Still my favorite portrayal of Baba Yaga in really any media. She's exactly how she was in her mythology; a neutral force that could ruin your life or guide you and help you with any trpuble that could be ailing you. Most media portays her as some evil witch that thrives off of misfortune and suffering, but she was just... neutral. And this weird, yet charming movie has really been the only media that's gotten her right.

I dunno if you've ever played the old MMO Wizard101, but Baba Yaga becomes a pretty major character in the late game. She's super cool! A member of this secret society of scholars that protect the universe from magical threat, and the adoptive mother of the player characters new best friend from that part of the game. She's very much a super protective badass grandma who just happens to have witchy hobbies and aesthetics and it's awesome. She's even an attack spell in game!

Fun fact: this version of Baba Yaga is actually kind of similar to how she was portrayed in a lot of Soviet films and cartoons. She can be grumpy and sometimes do something villainous but in many versions she's also quite sympathetic. For example, in "Domovionok Kuzia" (domovionok means little domovoy - that can be roughly translated as a house goblin) she kidnaps Kuzia from his friend Natasha but she just wants to be happy (and a domovoy can bring good luck in your house). So when she finally meets another domovoy named Kikim, her wishes come true and she stops chasing Kuzia, thus letting him to return to his friend. This is one of the best Soviet cartoons ever made.

@reddragon8167
@reddragon8167 9 жыл бұрын
+David Glenn Baba Yaga is anywhere between good and diabolical, depending on who you ask. There were some constants. She's grouchy, scary, incredibly powerful, hard to find, and generally made the laws of reality whimper, but she won't threaten you if you do as she asks and SHUT. UP. She hates, hates, HATES the curious and questioning. Some versions say that this is because she doesn't age unless someone asks a question to her, which takes an entire year off her life. She has spirit servants wandering her house, but don't bring it up. There have been at least two stories in which Baba Yaga was angry with the hero and he managed to earn her favor by being courageous. The first story had him respond to her questioning by complaining that she's a terrible host for not getting him some food and drink, which she found brave. She gave that one the food and drink he requested. The second one featured the bruised and battered Tsar that she intended to eat because she didn't care for his family's rule. The Tsar responded that he earned those wounds fending off enemy soldiers for the sake of everyone in his kingdom, including her. She decided to let him go for that, but asked him to never come back to her house. So, should you get whisked away into a story and meet her and you don't know how to react, don't beat around the bush, do not ask her questions, be a good little boy, and, if she seems spiteful to you, get upset right back. You'll probably live. Probably. No guarantees.

Baba Yaga in the Russian stories serves as a nuetral character, really. She can be good or evil, it all depends on her motives and demenor. If she feels like helping you, she will. If she feels wicked, you're as good as destined to be her next meal....or something much worse.

The song is from the perspective of the town's folk who really don't favour her and would rather their children not wonder too far in to near where she might be, hence the negative depiction. The rest of the movie is different in portraying her, it portrays her much more accurately.

The actual idea of Babayaga came from a story called Vasilisa about a girl with a magic doll who ran into a witch that lived in a dancing chicken house. xD The witch would tell her to always do her chores or she'd eat her, because the girl was so frail she would get tired and her doll would end up doing her chores. :)

As Russian I think that represation of Baba Yaga in this movie is much better than in modern Russian animated movies about Russian mythology, because if in modern Russian films she's just a villain, here, in Bartok, her personality is much deeper. In general, Baba Yaga was, in Slavic mythology, rather a keeper of wildlife, in the guise of an old woman who did not always stand on the side of evil in Russian fairy tales. Often in fairy tales it is said that she eats children or does other terrible things, but nevertheless this is not observed directly in any fairy tale (as if all her atrocities are just rumors), and if we will remember the fairy tale "The Frog Princess", then on the contrary, she was on the side of the main character Ivan Tsarevich helping him to defeat the god of death Koschei and save his bride Well, thanks to Americans for making such a great movie with Russian athmosphere :D

It's like Hades in Greek mythology, in media he's often portrayed as a villain when he's actually much more and isn't evil in contrast to Disney Hercules or the Clash of the Titans remake movie etc. Also I like Baba Yaga in mythology cuz she could be a supporting character, a neutral one who does a favor for a favor or a downright antagonist... Such as the tale of Koskei the Deathless or the tale with the girl and the matchsticks.
@khantemujin2245
@khantemujin2245 Жыл бұрын
@@finnmchugh99 yep, agree! I think that's because both characters are associated with death and the underworld, but attitude to death was a bit different in antiquity. And neither Hades or Baba Yaga weren't the ones because of whom people die - Hades was a ruler of the underworld and he was responsible for people's souls after death and Baba Yaga was a guide to the underworld or smth like this, like Charon

We, the Russians, put emphasis on the last syllable. It's right to say - baba jagA))) By the way, the word "baba" is a rude name for an elderly woman and a woman as such. «Yaga» is not a first name or a last name. This is her character. The etymology of the word is very complex. According to one version, the word yaga means "anger" or "to be angry"))

@andreyegoroviphone8455
@andreyegoroviphone8455 Жыл бұрын
@@avosmash2121 Well, in general, I think so. She is truly evil and harmful, but in some other fairy tales she is the main character. An ambiguous character from a fairy tale. The word “yaga” was discovered and used in Rus' several centuries ago. Now this word is not used at all in ordinary conversation between people in Russia. Only for this fairy-tale character. Baba Yaga is the name of a character that has come to be understood, and we do not translate it into modern language as his common noun.

@NaiTaiDai Yep. She was really crafty, and in most cases if she helped you, it really helped her more than you, as we see in the movie. They sort of got her house correct, with it being on chicken legs and kneeling for her. However, I was a bit miffed for not seeing the fence of bones that surrounded the house, with the lit-up skulls mounted on each fence post. She also owned a cat and a bird that she mistreated very badly, so they would often help someone escape her clutches.
