I love this recording. I think Richter is much better at playing these pieces than Bartok himself, Bartok seems to play everything at breakneck speed apart from anything else, so Bartok is a genius composer, not such a great piano player, whereas Richter is a genius piano player.

Although I just listened to this which is allegedly Bartok himself, I don't know

Bartok is the one who is writing the songs. It has nothing to do with how well he plays piano, it's how he hears his songs. If he wants them to be fast, so be it. Maybe that's the culture he's writing for. These in particular were dance songs, so they would be fast. Bartok died in 1945, and this is 1970, so it's not Bartok. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4WUmH-kqpmir7M this one is, though,

@@kimsechrist4139 So are you suggesting that the composer's own performance of his music is the only "authentic" or somehow "legitimate" one?
@OzanFabienGuvener8 ай бұрын
Bartok doesn't play everything European; It was greatly influenced by folkloric performance in terms of rhythm and phrasing. This is both difficult for modern ears and contrary to the expectations of "classical music". I love Richter's playing, but in Bartok's playing all the pieces fall into place.

Seems Richter was about to fall a sleep on this recording. Don't dare to think of the pour audience

In order to fully express the harmonies in a piece it is sometimes necessary to slow the tempo. In doing this, Richter was able to reveal inner voices and harmonies in many of the pieces he played.
