Yeah! It's one thing for people who can't draw to help them gain muscle memory or study how clothing works on bodies. But it's a different ball game when self proclaimed professionals do that! What's the point? You're paying for their style. If they're giving me base art, I might as well do it myself.

mmmm..... for anathomy is way better idea to learn from real images and anylise them with simple shapes. the reason is that if you learn from a stylised drawing you are learning from someone interpretation of reality and you will be stuck with that interpretation or style, but if you learn from reality you will know how it works any style and your own style will have a good base. i know that learn from realistic images it can be less exciting, but in the end it is the best way to improve your skill
@sillycheese301
@sillycheese301 4 жыл бұрын
If you're using them for learning anatomy they're not. Most of the bases use stylised anatomy. And you need to understand the structure of the body to be able to draw it well and in different positions. You're not getting that if you're tracing or drawing over bases. If you can look at a skeleton and simplify it into shapes first then practice the proportions that would be better then you can later stylize it once you're comfortable.

@MARVELOUS FANG I like anatomy models, but not the wooden ones. They don't move like people do and the poses you can make with them are very limited. There are lots of great plastic alternatives that look more like real people and that can do very dynamic poses.
@iclaimthisname9767
@iclaimthisname9767 4 жыл бұрын
@MARVELOUS FANG There are a lot of fake ones that break easily but the 'real' ones (also more expensive unfortunately haha) don't break as quickly. Something might fall off once if you're making a weird pose, but it doesn't happen super often and you can put everything back like it's supposed to

As for bases, I agree. I never really used them actively outside of once or twice for those dA "Base collabs", but I think that if people like them that they're a perfectly fine way to get a start in art. The only thing I don't like about base makers and users is when they don't credit the original artists. But other than that, it's a good thing that it's becoming easier to kids to get into art. Hopefully, they'll actually enjoy it and go further with it... Unlike me, who never put my whole heart into it, since I didn't actually enjoy doing it, and only kept forcing myself to do it because it was the only thing people knew me for. If only I had realized that sooner. Oh damn, sorry for the rambling. Also, that's a very good drawing. No wonder it took 8 hours to make.

Eek! I completely agree! Back when I was a wee little lass I used to draw on Anime, MLP and Powerpuff Girls bases on my cousins' laptop and eventually tried to draw my own. Of course, me being a wee little lass I couldn't do much and the lines came out wonky because mouses are hard to use, but I eventually got a grip of it. I downloaded an MS Paint-ish program on my Mac as well, where I just tried to draw on my own without bases, though I occasionally used them. Eventually though, I dropped digital art for a while and stuck to trad art. It took me getting a phone and a new laptop that wasn't mac to get back into digital art lol, and now I got a tablet for Christmas! Though I still need to practice anatomy and all that jazz, but I'll get there. Tbh I still use bases occasionally, but I moreso use them as mannequins. I think some bases r rlly good for mannequins so that I can make clothes for my ocs, which i then draw on Ibis or Medibang lol. It's fun! But yeah, I find it kinda upsetting when ppl talk about young artists in horrible manners for using bases. It can discourage them and I honestly hate that bc they could become great artists in the future! People are mean sometimes. Bases are great for learning basic stuff before moving to anatomy... Another way I used to use bases was practicing anatomy lol. It was short lived, but basic skeletons were fun to draw! idk i kind of rambled on. great vid, pretty art, i am love.

It isn't. Using bases and tracing is just cheating. Why wouldn't you want to make your OWN art that you can be proud of and worked hard on instead of copying off of others? Make no sense.
@alexlion8458
@alexlion8458 4 жыл бұрын
@@thestrivinghero9536 Cheating? No. If you aren't claiming the art as your own it isn't, especiallyif you're just learning. It helped me learn things that help me in my art today. It definitely isn't for everyone but for some young and new artists, tracing and bases ARE how they learn how to draw. I know several people who aren't artists(people who do not draw often, everyone can make art, but not everyone is an artist) who use bases as a way to visually make a character for a story or role play and more. So no...this is not cheating, but it isn't for everyone and not everyone learns this way. It is one of many ways that people learn.

@@alexlion8458 Lol whatever you tell yourself to help you sleep at night. I still consider it the lowest way to make art, and an incredibly lazy one at that. I'd be so pissed if someone traced my art and then tried to say they were just "learning" or some shit. It's tracing. That's all it is. It's not even your art. You have no right without the artists permission, which fyi, most of the bases are from shows or artists that never gave people permission to make in the first place.
@reader398
@reader398 4 жыл бұрын
@@thestrivinghero9536 oh get over yourself, what's a show going to do about some beginner artist doing a screenshot redraw? Nothing, they dont care. And as long as one credits the artist or even better, gets permission, its totally fine. It's not lazy. Plus it's just a base, which has the explicit purpose of being used. Tracing isnt bad. Trying to pass it off as your own is. And tracing is learning, whether you like it or not. Not everyone is trying to become a proffesional artist, let kids have fun in any way they want, whether it's by using bases or drawing free hand

