Base Coat vs Flow Extender - They are the same right?

A lot of things about the base coat and the flow extender are the same. We want to keep as much of our composition as possible without losing it to tilting, both of the edge and rolling over itself. Both a flow extender and a base coat help this.
They are not identical in their behavior either. The more paint you have the more like each other they become. My easy answer to most people is the base coat allows you stretch from the outside in and a flow extender allows you to stretch from the inside out.
The paint with flow extender is actually on top of the painting surface with no other wet paint underneath. That anchors the paint there and lets you stretch outward. While the base coat has wet paint underneath and your main composition will slide in whatever direct you are going. Once paint drops of the edge or stays on the outside as you move around that paint gets more quickly pulled from outside in.
In this video I try to demonstrate why the base coat and flow extender are different.

It was fine, I didn’t even notice it! I actually like when it’s the longer repetitive parts if you keep talking through them & not do the music & speed through, but that’s cause I tend to multitask while watching so I don’t have to look at the screen every second, and I still follow along by your words if I’m not looking

I have gone mentally sideways trying and ALWAYS miserably failing at any attempts I’ve made. Realizing that all pours, recipes and consistency’s are not interchangeable I came across you. You very simply put things in basic terms, side by sides, and simplicity of instructions to help us out. The prettiest of paints, pigments, and supplies mean nothing when they all end up at the bottom of a garbage bag! You are my go to channel when I see a pretty and shiny picture to get YOUR instruction how it was done start to finish! You are the “Alton Brown” of the painting world in my eyes!

Great video! Fun fact in regards to the yellow/black = green. Black paints (especially oils) have blue in them. Hence that yellow mixing with the black will draw from the blue and force green. Same reason why some pours might be dominated black and white but suddenly shades of light blue will appear (makes things tough for monochromatic pours) 😎

What’s funny when I watch these vids, is that I always pick up on & learn something I needed that is not even anything of what you’re trying to teach us/experiment 😂 Watching you tilt those to the corners and back to center just clicked for me why my pours and how the paint is moving isn’t turning out how I want . I was trying to tilt it on the sides of the painting , so it goes toward the whole side, instead of just right to the corners. Cant wait to try it again a little more like in this video

Hello David, As always - thanks a lot for your great explanations. One more question on this subject: I saw artists pouring colors on top of a middle base coat , smearing the colors with a palate knife, and then adding more base coat around. Wouldn't it be better to put a base coat on the whole canvas from the beginning?
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist Жыл бұрын
Depends on how you want your base coat to interact with the paint. If the paint is underneath the pour you get a different effect than if you put the paint on the outside and move it with none underneath.

The "pros" DO NOT put out TUTORIAL videos. They post "WATCH ME PAINT" videos. There's a HUGE difference in the two. I've LEARNED more from YOU than I have from all the "super experienced" painters videos... COMBINED! And Trust me....that's a COLOSSAL number! Guys....Next time you're watching a video & think "IM GONNA DO THAT!" AND BEFORE YOU HEAD TO THE STORE TO SPEND MONEY.....PLEASE ask yourself...."Did they REALLY teach me HOW TO create that OR did I just watch someone create beautiful art without truly understanding HOW they did it? Food for thought....bc a LOT of them say...."Ohhh...no worries...it's just paint!" Well, to MY wallet it's NOT "just paint" nor "just floetrol" nor just "Pouring medium," etc... Its not "just paint" til you're actually selling art & replacing supplies or getting sponsors freebies. If you're like me....you gotta do what you can to practice on the CHEAP!! Godspeed!❣

@@LeftBrainedArtist My daughter is Ava. Pronounced "A-va" not "Ah-va." She became "A-vah-cado" & naturally I'm "Mamacado." Shes 20 & her friends still call me that. The whole formal "Ms" or "Mrs" just doesn't fit me.🤣 Thanks again for so many excellent vids. I've kinda fallen into your rabbit hole tbh. 😁🤘🖤

Hey leftbrain, big fan here. I've been pouring for almost two years now and have an absolute arsenal of these things in my apartment - I was curious, how do you store your finished pieces? I get so scared of leaving them canvas-to-canvas because I've had them stick and tear on me before Thanks!
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 2 жыл бұрын
1) make sure they get a proper varnish. 2) lay them horizontally so the weight of the paintings never pushes up against each other 3) put a barrier like a felt, or parchment paper, or string in between each one. ** I have to admit in my videos I have a bunch of paintings stacked horizontally behind me. I only do this after varnishing and only front to front and back to back. I've only had one pair stick. I need to build me a better way to stack them upright too..

Hello David, thank you for another informative video. I have started my acrylic pour journey with your videos to set me up and guide me along the way. I am, however, having trouble with the consistency of my base coat for the pours. It is either too thin and the paint runs all over the place or too thick and the paint sits like a stubborn dog which doesn’t want to move. I live in Namibia so, as we cannot get the same products you use there, I use glue and water as my pouring medium based on your recipe. However it is the problem of how much water to add to get it to the correct consistency. Please can you give me some advice to rectify this problem. Many thanks and thank you again for all your help. Best regards, Margot 🙏🏻

Your base coat should be the exact same consistency as your other paint for most techniques. Do you use the drizzle method to check consistency then do a drip method on a piece of paper? Those two tests will get you where you should be I believe - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jn3LqIF9ebaiY7c

@@LeftBrainedArtist Thank you David. I use the drizzle method but do not follow up with the drip on a piece of paper. I shall try that in the future. 👍🏻🌻

Question: Are the base paint and the flow extender the same ratio, paint to pouring medium?

Can you explain what these two products are? Flow extender?
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 2 жыл бұрын
They aren't products. Just ways to put paint on the canvas. I am using the exact same paint mixture as the rest for the black, I am just painting the whole canvas before pouring or adding a flood of black around the paint after I pour it.

So what exactly is flow extender?
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist Жыл бұрын
Paint rolls over itself on the edges when it hits a dry surface like canvas. Kind of like a wave peaking so the top stuff goes under the flow and now top stuff comes. A flow extender is exess pain that you don't mind gets rolled over on the outside of your paint so you aren't loosing your composition as much due to that effect.
