This second symphony was composed by the amazing and talented Ries and dedicated to his close friend Beethoven. This masterpiece is a true musical pearl in harmony, delicacy and unequaled beauty. The direction and orchestral interpretation are fabulous. Thanks for this magnificent recording that gives us unforgettable moments of pleasure.

I adore especially the great Finale - what a firework! The symphonies of Ries are the discovery of the year for me (after loving is piano concertos alrealdy for a long time) !!

This is a fascinating historical document. We need to hear more works like this by contemporaries of Beethoven - and Schubert, of course. Or was Beethoven just a huge Colossus that blocked out the sunlight so that nothing else grew? Clearly not. Europe must have been teeming with talented composers. This symphony may sound derivative to our ears but it is of its time and there beautiful passages in it.

The First movement is like a combo of mvt. 1 of Beethoven 3 and 5 respectfully - as though he took arguments from both and made something coherent all the same. The Second movement recalls the first movements of 3 and 5 as well - its almost like Ries' memoirs of Beethoven symphonies. Fascinating. Third movement is a hoot, definitely one that will stick in your ear. But, that Trio section is a gem : > ) The Finale is another healthy mix of Beethoven 5 and parts of Die Zauberflöte (it's churning in this movement more - although, I get a sense of it throughout the work). Brilliant work. It's like: Remembering my friend, Louie.

I really appreciate your time and effort to get this music with its score out there. I must admit I’m a hardcore Beethoven fan. However, having the opportunity to listen to other composers of his time is really refreshing and humbling. Thank you for the upload!

Dedicated to Beethoven, and a respectful and one of the most impressive homages to the great master. My wife and I really enjoyed this one.

The Allegretto in the third movement is a diabolic one, this part stayed in my head for months ! Really love that 2nd symphony, good idea to post all Ries's !

If you like this one then you’ll like the third movement of the 7th, it’s even more diabolical and more original

That was a wonderful way to start the day! I'd never heard of Ries before. I wonder what Beethoven thought. Lovely playing too!

This symphony is substantial enough, and delightful enough, to be dedicated to Ries' teacher, Beethoven, in fact it would be just as substantial and just as delightful without the references to the Master. Ries' music has an originality and a personality of its' own, especially in its' rhythmic structure.

Ries is a fantastic composer, sadly his eighth symphony is nowhere to be found on youtube
You can find it now, also a note, the 8th was composed before 7 it was just published after I think which led it being called 8. But 7 was Ries’s final symphony

The first part of the symphony is, of course, the impressions of Mozart's symphony 39. Intonation, rhythm, orchestration. Imitation is a hidden admiration! I haven’t listened yet. Identity is not enough, but it is pleasant by ear.

J'avoue découvrir. Un (fervent) disciple de Beethoven ? Merci KZbin. Je me précipite sur mon gros dico Marc Honegger. De retour ;ben oui... élève de Beethoven de 1801 à 1805. Ça laisse des traces...bruyantes. Et il y a du talent.

it's very different from Beethoven's style.
@ewaldsteyn4693 жыл бұрын
Certainly so. The echos of Beethoven's influence cannot be denied, yet he clearly devoped his own style within that influence. Ries was not the "poor man's Beethoven'. He was a brilliant composer who managed to find his own voice as he was building on the foundation laid by Beethoven, just as great master himself had build on the foundations laid before his time.

I have never heard a piece of music (outside of the postmodern era) that is so profoundly saturated in a single, particular work of another composer as this is with Beethoven’s 3rd.
@jb1980ist4 жыл бұрын
The first movement is so much like Beethoven's 3rd that it's kinda hard to take seriously.
@bartjebartmans4 жыл бұрын
Your comment is hard to take seriously. Ries' style is quite different from Beethoven's plus there are no direct quotes only hints, which is quite a nice achievement unfortunately lost on you.
