This literally sounds like it could be a movie soundtrack! Amazing playing, by the way. Wonderful job.

I seem to recall this concerto was found beside Bartok's deathbed. All I can do is listen, marvel, and be grateful. I love the sincerity and politeness of some of the lesser-known orchestras. This is a wonderful, transparent read. Nobody beats Bartok for song, although he's a tough customer for me and I've been listening fifty years. Kudos and thanks Anibal Dos Santos.

Absolutely fantastic! My fiancee has been working on this piece for years and I know how difficult, borderline-unplayable it is. Tron, you're pretty much right. The piece was scrawled out on basically scraps of paper, left to Tibor Serly to compile into a coherent piece. It's my all-time favourite viola piece. Wonderful job, Mr. Santos.

Hermosos sonidos.

Y Gracias...

It's not accurate to call this Bartok's Viola Concerto when the composer died before finishing it. He left 13 un numbered pages of short score draft with very few indications of the intended orchestration. And there are several passages in the Finale that only have the melodic line sketched without any harmony. This performance uses the excellent version by Tibor Serly who was a friend and colleague of Bartok.

At least this young man know how to hold and play his viola. Not wandering all over the place, held upright. I'd like to see him play Mozart's Symphony Concertante K 364 for Violin and Viola. Problem is that I just don't care for Bartok.

Listen to his string quartets, one of them will change your mind perhaps. I think it is number 4, or #5.

I'm sorry. I have played the viola for 8 years, and I want to like this song. I just find it boring. It has no hook. Maybe it's just because my brain refuses to enjoy anything by Bartók.

First, watch a more convincing recording, maybe Tabea Zimmerman with the Berlin Phil. It is actually a very romantic piece if you delve into it enough. I would recommend reading Maurice Riley's book on this piece. It's called Bartok's Swansong. It is very insightful to what was going on at this time in his life. Also, you should play it. It hooks you more when you play it. And if you have ever heard of Arnold Bax, look up his Phantasy for Viola and Orchestra. So beautiful.
