The acrylic pour base coat has many different uses. In this video we explore how using a base coat for acrylic pouring can alter the look of a straight pour or treering pour and allow you to keep more of your inital pour design without tilting as much off the canvas.

White, unless I'm using analogous colors - then I use a complimentary color that falls in the middle so when the paint rolls over the top the base pops through

Yeah, some of the base coat does end up making its way to the surface (or just below the surface) adding to the depth of the painting. That doesn't always happen depending on the relative weight of the paint but in this case it definitely did.

I'm new to pouring and your videos answer so many of my questions. Please keep posting your educational videos. They are gems. I understand a lot more about base coats after watching your tutorial. Now I wonder how much paint should be on a base coat. I know that different pours require different base coat thickness but its kind of guessing how much paint to put on the canvas- not as much for swipes vs more for flip cups etc.
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 3 жыл бұрын
About 30% of your total paint should go to the base. That's what I have found at least. You are right though Linda. Every technique will be different.

Using an "edge catcher" would also save the edge colors since you could "ricochet" the paint back on the canvas.(See Expressionist's Art Studio)

True Orla. I haven't found a way to do that where I can keep a more symmetrical interior. The ricochet (which is an awesome thing to call it by the way) always makes it look a bit awkward to me.

Another good experiment. I really like a base coat, that's just me. I have started writing all this info down in a notebook. You have helped me learn so much:) Thank you, I like black or blue in a base coat

I need to do some more solid color base coats. Maybe use transparent colors on top and an opaque base and see what colors show through.

This video popped up as a thumbnail after Fiona's most recent video today. I wish I'd seen it before I painted today. I'd experimented, it didn't work, I learned... It's okay - I'll do differently tomorrow. I have no idea how I missed this video. I thought I'd seen your whole catalog! As always, my thanks.

Learning by doing is definitely the best. Now you can take what you learned yourself from what I try to point out in the video and make an even better painting next time Rebekah.

yes, base coat is the main foundation for HOW your pigments can move around also on the canvas if doing pours. One hack to try and keep edges from rolling off is to hold a corner bent cardboard at the corner when tilting so you can contain it also as much as possible. is how i do it sometimes. good video. thanks for sharing.

Another great lesson for us beginners! I like how you add the extra paint to the corners after you pour. I am assuming that you do this because the corners are hard to get to when stretching. Best regards, Nancy

Thank you do much for not only telling that things happen, but why things happen, that helps so much. I just want to add. If you forgot your base coat or change your mind that you do want to keep your edges even if you did not put a base down you can put a ring of paint around afterwards . Now I did not compare yet if that works the same or just similarly but it definitely also helps to keep your design and just like the base coat this additional paint is just being “swallowed" as the paint with your design flows over it.
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 3 жыл бұрын
It does work mostly the same. You get a little more stretching in the middle but you can definitely keep the paint on the canvas better that way.

Great explanation! No one has ever explained that, at least not in a way that I understood. Is it better to have a puddle to push than a basecoat
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you are trying to do. Conserve a lot of your painting, base coat. Conserve half of your center paint, puddle. If you are doing pear cells or others things it is a little different.

It’s been said before but let me say it again: your videos are so practical and helpful! Thanks so much for taking the time and energy to share what you’ve learned! I was drawn to this video because I have a lot of trouble with covering my canvas, even with a base coat. It seems to always be areas that end up not getting covered with paint, especially on the side as the paints simply doesn’t want to come off the edge. I’m guessing it might have to do with my paint being too thin. I do hope that I’ll master this bit soon as at the moment I have to spend several minutes at the end trying to touch up and cover the edges which is not fun.
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Marie. It is a common problem. Too thin so it runs off too fast is one issue. You can also try using a piece of cardboard on the corners as you tilt so not as much falls off.
@mariemadeleinelarouche9134
@mariemadeleinelarouche9134 3 жыл бұрын
I notice in the video you don’t actually cover all of the edges with the base coat first, just do a puddle. I wonder how come the green base coat doesn’t stick to the canvas like the paint on the one that doesn’t have a base coat?
