Hi Bart, that's a beautiful collection of equipment and tools you have there, my compliments! I don't have nearly so much stuff, but realy enjoy working with my lathe, milling machine and tig welder. By the way, I live in Flevoland, so if you need some help getting your machines up and running and get better organized, I'm happy to come over and help you. Take care, Arnoud

Thanks. For me it also feels like giving a machine a second live and that its in good hands now. The best machine retirement home you could think of. Taking good care and getting used every know and then to make them feel usefull. I cant save them all but at least e few ;-)

And I thought I had a problem. Thank you for the inspiration. I have fully automatic horizontal bandsaw (that fell from forklift) in the pipeline, turret drill press, 2 metal brakes, Clausing lathe, and Delta Bandsaw already in the garage waiting for their turn:)

Hi Bart, good to see you back, and happy to see you have been working on 'the collection'. You can never have too many tools and cutters, it's the storage that's the problem. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work. :)

Thank you Pedro, its good to be back in the shop and YT. I also thought there wasn't a thing like to many cutters, but I believe if reached that point ;-). I want to sell some HSS shell mills and buy a few carbide insert versions instead.

How did you repaired the cast iron crack? I need to repair my cross table of my small mill. Hoping I could weld up some deep cuts and surface grind them
@bartharkemametalworks22993 жыл бұрын
I will do a video on the bandsaw next week. For welding i slowly heated it up. Then TIG welded it for very small parts at a time. Not to much heat imput and not to cold. The trick is no big temperature changes. Peening can also help. Normaly I would use cast iron welding rods with Nickel. I didn't have them and used 316 stainless instead. That also works but is even more critical with temperature.

I think we (hobby machinists) all have á tool problem, no matter how big The shop gets, it will always become To small after a while. I’m currently struggeling with local authorities for my plans for a bigger shop! I’m interested in the shell mill cutters. Which size arbour are those? I’m from the Netherlands Central Gelderland
@bartharkemametalworks22993 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, yes the shop will fill up. Maybe at some point its good to limit the size. I have to measure the mills and check what arbour I have for them. I know I have some Morse taper 3. Not sure if I have others but you can always buy an extra arbour to fit you machine. Send me a mail to bartharkema at g mail dot com.

In all seriousness, I think I have something that you would want that we can perhaps work a swap on. I have a NOS royal brand 40 taper collet chuck. It takes the same size collets as your shaublin lathe. I have a full set of collets up to 1 in by hardinge. Would be willing to trade for all kinds of different things.

time to add shelving above your machines so you can store all the tooling and instruments near and above. Looks like you have plenty of ceiling height. I think you are overloading yourself with all these different disciplines. I think you may find you don't have time to master any, and may find that you need to take on work to feed your addiction. I may be wrong... focus.
@bartharkemametalworks22993 жыл бұрын
Thanks, the shelves above the machines is a good point but a bit hard to reach. But on some places that would work. You have a point with focussing. I like to be an alround machinist and metalworker en love to learn new skills. I still building my shop and skillset. It will change to be more productive and not working on machines this much. If I needed to look from a business perspective I would be better of focussing on a few machines / skills. But I don't enjoy doing the same skill every day. I work hard on my 'normal' teaching job and that gives me the money that I need. For my shop, I do have a plan. I made a list of my 'dream shop' machines around 5 years ago. I have added a few things but most is still the same and I focus on that. I know what machines I want and what I dont want. I'm very selective in that. This Covid year I decided to work on building the shop and machines. Next year I will focus more on costumer jobs.
