Early 80's Ford Escort 1.6. The ones that had head gasket issues and were interference engines. Rebuilt several of them. Had one the oil pressure would drop when turning hard at low speed. Only one direction. The hydraulic lash adjusters would start clicking very slightly/randomly. Checked with manual gauge. Pressure was in fact changing. Drop pan, changed pick-up & oil pump. No joy. After some thought about oil flow in that engine...looked at camshaft. Oil was pumped into the hollow cam then out to lash adjusters. The distributor end was supposed to have a plug threaded into it. Popped distributor out to find the new cam didn't have the plug installed. Pulled a plug out of old cam and installed it. FIXED! The oil pan didn't have much of a baffle and with the excess "leakage" at the distributor end, the pick-up was uncovering when you turned. I'd done a bunch and never run into it before.

You don't say what the valve is that you replaced on the Golf. If (and I do mean if, because I don't have any significant VW experience) it's a bypass valve to allow the oil to bypass the filter if the filter gets blocked I can't see that solving the idle oil pressure. I do have experience of sock type air filters and all they have ever achieved on my engines is a power loss and ruined driveability - that's on DCOEs or DHLAs. A full airbox type filter is vastly better.

Have you tried a Colourtune tester on the carbies with and without the socks? We use the tester on aircraft engines as it shows immediately if you are rich or lean at any point of the throttle position. With the mirror and accessories that come with the glass spark plug it has solved countless problems we have had over the years by giving real time results. Gunson makes them still I believe. We use them on fuel injection too!

I went to the local agent for advice on what to look for, and was told theres not really anything. The only thing i was advised was motor factor branded spares are at least as good quality as original equipment, BUT, only use OE Lada oil filters. It was then explained to me there was a rubber flap in the filter that stopped back flow at an idle and it stopped you running a bearing. I used many different manufacturers parts, but kept a stock of three or four Lada oil filters. The thing ran well, and hard as me and my mates tried we couldnt kill it.
