I am a white belt and now I'm at basai dai..I've known all katas up to hein godan..now I'm learning basai dai.

The technique level is superb. However, most of these applications involve having a dead or inactive hand and are based off of an incoming karate punch or series of karate type attacks. I thought kata was designed to be used against unskilled civilian attackers. Also that there was never a dead or inactive hand in karate.

Kata is a way of active meditation with no limits of perfecting it. Take the best out of it and use for your needs

This is just one of many "interpretation " of bassai (passai) kata. There are no limitations for bunkai as you know my friend.

They demonstrate only the easier and clearer parts of the kata, but avoid the ones that we should have questions about.

I rather liked that. Some interesting moves - I'm a jitsuka not a karateka - so I appreciate the movements and their applications. Thank you.

Funny that in the first move you block jumping forward while in the application he retreats. Just get rid of the kata!

***** haha, easy Karate tiger. I know that using your head is not allowed in your style, but try, it will be a thrilling experience for you.

I meant using your head in another way... but you're right about the one you meant :)

Moving forward in a kata means attacking. The first move is some kind of attack. Maybe a throw.

Talking about things like crane blocks and other wrist blocks. Hands are not limbs...This is part of the lore. I wasn't there. Couldn't tell you for sure.

If you want a good interpretation of kata bunkai watch Ian Abernathy. They are only doing bunkai by mimicking movement instead of exploring. Remember one reason behind kata was for a way to record a fighting style so there is alot more than meets the eye. A block sometimes could be a throw or takedown etc.

My dojo only has 12 bunkai for this kata. I'm trying to figure out which one is added here. Big part of our black belt test.

You can try it with some throwing techniques. It would be fun 😊

this is one interpretation of the kata. But I would say that it is less effective in this day and age and should be updated/modified. I would hate to think that this is still being taught

its kihon bunkai, still very godo and clean techniques :) ♥

Sometimes karateka had their hands cut off by Samurai. Some of the wrist blocks and "dead hands" reflect this.
