiff then are remembered for years).

If you tip well (20%) and try to be polite servers wont mind you. Mainly, order off the menu, don't complain, be quiet, tip well, and leave at an appropriate time (1h 30min). Servers will be happy. If you have a good server, tell the manager. You can ask your server for the manager, or ask another employee. Always preface it with "I'd like to compliment you/my server to the manager. The manager will walk out shortly excited to hear from you. If you have a complaint a manager will begrudging approach you.

TheBobtheturtle lol why would anyone remember their servers name, its weird af to call a waiter by its name lol, and the waiving thing i think its perfectly fine, i think its a way to make the server know that you have already chosen the food or that you want the check. Usually in my country we only waive when we want the check and commonly waiters will know that u are asking for the check so they will automatically go to make the check. Anyway sometimes they take a really long time and literally end up forgetting

As someone from England, I will never understand America’s tipping system, it’s sad that people don’t get payed enough so they have to get people who don’t employ them to pay them enough to live comfortably. Here we tip £5 - £10 on average, I think tipping over £100 seems crazy! But then again that’s common in America and I get that the minimum wage is not even enough to live on.
@EnthusiasticNaps

On the subject of tipping: They don't tip overseas! The restaurants pay their servers living wages! So if it is a tourist and they don't tip you, cut them some slack! I tip (minimum 20 percent but usually 25 percent) but I hate that the system is being gamed in such a way that the customer ends up helping the server make ends meet instead of the employer just paying a decent wage! Same goes for cab drivers or any other job where "tipping" helps the worker make ends meet!

I hate it when people with fish allergies come to our sushi restaurant, it's like they have a death wish, or they really want an excuse to sue someone. Trust me no food in an inner city sushi restaurant is more than 1 metre away from fish. We cut the fish in front of customers, we cook it in front of customers, it wheels past customers on the conveyor belt, everyone else at the table will be eating fish - it is not a safe zone!

@@kaylamwalker1 it also isn’t that simple either, you don’t know what it’s like to be quadruple sat on a Saturday night do you? Having a party of 10, a 4 top, and 3 2 tops? I want you to go in on a busy night and eat one time at a popular restaurant and take some time to actually observe the servers and see how many things they are expected to do at once. All of y’all think it’s all about you and y’all are the only ones that matter when I got about a total of 20-25 other people I’m waiting on as well, and little things add up, “oh I don’t like this I want it off my bill.” “Can I get some more ketchup?” “Can I get a refill?” “I never got__ is it coming soon?” “It’s my sons birthday today and I have a cake so when we’re done eating can you__?” “Okay we’re ready to pay but we’re splitting the bill 10 ways and we’re not all paying card we got 5 people paying cash” Picky eaters who want to create their own dish, so on and so on. Do you think you could handle all that at once? Just you by yourself? It’s a lot. So y’all gotta be patient when you go out to eat in busy days, expect waits you’re not the center of attention. Often times your waiter isn’t inattentive, they’re just weeded. “In the weeds” is a sever term basically meaning I’m fucked rn..

I will never understand the tip culture in the USA.. a restaurant is a service business like many others, good service is literally the job. Consumers shouldn't have to carry the restaurant's owner's responsibility. Restaurants - PAY YOUR WORKERS DECENTLY. Waiters - Start unions and/or demand appropriate legislation. Tips around the rest of the world are earned from an exceptional attention, good service is expected by default. Tipping can be even viewed as disrespectful in some places. The reason why decent wages in this industry are rare is due to workers getting used to the almost forced down tipping system that can lead to crazy sporadic income if the restaurant has a high influx of customers.

It started during the great depression, I believe. Restaurants couldn't afford to pay their waiters so they shifted blame to customers if their waiter went home with barely enough money for essentials like food and clothes. Nowadays waiters and waitresses are allowed to get paid as little as roughly $2/hr (depending on what state) and tips are expected to make up the difference to equal minimum wage. While it is unfair that service workers arent paid enough, and while service workers and employers are trying to fix legislation its not immediate. In the meantime please TIP YOUR SERVERS!

If you have a special occasion but don’t want to tip a server, then order catering and stay home. It sucks but as a server, I depend on others for my income. That server is probably working their butt off to make sure your family has a good time, and to say you “honestly don’t have enough” to give a good tip is nonsense. If you can afford to eat at that nice restaurant, then you can afford to tip your server.

Unfortunatly that's unrealistic. The system has been this way for far to long. You have to factor in food cost and waste pay for cooks, dishwashers, prep cooks, bakers, host, managers etc. Etc. Not everyone would have the same mind set ethier. If a pasta dish that used to cost 13.00 suddenly cost 27.00 (which it would HAVE to increase that much in order to compensate for the now higher wage every server in the restaurant is making) people would be outraged. Resturant would close and be a thing of the past. Paying servers 2.80 an hour is a big part of how restutants stay open

My mom has celiac disease, so I also try to accommodate people with allergies as much as I can. What I can't stand though, is when we have a big wedding reception going on (200+) and a guest comes up to me while we're already serving their party to tell me: "So... I am allergic to X... could you get me something different?" If they ask as soon as they read the menu when they arrive? Great. I'll get the kitchen on that immediately. Half an hour before dinner will be served? Okay, talking to the chef right now. But when we're already serving? And you expect me to magically conjure up food for you right this moment out of a busy, bustling kitchen trying to get the planned menu out as fast as possible? No. That just doesn't work. I'm always happy to help if they are willing to wait, if they forgot to ask before we started serving but I get seriously annoyed when they just expect me to randomly get food matching their specific needs out of thin air, stat.

