Magnificent piece of work..thank goodness it was filmed a d preserved for all young dancers to see, and for us oldies to reminese over..Misha was truly a revelation when he came to the West..I saw him dance at Covent Garden unforgettable..

OMG, I am in love with Mikhail Baryshnikov! I cannot stop watching him. 😍

Twyla's masterpiece and one of the greatest roles he danced..the finest male dancer anywhere anytime.
@wildsarsaparilla3 жыл бұрын
Twyla's masterpiece is arguable. I've always been partial to Deuce Coupe myself, but yeah, Baryshnikov is the finest male dancer and after he defected and hooked up with Tharp, I can only guess God's hand was involved.

Elaine Kudo is so talented. She holds her own with Baryshnikov and Jaffe. She has her own distinct mystique.

I had the pleasure of seeing this danced live at the San Francisco Opera house in March (?) of '76 when the ABT did their usual residency there. I'm not exactly sure of the date, but the moment Baryshnikov stepped into the spotlight is indelible in my memory - as is the single gasp of two thousand plus people. (This was his super-anticipated first ever performance in SF .) There was something in his arms and legs and body that many of us had never seen in a performer before - an electricity and surety and lightness along with absolute there-ness. Hard to describe! This video captures some of that. The audience went insane during and after his first solo. This also makes me strangely nostalgic for the relatively simple days of the Cold War!

I fully agree with what you say..He had a quality that incorporated his extreme talent and is hard to describe. i am so glad that I too, got the chance to see him dance. we have some wonderful young dancers nowadays some with great talent, but nobody has come close to MB...he really was special. when his movie "Turning Point" was at the cinema..the audience I was in were applauding when he danced - kind of strange but that was "him" !!

@kitleonard, I have also nostalgic moments when I think that the world was a lot simpler and easier to understand during the 1970s and 1980s when I was growing into a young adult. But I get over these moments fairly quickly. Back then we didn't even know that we barely escaped a full blown atomic war more than once! And the fashion of the 1980s was horrible 😊

I saw this in Los Angeles in 1976. Opening night. Baryshnikov dropped the hat. The audience gasped and he recovered so well and in character, that the dance went on. I saw it again the next night and he didn’t drop the hat.

Perhaps it's Twyla's masterpiece, but she clearly owes a lot to Fosse & Version. That doesn't detract, but acknowledges.

Val E ...how very fortunate you were. !! I saw him dance at Covent Garden at a gala evening for H M Queen Mother's birthday..altho not that evening I should say..such was the interest in him that he agreed to do one more performance the following night. myself and a friend sat outside the Royal Opera House all night waitkng for the box office to open the following day..the performance was wonderfu.He danced with Lesley Collier..later we were blessed to get his auto-graph and pictures. People had arrived from all partz of the UK and Europe to get tickets!! i don't believe if was ever filmed but the Royal ballet had it in their repetoire at one time. the piece was called Rhapsody ....you may know of it of course ! such good memories!
