Agreed 100%. he's got a powerful high-tech army, absolutely loaded with treasures, he's strong and well-built (unlike some successful tyrants who allow themselves to get fat and weak) and has already constructed a massive, defensible castle that's well-stocked with provisions and all the bells, whistles, and toys a monarch could dream of. idk why he didn't visit some other countries to collect himself up a Castle Court. A Queen to birth him an Heir, some stacked women for a Harem, a Jester, a Steward, some ruffians to go on hunts/tournaments with, maybe a couple of Thanes/court royals/province administrators. all the "low class" jobs such as cooks and maids are taken up by his mechs, so he only has to find a few bootlickers and social climbers to mooch off his immense wealth and shower him in praise (he could probably also befriend some other warlords and they could conquer additional territory together.)

typically well-educated people are able to conquer those who aren't well-learned/versed in knowledge. He likely used his knowledge of culture, history, math/logistics, and science/engineering to build his fortress and armored mechanical soldiers/horse to impose dominance on the impoverished, uneducated Cussacks living in the area. once he established his military supremacy over them, he crowned himself the local despot, consolidated his rule, and taxed them or demanded their various goods and treasures, which is how he amassed such a wealth of food, supplies, and money in the original movie. this is more or less how a lot of Middle eastern, Latin America, and African history played out in real life; someone obtained some kind of huge advantage that the locals couldn't compete with, and eventually overtook them in servitude.

Not the best villain song in the long series of Rankin-Bass produced stop-motion films but Kubla Kraus from JACK FROST (1979) is probably one of my favorite Christmas villains: a warrior tyrant so hated and anti-social that he single-handily built a mechanical army to serve him. The JACK FROST special itself isn't all that great, above average at best, but, concept wise, Kubla Kraus and his old-world robots are nifty antagonists.

It would’ve been a lot better if it had developed more on the relationship between Jack and Elisa, and less time with Pardon-Me-Pete
@hobomike69352 жыл бұрын
Pardon-Me-Pete absolutely tanked the movie. they invested way too much time and character building on a character who's simply acting as a framing device for the story, and only _LOOSELY_ ties Jack Frost to the _Groundhog Day_ holiday (February 2nd) just so Rankin Bass can claim it's a holiday special. (Jack himself is not really related to Groundhog day, and is more of a Winter character out of legend; but they probably figured they already had way too many christmas specials and needed to branch out to other holidays.) The story itself is depressing; Jack effectively gives up his friends, his powers, AND his immortality to be with this peasant girl, and then gets cucked because some handsome knight dude with a big chest and a ride shows up and pulls a few slick moves that win her over. Jack even indirectly kills a man and steals all his stuff over her, but lost in the end.

As a kid I didnt know what a shogun was when he talked about the Samurai. Then when it became popular here in America then i found out. Lol
@hobomike69352 жыл бұрын
this came out in late 1979, people well-knew what all those things were as Japanese culture was catching on by the 60s. Star Wars (1977) came out 2 years before this movie, and was hugely popular; it became quickly apparent that George Lucas had based the Jedi Knights' lightsaber skills off of various Samurai fighting styles and mannerisms, such as honor and respect to your "master" or sensei. Speed Racer was popular in america as early as 1967 and introduced anime to U.S. teenagers.

World War II nudged a lot of Japanese things into American mainstream consciousness. Kamikaze, seppuku, bushido, etc my grandmother would casually say stuff like if explaining how we'll have to get to the airport early the next day, "...and then after breakfast we're gonna have to Bansai it out of here to make it in time." Rankin Bass was confident enough to include it as a lyric in a show aimed primarily at children, so it's wasn't a complete mystery what a samurai was.

Now that you mention it... But interestingly, Burgermeister gleefully (well, as gleeful as a miser like him could get) sang his tune and made clear his malevolent intent. This one just sounds kinda bitter and sad.
