I`ll list a few mistakes we have at work. 3 lorry loads of crankshafts go to France with the wrong number on them. All had to come back and be re stamped. 200 huge CAT crankshafts with the hole drilled the wrong way round on the ends. All scrapped. This month we have had a £250,000 fine for out of tolerance parts going to a mine in Australia.

@@445fhn I`m sure we have to have all that already. It`s one of these really old companies where everyone used to take their time. Now it`s all rush rush and things go wrong. I run 3 CNC millers now when I used to run one.

an estimate isnt legally binding, whereas a quote is i believe. However sometimes a business decision overides all that legal stuff and is the best, worst option

+1 You don't want to get a reputation for bumping up the price after stripping an engines, at least not without good cause.
@robertfrye5161Ай бұрын
I have seen all kinds of problems when I worked for an engine builder in the 1970's. The man I worked for checked everything and on occasion he would make a mistake. He owned it and fixed it. He sent a lot of pieces out to a shop like yours for the heavy machining, but when it came back it had to be right. You run a quality business.

Haste makes waste. I've done it myself. Ran through a quote too quickly and missed something important. Either wound up eating it, or it was very embarrassing to have to admit my error to a customer who ended up not trusting me, and I could not blame the person. Where is can burn you is if they get another similar estimate they will wonder why it costs more, or if they pass on information about the deal they got on the work to someone else who comes to you for a quote and the new potential customer wonders why they're not getting the great deal too. Explain it to them and they won't believe you.
@robertburrows6612Ай бұрын
Simple put on you you emails when you price a job. This is an estimate, the final price may different, it could cost you more . Im a self employed sparky , I'm not a charity. I rarely doma job to a fixed price. I can't see inside walls I can't see underneath floor boards ect. I also tell customers on a fixed price jobs if they add to the job it will cost more and the quote changes to an estimate.
@brianread9781Ай бұрын
It was only ESTIMATED & an estimation is not actual price it’s a rough idea . If you had quoted X amount that would’ve been different. From a legal standpoint you’ve done no wrong,part prices & machining prices vary.

An estimate is exactly what it says......an estimate, not a quote an estimate!!

That why you price out each bit of the job even if you give the customer a discount for doing it all with you - in case you miss a bit
@ataxpayer723Ай бұрын
"That why you price out each bit of the job even if you give the customer a discount for doing it all" You can also quote the entire job, then add a % for your time in preparing the quote, then add 10% for a prompt payment ( add 10%, but offer 5% discount if the invoice is paid within 24 hours )