Hm. I think I used bases maybe once or twice? I never really got good at using them the way they're intended; rather, I turned to using them as pose references instead. It just felt more natural for me to be the one to draw the whole thing out, and it's been helping with my anatomy along the way. Also, when you said Naruto edits, I felt my inner 12yr old scream a little. I did my share of them (mostly to turn Sasuke blonde for some reason), and doing those edits are what helped me learn the ins and outs of MS paint. I.e, If I had my edit with no BG in one tab, I could copy it and paste it into a new tab with the original image and BOOM- edit with full BG. Of course that only works if the transparency behaves, which is 50/50 because Microsoft. And YES, the eraser thing for the red lines. Its red primary, white secondary, and right click to erase (For Win. 7 version).

this got recommended to me and i was like "oh no" but i gave it a watch anyway and i'm really glad i did. i initially started digital art with a tablet and actually switched to bases for a period of about 3 years. my pixel art got pretty fucking good (i got a daily deviation using a bunnystick base back when the digital doll category had a moderator and lost my marbles lmao) and my anatomy actually improved drastically because i would typically always redo the base. i had started out pretty much exclusively using and making traced anime bases but later switched to making my own or using original bases. i do feel bad about the traced bases that i made and some of them still live on even though i deleted my first base account (rip royaled-pixels lmao) but i don't regret having used them. i learned a lot about art through them and i don't think they held me back at all because i never used them as a crutch. they also helped me unlearn the idea that using references makes you a "fake artist" and that was definitely an important thing to learn. thank you for making this video and for being so positive about a topic that usually gets a lot of hate. also, your art is lovely!!

my opinion on bases: I think you can use them and young artists should for these reasons: bases can help you with anatomy. You can train your anatomy and get used to it by tracing over the base. another thing. If you're using a base for practicing your shading, or colouring, or experimenting with new art. It can be useful because you don't have to go through all the trouble of making the figure even if the figure is not the main focus. So I think that using bases is OK, the problem for me comes in when someone does not give credit

I didn’t start out tracing (at least not that much lol) or using bases or anything, but even I don’t crap on people that did/are starting that way. In fact, bases are a perfect place for people to realize they have an interest in art, and claiming they’re “bad” will just discourage people from starting.

You just healed a part of me. For years I've felt ashamed of how I used bases and tracing when I was a kid/early teenager. I was one of those kids posting the really chunky hair and clothes with no shading or detail. After I quit, I never went on to drawing on my own or anything. I stopped altogether out of shame because I wasn't a "real" artist. It's an understatement to say I didn't have a good home life either, and with my family treating anything expressive I did as cringy/bad already, when the internet made fun of my attempts too, I thought "well shit, I guess I suck and should just stop then." But your kindness and wisdom have really inspired me to try again, 10 freaking years later. Thank you.

As somebody who’s made fairly popular bases in the past, the begin was perfectly nice. Seeing my work be used by so many people made me really happy but I didn’t expect so many people to ignore the rules and take advantage of it. Finding uncredited uses of my bases became daily, and spread to places outside of the original site where it would be harder to recognize it as mine. Eventually it ruined my name in my eyes, so it threw me off the platform permanently. After your name is tried to something, it feels like I can never just go back to doing what I love because of it.

I'm 16, I use bases every once in a while. I always credit the artist like 3 times, say that I didn't make the lines, showing and linking back to the original base. I also edit the base a lot, changing the proportions, hands, arms, legs, expression. I also don't use bases that are traced, only the ones people made themselves. I also create bases for people to use! (Not traced from other artists' work, I make them fully myself)

I never used bases getting into art, but I took reference from them. When I was young, I used to look up bases on google, then think "how can I draw like that?" I would take different aspects, and try my best to get to where I wanted to be. Eventually I moved on to actually just referencing drawings instead of bases, because they were higher in quality and more unique. I did these all on paper, and it really, really boosted my art skills. Idk if this can help anyone, but I hope it does. Also, to any new artists who might read this; You can ALWAYS do better than what you think. You're more capable than you think you are. And don't be ashamed to use bases if you need to!! They're not a bad thing. 😊 Happy drawing, friends.

After studying realistic figure drawing for a while, I decided that it's actually incredibly practical to use anime bases for pose references when you're doing stylized drawings. I don't have tools for digital art or tracing, but if I did I'd definitely use bases to study figure drawing/anatomy more. Those kids drawing over bases or tracing are getting familiar with a lot of basic skills that'll help them down the line.

I started art by doing pose breakdowns on Disney screenshots and official images and then building on from there (thank Ethan Becker for teaching that technique on his "Fixing Avatar Art" vid). I still do traditional art (and it's just been 6 months since I started) and I've seen a lot of improvement with poses, esp feet. I can't bring myself to trace anything (even bases) but the pose breakdown + grid thing and then replicating that is a good way to develop muscle memory (I'm 19, so I don't think 11 is too "old" to start drawing hehe.)