Nope. If they have internet connections or the restaurant is clearly for food that caters to specific foods, google a place that might serve you. I worked at a southern bbq place and people would come and ask if anything was vegan, gluten free, healthy. NO. Why would it be that way? The question only made sense when we got foreign customers because they probably weren't familiar with the food. Or I also worked in a bakery. So many angry folks that were mad we weren't making healthy, sugar free, gluten free, vegan friendly cakes and pastries. Google it and find the bakery to cater to you. Those types of recipes might be in progress, but it's hard to make good tasting food recipes that caters to certain diets. Especially sweets.

It takes a while to split your ticket up like that and we only have a couple server stations to do that.

I work as a hostess at a restaurant and I'm the one that has to clean up those messes children make. I thoroughly enjoy my job, but when a customer has 6 children and doesn't even remotely attempt to help clean up, that gets under my skin. I've spent 20 minutes cleaning up ONE table for 6 little kids and it was absolutely disgusting. Also, as a hostess I have to go around and cater (pun) to the customers by refilling drinks, collecting dirty dishes, and help out the servers and bartenders. I have seen the lousy tippers, rude and inappropriate customers, verbal tips, and awkward encounters. I've only had my job for 2 months, and I've witnessed a lot of these pet peeves. 😂

Are servers really that annoyed with people with allergies? My friends with allergies do tend to eat at home most of the time, but if we all want to go out somewhere together you would hope they would try their best and take it seriously instead of being so irritated? Many places including pizza places have vegan, dairy free, or gluten free options. So it seems like a pretty reasonable question. :( I can understand if the customers are being unreasonable about it somehow but it seems like something that should be expected and trained for instead of being offended by it.

10 dollars is standard, if you where there for about an hour and spend 65-85 dollars, a general tip is about 15%- Also generally speaking middle to upper class restaurants have cheaper food prices in America than in Europe which help balance a tip, I.E. let’s say 4 people went to dinner for an hour and the total is 65 dollars, 15% of that is 9 dollars each person is responsible for about 2.25 of a tip, it’s not expected that each person pays a individual tip its collective, if your there for more than an hour/ hour and a half, it’s appropriate to tip closer to 20/25% because the longer your at that table the less people they can wait on. But 2.25 is not a big dollar amount for going somewhere, having someone serving you for an hour or so....

Ashley Arnold Frustrating part of that is when you have a large family or people who don’t consider you when choosing places to eat. I always like to look at the restaurant’s website before I go- cuz usually they’ll have at least the menu. There been so many frustrating times though where they take me to an unknown small place that doesn’t offer a gluten free menu and I don’t even know what food they sell. So, just be kind the gluten intolerant child who gets mixed in with groups. I’m already anxious when ordering food normally. Being in an unfamiliar place and having to quiz the servers isn’t fun for me, even watching my relatives asking the questions for me because I’m too shy hurts me.

Okay, Carol, now I have to go back to the kitchen, throw out this food and have the chef remake Suzy's food. Then they complain that it's taking too long. I can't. You simultaneously complain about people asking for more coffee while chewing but then admit that you come over while they’re chewing on purpose. How about you wait until they’re done chewing before asking questions instead of trying to avoid drink refills (ie your actual job). That’d be like a fire department hanging up midcall before getting the address so they wouldn’t have to go to the burning building

I think it's time for servers to come together and demand that their minimum wage be higher. That way they wouldn't have to put up with rude customers to get a tip. Plus I think its unethical for an employer to pay an unfair wage to its workers. That is the employer's responsibility not the consumer's. (I definitely do tip because I know its important because of the system we have in place now. But I think the system is wrong)

4everInTheClouds so the Please explain where the employer is going to get the extra money to pay the servers, keep up with the restaurant and still pay for inventory I think that if you can't afford to tip or just don't want to you shouldn't be allowed in a restaurant

I would not mind paying more for food if that meant the workers got paid well. Also many industries are able to keep up inventory and pay their workers. Look at retail I pay for the products but customer service very much apart of the retail industry . But I don’t tip the customer service staff but I do pay for the products. The price products does take into account paying for labor.

Yeah what your saying could work but a restaurant is completely different from retail it would take a lot to change the laws to do this and I think that a lot of people would rather try to make our system better than completely change and all you have to do change is tip decently but I'm not trying to completely debunk your opinion you completely deserve to think freely

The thing is they usually make way more than minimum wage. Even if they only have 3 tables every hour and the totals come up to $20 each. That's $6 an hour if they only tip 10% plus the minimum wage they make of like 7 per hour. When I go out to eat it is usually at least $50 and tip 20% so $10 and that's what most people do. Plus if they make less than regular min wage then their employer has to compensate the difference. Everyone complains fast food workers should find a different job if they don't like minimum wage(not saying I agree) but same goes for servers

He wasn't saying their food was an hour late, he was saying there was an hour wait for a table outside, or they could eat inside and eat right away. Also, even if your food is an hour late, that doesn't have anything to do with the server, they don't make your food, that's a problem with the kitchen. If they give you good service, then they should be tipped accordingly.
@patata871
@patata871 6 жыл бұрын
I know that he was talking about an hour wait for a table outside, but I was just giving another scenario. I also know that the waiter doesn't make the food, so it is not their fault... but I will still wave them down to ask where it is. I won't be rude about it, I will simply ask. And if waiters give you bad service, then they should also be tipped accordingly (not tipped).

When you're eating out, knowing your server's name and calling them by name is a much better way to get your server's attention than anything else. In general, it's rude to call someone "you," and the fact that most waiters and waitresses will tell you their name when you are seated. A server is a person, not a robot.

You don’t have to, but you can at least try and remember your server’s name for the hour or so that you’re eating there. It’s not that hard to remember at least for a certain span of time, and if you’re a regular, you’ll probably remember the name eventually. Otherwise, just say “excuse me” and in addressing them, “ma’am” or “sir”, etc.
