Looking at buying a 1966 Okuma LS. I dont think it is in vary good condition, not seen it in person yet. Super cheap price though. I have to be ready to do all test possible when I go see it. Most worried about the ways being worn. Does look like the ways where greased when the lathe was decommissioned though in pics...?? Some one cared enough to do that?, I can not asses bed condition in pics due to all the grease. Not a spec of rust it seams. Will it be worth it.... even at the low price? Seller is not machinist and wants it gone from his shop. it is listed at what I think is about equivalent to scrap price. Not under power. Be another 1-1/2 weeks before I can inspect it on site. Might be the deal of a life time or might be a lump of scrap iron. I did find a guy who owned a machine shop and did a video on buying one and then using the tail stock mount to build a grinding jig then regrinding the ways that way and it turned out well. Tail stock ways are usually not worn like bed ways. Don't want to buy it then work on it for 10 yrs before It can make good parts, I'm 66, don't have that much time to mess around. Might just be worth it to find one for 10k that is in super good condition and buy that instead.

Awesome job on the frame updates and incorporating the stand into the frame update. I don't have the space you have and have casters on the stand so I can move it about. Looks as if I am going to come with version 4 to get a stable stand I will be happy with.

Dear, excellent video. I have a question. Does the oil need to go out on the 2 tubes? Mine isn’t working and it spills oil everywhere.
@bartharkemametalworks229927 күн бұрын
Thanks. About the oil. One line is pressure, one line is exhaust. So only one has oil from the pump going up. Do you have the manual and parts list?

@ thanks very much for your support. No, I dont have no information about the machine, I purchase it without any.

Great repair. I recently watched a guy try to baton some wood with a knife like this (stick tang) and it went about as well as you might think, the look on his face as the blade broke off in a chunk of wood while he was left with the handle in his hand was both tragic and funny.

I have the same lathe and i was threading a large shaft and the half nut he wouldn't release which caused the tool to crash. i can see the nut engage the lead screw, and i can see the screw turning, but the apron won't move. Seems to me the half nut must be damaged, but i can't see any broken parts. Any thoughts??

Hey, I have just bought an old LS 450 and was wondering if anyone here might have the English version of the manual. The machine has a Japanese manual

Hi Bart, I appreciate the quality work. People think I go overboard doing things like that. Mine is older than yours but it has some different features. The compound is slotted and has an Aloris quick change and the cross slide has an extended area about 4” to the back? I converted mine to a VFD drive and did away with the relays. I am wondering if you found a rubber for that oil plunger. What did you use to clean the apron? I don’t do work for others I use mine to make parts for my tractor restorations. Many old parts are not available. Another thing is mine has a cam lock chuck mount, don’t know if it was ordered that way or someone changed it.

I've seen a few of these recently, and it looks to be a quality machine, yours included, at least the mechanics of the machine seem to be in good condition. I did see one with the extra heads, especially one that had both fast and slow hand feeding on it. Nice find, despite the tooling issues, and you can always get more of those.

Hi, it an amazing build, I'm surprised you didnt build all the parts for the motor too 😊. How much pressure did you have on the belt? I'm using a spring to hold tension on the one I'm building?

Hey great video, saw your other pullmax video about the vibration and was wondering if you changed or fixed anything? The pullmax looks to be running smoother in this video. I have a P7 and it vibrates just like yours. Any info would be great! Thanks Mark.
@bartharkemametalworks22994 ай бұрын
Thanks. No changes and it's still vibrating. But that is only on the low speed and I'm using the high speed. Also must admit that I don't use the machine very much.

Hello, thank you for this really informative 😊 just for my knowledge, instead of welding it, couldn't you just heat it up using the tig torch and let it cool down? That way you won't have to turn the weld down everytime. Thanks 😊
@Pawcu4ever7 ай бұрын
Just read the other comments and realised that someone else suggested something similar 😅 thanks anyways for your videos!
@bartharkemametalworks22997 ай бұрын
@Pawcu4ever Yes you could heat it up but the effect of welding is more, and personally I have a bit more control in small areas. This shaft was short and needed a tight bend. If it was longer, bigger or less bend than I would only heat it up. The effect is also relative the diameter of the shaft. Small shaft like this has little effect on heating up with a torch. You heat up almost the entire shaft (unless you have a very powerful and small torch) and ten there is little cold steel to keep it in place, so that the heated area can pull it straight when it cools down. When the whole shaft is heated and cooled it just expand and shrink but no straightening.

Hi Bart, I have the same machine here in Australia that I’m currently restoring. Mine is missing the cross slide and compound slide lock levers. I see you play with it quickly in your video but I’m unsure of how they’re meant to function. If you can help me describe them and the function or pull one out and send me some photos please reach out!

Any idea how to decode the serial number?
@bartharkemametalworks22997 ай бұрын
Yes! Its a Japanese calendar thing. Take the first two numbers of the serial number tag and add 25. This was the year the machine was made. The second set is the month. The last 4 numbers are the serial nr.

My Cincinnati lathe has the same convention regarding the sliding and facing power feeds. I can change direction of the leadscrew without stopping the spindle (at reasonably slow speeds) via a dog clutch on the threading gear box.