I actually heavily used bases when I was around 10-14 and I think it's a really good resource for people learning + at least at the time it provided another avenue for people to get into art. I predominately used them to make graphics for characters I role played as on a Harry Potter forum. Before that I hadn't had any real interest in getting into digital art but I really, really got into it and eventually transitioned into making non-base digital art.

Even though years later, I got really bored on tracing/base drawing because I ran out ideas of creating my own original characters. So I eventually gave up and realized it’s art thieving. This is advise for beginners, or who wants to try. How to do you own bases fast, use your camera phone, film yourself do the poses you invision your character will have. Grab clear shots from the video. Drag it in your software, break down the pose in simple shapes (yes, by drawing over yourself), I recommend triangles or "lemon slices" BOOM you have your own base that looks natural. You will learn fast this way.

As a adult whom creates animal/anthropomorphic art of my own. I enjoy using doll maker games for human type stuff just for the fun of it. I also draw animal and anthropomorphic bases for those whom can't draw them. I don't use MS Paint but a grogram called MyPaint because the line art is neater. I also include light shading. So I don't see bases as bad thing and am happy knowing that I can help artist get started or just have fun colouring something in that is free to use.

I only use bases/references for pose ideas and treat them like you said: as a sketch. When I was much younger, I used to trace images of video game characters I liked like crazy until I finally found my own way of drawing. Eventually, I got into digital art by using IbisPaintX on my phone, and I've gotten a lot better than when I started using it over a year ago. Much like you said about yourself, I firmly believe I owe much of my improvement to the bases/references I use.

The only base I ever traced was one that another young artist used for a group collab with a bunch of bases that were posing for a picture (and each of us would use our OCs to fill in the bases). It was fun at the time, but even then (nearly 10 years ago), the idea of tracing never really caught my attention. I don't even remember why at this point, but nowadays, I find it so much more fulfilling to use references. You learn more that way, because it forces you to learn, even if it's harder. It trains you to tackle more challenging things that you won't be able to trace. That's just how I approach it.

Not gonna lie, at first I was real bad, but so were my friends who showed them but it would bug me to the point that eventually kept noticing what it was that I was lacking. It's a lot easier in pixel art to notice shading or a lack there of. Not sure if I would have picked up on shading so quickly if not for bases.

But, I don't like how people claim them as their own "art" thank goodness my friend is like me and whenever she uses a base she puts a link for the base she used, her reason is she really wants a reference but doesnt have time to make her own drawing, and I respect that. That's how you use bases people. Reference and practice. 😁

There was a time I used bases, and like you, I wouldn't be where I am today if it where not for them. Later I started getting away from that and started doing this thing that I like to call "mind tracing". I have a reference picture and just draw what I see on a separate paper but not actually tracing the normal way. This helped me look into poses, proportions, styles, and I even picked up on how to draw the thing in the process! One example would be looking at pokemon cards, and drawing the exact picture on a piece of paper. Then I started doing the same thing with pictures, but instead just using them as reference. All of this lead me to improve vastly different art styles, and then slowly finding what I liked best. It all comes down to not giving up. Yes it's frustrating at times to come up with something original. That's ok! If it gets hard, draw some fan art, or take a breather with a loose pencil or pen. You do you. If you draw for you, you will see change. Look at really old art, and draw it like it's not yours. Make it as an inspiration. Then when your done, you will see for yourself that it's possible. To everyone reading this, please keep doing art.

Me coming from a family where we only have just enough money to support the whole family, I never got a phone until last year, and was 13. I started using bases a lot because I do traditional art and since I started posting those traditional art, I am afraid that when I show my digital art, I would be made fun of because of it. So I find simple bases for poses and "warp" the hair and clothing around it to get the lines right, usually the final product may look almost nothing like the original base. I planned to become independent from bases when I turn 15 and currently, I'm happy that I'm just tracing the face shape, the mouth shape and the hands. I love bases, I think of drawings using bases as real art but I'm learning to get my digital art skills up to the same as my traditional art. I try tracing my ttraditional to improve too, so if you're better at drawing on paper, make you own base on paper and use it. It works theoretically and I'm gonna try it when I feel brave enough to leave bases behind completely.

I started out in digital art with bases. I has nothing but a crappy laptop, ms paint, a base, and the trackpad on my laptop to rely on. My family was never super poor, but nor were they super rich. So I couldn’t just walk up to my mom and ask for money for Painttool Sai and a drawing tablet. My art back then wasn’t the greatest, but it slowly made me a bit more confident with digital art. I eventually got to the point where I had my own ipad and I started trying to draw without a base. Again the art didn’t look great, but I’ve definitely grown over the years because of it. Regardless of whether or not I would be where I am without bases, it was how I started and it was all innocent fun.
